Relaxing in nature.
We needed this trip after the past year. We are both essential workers. Our host Ann and Jerry we so friendly and helpful with tips for places to eat. The lake cabin was just perfect for the two of us. The decor was old fashion and charming. The cabin faced the lake and provided fun when we took out the paddle boat. We sat out on the deck and enjoyed the sounds of nature and the reflections on the pond. The beds were out of this world comfortable. We cannot wait to come back and do more fishing and exploring. We did find a few pieces of Fairy Stones when we visited the state park. The local Jane's Cafe had great food. We ate at the Stuart family Restaurant twice.

Perfect getaway spot
A natural setting with a lovely little lake (kayak-plus provided) - We stayed in the 2-bedroom cabin, which was quite comfortable. Mayberry Meadows is about 20 miles from Floyd, a nice drive actually, part along the Blue Ridge Parkway by Mabry Mill, with easy access to area wineries. Our hosts were great. We'd stay again.

Everything we wanted
My family (2 adults and 2 kids ages 9 and 11) enjoyed a long weekend at the lake cabin. It was everything we wanted! The cabin itself was cute, clean, and rustic. All the cooking utensils, etc. we needed were available, even towels to use for the lake. I was concerned that the fridge would be tiny because the description said mini fridge, but it was plenty big - apartment size, not dorm room size. :) I thought the description said there was washer/dryer, but it may have been up at the white house. No big deal, just something to note. We spent most of our time enjoying the lake. It was beyond glorious to have the lake to ourselves. We fished, toured around the lake in the paddle boat, kayak and john boat, and the kids even swam one day when it was warm enough. The only boat we didn't try out was the canoe. Life jackets, floats, etc are all right there by the lake to use. The kids also enjoyed playing ping pong and swinging on the swing, and we all enjoyed the fire pit at night. We had a blast! I wish we could have stayed longer.

About the host

Host profile image
This mountain property has been in our family since 1976. It was an active Bed and Breakfast for 10 years, from about 1984-1994. The owners, Harold and Trudy Spangler, were from Greensboro, N.C., where he worked as a pediatrician for 30 years before they both retired to be a mountain couple, and eventually agreeing to be hosts of a B & B. 5 children and 13 grandchildren have their fondest memories sleeping, playing, and passing a cool summer day and evening on the lawn, hanging from the swings, swimming and boating, board games in the houses, seeing the fall foliage in the autumn, and enjoying getting away from the city. There have been many memorable reunions and intimate weddings on the property. Our motto: unplug and unwind.

Why they chose this property

This property is right on the Blue Ridge Parkway, and leads to Roanoke, Christiansburg, Blacksburg, and many historic sites, including Mabry Mill, Rocky Knob, Floyd, Mt Airy, Galax, Abingdon (Barter Theater), Virginia Creeper Trail(biking), Fancy Gap, and Chateau Morrisette are close by for adventure and special events. New zipline not too far away.
Stuart, and Fairystone Park, are also nearby.

What makes this property unique

Clean mountain air and water. All water from taps comes from underground spring water fed from our pumped, covered wellhouse. Absence of modern distractions, such as the telephone ringing and the chores of home. Time to read and enjoy the beautiful setting; stars brilliant in the night sky, sounds of birds and bullfrogs in the meadow and lake. Very close to major events in the summer and fall at nearby parkway and winery venues. Porches for sitting and rocking, decks for enjoying the lake, meadow and lawn for badminton and crocquet. Unplug from your busy home and work life to this quiet non-technological setting. Our motto is unplug and unwind. However, we have recently added DSL and have weak Wi-Fi on the property. We do not recommend relying on remote learning or telework on this property, but it can be possible, not guaranteed, if you bring your own hotspot.
