This stately 3 bedroom, 2.5 bathroom home is perfectly situated on one of the nicest blocks in Washington DC’s fabulous Capitol Hill neighborhood. It sleeps six very comfortably with a king sized bed and two queen sized beds and sleeps eight with a queen sized aerobed that can be placed anywhere. It includes off-street parking in a private driveway next to the house, an extremely rare feature in this neighborhood.
This luxurious, owner-renovated residence is perfect for both vacation rentals and temporary executive housing. The location is literally steps from the Capitol South metro station, one block from the House of Representatives office buildings and two blocks from the U.S. Capitol. It is a perfect place for a family or an executive, lobbyist or politician who prefers immediate access to the Capitol, the House Office buildings, the Capitol Hill Club, the National Republican Club of Capitol Hill or the Democratic National Committee headquarters. Four current congressmen live on this very same block.
The fully renovated home combines luxurious, high-end finishes with historic architectural features and provides the very best of Capitol Hill and Washington DC right outside the door It is walking distance to the U.S. Capitol, Library of Congress, Supreme Court, the National Mall's monuments, museums and memorials, Metro (orange and blue lines), dozens of restaurants, bars and shops along Pennsylvania Avenue, Union Station, the historic Eastern Market, the Barracks Row district of even more restaurants, bars and shops, the Washington Nationals baseball stadium, many beautiful parks and green spaces and Interstate 395.
The home was built in 1910 and includes original woodwork in beautiful condition, including oak floors throughout the home, baseboards, window trim, door trim and archways.
An iron gate opens from the sidewalk onto a long walkway that leads through a landscaped front yard and up several steps to the front door which opens into an extremely large and sunlight filled living room (approx. 27' by 16') highlighted by a beautiful bay window and with ample space for two separate seating areas. A skylight directly above the original staircase adds even more light to the room.
The dining room (approx. 16' by 11') is accented by a unique vintage light fixture and a classic wood table with period legs and inlay wood border. Leather chairs provide seating for six; however, the table can be extended to allow for dinners of up to 10 seated guests. The dining room can be separated from the living room with two large oak-panel pocket doors. Adding to the beauty of the room is a tin ceiling and a built-in buffet from the early 1900's with wood and leaded glass doors.
A half bathroom with window and custom tile work is located between the dining room and the kitchen.
The gourmet kitchen is perfect for both serious and casual cooking. It features custom built solid wood cabinetry providing extensive storage space, gorgeous green granite countertops, a tin ceiling, undercabinet lighting and two large windows. The stainless steel appliances include a Sub Zero refrigerator and freezer with ice maker, GE Monogram wine refrigerator with storage for 28 bottles, Thermador electric cooktop and wall oven, Bosch dishwasher and Sharp microwave.
A glass door in the kitchen opens onto a large covered porch which steps down into a shady, tree lined, brick oasis of a backyard with amazing outdoor privacy and an outdoor table and chair set.
A fabulous master suite highlights the upper level of the home. It consists of a large bedroom (16' by 16'), marble en suite bathroom and a large closet. The bedroom has four large windows, a king sized bed with top-of-the-line memory foam pillow top mattress and a Casablanca ceiling fan. The master bath includes sparkling Waterworks fixtures, a walk-in shower with frameless glass door and gorgeous marble flooring. The custom closet includes built-in shelving and plenty of hanging space.
The second bedroom (approx. 12' by 10') has a large window and clothes closet and a queen sized bed. The third bedroom (approx. 12' by 12') includes two corner windows, a Casablanca ceiling fan and a lovely Storehouse furniture set including a dresser, armoire and a nearly new queen sized pillowtop mattress.
The hallway bathroom has a restored bathtub and new period-style tile and fixtures. A Bosch washer and dryer are conveniently located in an upstairs closet along with laundry detergent and fabric softener.
I purchased this property to be my primary residence in Washington DC. I lovingly and professionally restored this property to bring out the charm of this gorgeous historic rowhouse while including modern 21st century luxury features. I lived in this exact same apartment for several years until moving out of town recently.
Bill Powers purchased this house in 2002
The location is unbeatable and the block is gorgeous! I wanted something that was quintessentially Capitol Hill, in the heart of this historic neighborhood and on a tree-lined block with other beautiful homes.
Quite simply, the access from this house is too good to be true! I can easily walk to dozens of restaurants, bars and shops as well as many of the nation's finest monuments, museums and memorials. The Capital South Metro station is half a block away and can have me in most other parts of DC within 15-20 minutes or at the airport (DCA) in 30 minutes. When I need to drive, the house is just three blocks from the freeway (I-395).
This property was perfect for our visit. We hosted Thanksgiving dinner for a large family. We had more than enough room for eating and board games. The host is wonderful to work with! The location could not have been better or closer for walking and sightseeing of the capitol and monuments! Would definitely stay here again!!
House was perfect for our family of eight. Living space and dining room accommodated is all with room left over. Kitchen was well stocked for meals in. Walk to metro was easy and short. Host were responsive, extremely accommodating and easy to talk to. This house was perfect spot to base our DC adventures.
We had a fantastic time making memories and seeing the sights of DC. The house is comfortable and is outfitted with all the necessities. The neighborhood offers character while allowing you to live like a local for your stay. The absolute best thing about this property is the access to the driveway/off-street parking, a very rare thing in the city. The second best thing about this property is the proximity to the metro. Once you get the hang of it, the metro is a simple way to get around town. We had three generations of family members and my fathers mobility is quite limited requiring a walker at times. The metro is close enough that he could make it to the capital south station without issue.
THE GOOD
Location is awesome. Very safe neighborhood. The drive way is worth it's weight in GOLD!
The home was nice size and beds were very comfortable. Nice home to be built in the 1880's.
THE BAD
Living room furniture needs to be updated and replaced, it's like sitting in a hole. Decor is not very pleasing seems like someone just hung a bunch of flea market finds (this is all personal preference). Several light bulbs were blown.
THE UGLY
Communication with the property manager is pretty bad. Talked with him the night we arrived then could not get a hold of him for the remainder of the week. Even when the heat did not work could not get in touch with him. The owner tried his best to get the heat fix but with a major repair needed and the fact that the owner was not made aware until the end of the week there was nothing that could be done. The gentleman that lived downstairs was more helpful than anyone. The owner did get some portable heaters to us on the final night (it was 24 degrees in DC) which was very much appreciated and allowed the bedrooms to be somewhat warm during the night. I would say that the biggest problem with this property is the property manager. I am not sure what he is managing but it is definitely not this property. I mean when a resident helps you more than the manager then something is wrong.
SUMMARY
I would stay here again, I just would not attempt to deal with the manager. Other than some downstairs furniture upgrades and of course fixing the heat (which I am sure the owner is addressing), the house was nice and again having the driveway is AWESOME!!!
As the title says, you can’t beat to location of this space. Walking distance to the Capitol. You could probably hit the Cannon House with a three wood. Bull feathers, Tortilla Coast and Subway is roghtbaroung the corner. We hit Tortilla Coast a couple times..great Mexican food.
The home is old and a bit creepy but beds were very comfortable. Art lines the walls and it has A DRIVEWAY!! Very important in DC and rare in that neighborhood.
If you’re bringing you family to DC this is the place to use.
It was very comfortable and a beautiful home. We all loved it. The only thing is it says it sleeps 8 and it can with the help of an air mattress. But there is no private room to put the air mattress in. We were a group of women so the master bedroom was large enough to have the air mattress on the floor there and one person slept on the couch.
You will not find a better Capitol Hill location! The very best of Capitol Hill and Washington DC are located just outside the door! This apartment is literally steps from the Capitol South metro station, one block from the House of Representatives office buildings and two blocks from the U.S. Capitol!
It is walking distance to the U.S. Capitol, Library of Congress, Supreme Court, the National Mall and its monuments, museums and memorials, Metro (orange and blue lines), dozens of restaurants, bars and shops along Pennsylvania Avenue, Union Station, the historic Eastern Market, the Barracks Row district of even more restaurants, bars and shops, the Washington Nationals baseball stadium, many beautiful parks and green spaces and it also has easy access to and from Interstate 395.
