About the property

Exquisite Eco-home Provides Vacation for the Senses

Risco Rojo Guest House was designed to be easy on the Earth and Heaven for the body and soul! Let your senses and spirit be delighted...

The zero net energy eco-home sits against the backdrop of one of the Animas Valley's most dramatic red sandstone cliff formations. 360 degree views will dazzle you from dusk to dawn! Artwork from around the world offers a visual feast indoors. There's also superb wildlife viewing opportunities: elk, deer, wild turkey, bear, bobcat, coyote and various raptors frequently make appearances.

Located on 10 acres along pastoral County Road 250, the 2000 square foot modern rustic-styled home offers privacy, seclusion, and a delicious amount of peace and quiet.

Or lack thereof! A continuous fresh air exchange system makes for luxurious comfort and superior indoor air quality. This home is perfect for allergy or chemically sensitive guests, thanks to zero VOC paints, natural finishes, no pets/tobacco/cologne/perfume policies and use of gentle, unscented cleaners.

Great care was taken in selecting quality beds, mattresses, carpets, rugs, linens and towels, etc. - the majority made from natural products and fibers that pamper the body in a way synthetics can’t. An extra plus: I keep Risco Rojo fastidiously maintained and impeccably clean!

I provide coffee, tea, cream, spices, oil, sugar and a variety of other condiments to make it easy and affordable for my guests to enjoy the fully stocked kitchen. An attached greenhouse often has fresh herbs available too!

And if that isn’t enough to tempt you…

Risco Rojo is less than 15 minutes to Durango and only 20 minutes to Purgatory Ski Resort. It’s as an ideal adventure hub, offering immediate access to premier southwest Colorado biking routes (road and mountain), national forests, winter sports and scenic hikes. Trimble Hot Springs and the Dalton Ranch Golf Course are three miles away and Missionary Ridge Road is just a couple miles north. Any guest with artistic tendencies will also find ample inspiration at Risco Rojo with the changing light dancing on the cliffs and across the valley.

The home is a fine example of efficient, sustainable design - powered almost entirely by active and passive solar systems. Experience the incredible comfort this house offers over conventional-built homes. Other technology features include in-floor radiant heating, a heat-recovery ventilation system, induction stove, LED lighting, ultra-efficient appliances and an outlet for electric car charging.

The home is well suited for 4 people (an ideal spot for couples traveling together), but can accommodate 1 or 2 more people with the day bed and trundle in the Reading Room.

The Verde Suite with king bed provides spectacular east, south and west facing views of the Animas Valley. The Terlingua Room has a queen bed and is cozily tucked away on the first floor with views to the east and north. Exquisite granite, natural stone and tile designs adorn both bathrooms.

The house is fully furnished and stocked with linens, towels, cookware, kitchen utensils and a BBQ grill. The outdoor fire pit is perfect for a roaring blaze and making s’mores. There is also Wifi, a TV with DirectTV satellite service (including movie channels), a full stereo system (with outdoor speakers), and a Sonos player in the Verde Suite. Safely store bikes and other gear in the spacious garage.

Guests are welcome to consume marijuana on the premises, but there is no smoking indoors (vaporizers okay).

I love meeting my guests and helping to make their vacation a success! I’m available to assist you with questions about the home technology systems and the area in general. For additional fees, I can stock the refrigerator before your arrival, provide housekeeping, prepare meals for your party during your stay (advance notice required), provide bike shuttles and/or offer other concierge-like services.

My nephew lives in the attached Tree Ghost Studio, (apartment with separate entrance on opposite side of house) and serves as the property caretaker. Please note that we may both need to occasionally access the garage and main house to water indoor plants or perform other maintenance duties. Entry times with estimated lengths of stay are coordinated with guests ahead of time by text to ensure respect of privacy.

Perfect, peaceful, Beautiful

  • 5 of 5

My family and I celebrated my 40th birthday at this wonderful property. First of all, Vicki was a perfect host. She showed us around the house and all of the special features it offered. The beds were perfect and the house was spacious enough for four adults and one teenager and was stocked with EVERYTHING you might need. BUT.....The VIEW....BEAUTIFUL! Waking up every morning to the hummingbirds and the sun rising over the red cliffs was the perfect start to the summer. Thank you again for creating this amazing property!!

Absolutely magnificent!!!

  • 5 of 5

Vicki's home was absolutely PERFECT for our recent two week stay in Durango Colorado!

The home is newer, extremely spacious, comfortable, lovely in and out and fit out to the max!

In all our years of travel, which has been fairly extensive, Vicki was far and away the BEST HOSTESS. Not a detail was missed, including the well stocked kitchen, bathrooms and even the numerous, amazing hummingbird feeders! The 10+/- acres are well kept as are the flower gardens and inviting patio. The mountain views in all directions are awesome! This is a sanctuary in all ways imaginable.

We highly recommend this home to any and all for their stay in Durango! This is a vacation rental not to be missed! We were sad to leave this delightful home.

Rejuvenation of the Soul at Risco Rojo

  • 5 of 5

This property was everything described and more. Not only does Vicki provide everything you need for a fantastic stay, the property itself has an aura of peacefulness and serenity that is unbeatable. The property has fantastic views both inside and out and is in the perfect location just out of town. The home is on 10 acres and we saw a huge buck with his son/grandson just off the patio- it was enchanting. There is a great grocery store at the junction down the street so if you just want to laze around the market is only a few minutes away.

Vicki was a joy to deal with. She responds quickly and clearly loves the area and the home. We will likely return to Durango next year and hope we can again visit Risco Rojo.

Outstanding in every respect

  • 5 of 5

Our (two couples) three night experience at Risco Rojo was terrific. This well-crafted residence is ideally located. Only ten minutes from Durango, yet splendidly situated just beneath the red rock cliffs with a beautiful view across the Animas River valley. There's an abundance of quiet available to enjoy throughout the day and night. Early morning and eventing views from the patio are spectacular with the ever changing light, color and shadows on both sides of the valley. The residence has been lovingly designed, built and furnished and is exceptionally well maintained and fully appointed to support cooking of any kind, including outdoor grilling. The second floor Master Suite is spacious and includes a huge bathroom with soaking tub. There's a second large bedroom with a full bath on the first floor. The details thoughout the house plus dIverse and interesting artwork provides lots of discovery moments during the stay. Finally, the owner is marvelous--very responsive during the inquiry stage and then engaged, thoughtful, fun and helpful during the stay. We could not have been more pleased with the choice of RIsco Rojo for our stay and would (WILL!) both return and recommend it to others.

Just perfect

  • 5 of 5

This is our second summer to spend time at Risco Rojo. Our daughter and teen grand daughter came along this year and shared our delight in this beautiful, perfectly appointed, spotlessly clean home. Vickie is instantly available for any questions and is incredibly gracious and welcoming. My husband goes for fresh air and r&r. I go for painting pleine air, photography and submersing myself in nature and restful quiet. Daughter and g.daughter went for all of that plus any adventures that might present themselves. We love the tucked-away location with easy access to town when desired. We met the girls with our car after their Silverton train trip, and then drove on to Ouray. There are many other local entertainment venues not to be missed. I wouldn't change a thing. It was perfect!

Glorious Views, Beautiful & Comfortable Home

  • 5 of 5

We had the most perfect vacation at Risco Rojo! The views are amazing, the beds are comfortable and the home feels both cozy and roomy. We loved the large soaking tub, watching the humming birds and the fully stocked gourmet kitchen. Every morning we were able to go hiking/running right from the house. Vicki is a wonderful and welcoming hostess.
