The Pear Tree Cottage is located in the small waterfront community of Resthaven, approximately 5 miles east of historic Bath, NC, on the Pamlico River. This area is commonly referred to as North Carolina's Inner Banks - i.e. the rivers and sounds that are inland from the Outer Banks. Most of the cottages in Resthaven have been owned by the same family for several generations. The owners of this cottage live next door and are available to assist should a question or need arise.
The Pear Tree Cottage was purchased by Tony & Mary Lewis in the summer of 2013 from its long time owner. Over the winter months the cottage received extensive renovations - from all new plumbing, heating/air, and electrical systems to new 'pick-wick' wood paneling and trim. The original pine floors were uncovered and refinished. The original 1948 enameled kitchen sink with built in drain boards was restored. The decor is retro 1960's. You will not find a cuter cottage.
The 1000 square-foot cottage features a master bedroom with queen size bed and large closet. The second bedroom has twin beds. The property has a laundry room and bath with cast-iron tub/shower. The large, fully-equipped kitchen has an eat-in counter with three stools and overlooks the family room with views of the river. The generous size family room has a day-bed sofa, wicker glider/rockers, and kitchen table that seats four. Continuous windows along the south side offer a full view of the river.
The cottage sits on a high, deep lot. You can relax under the pines and enjoy the refreshing river breeze. The 70+ year old pear tree, the namesake of the cottage, produces an abundance of pears each summer. A private dock offers a location for sun bathing, fishing & crabbing, swimming, and boating. The river is only 3 feet deep at the dock, and increases very gradually as you go out, which is great for swimming. The bottom is sandy and clean. The rental includes two kayaks - a short paddle will take you through Rumley Marsh or to St Clair's Creek, where you may sight a bald eagle.
To the east is Indian Island and the Pamlico Sound, with Ocrakoke Island on the other side. To the west are the historic towns of Bath and Washington. You can also take a 25 minute ride on the ferry that crosses the river in front of the cottage to visit the town of Aurora.
Nearby historic Bath is the oldest town in NC and home of the notorious pirate Blackbeard. Bath offers a general store, diner, pizzeria, marina, bank and post office. Several historic properties are open to the public including St. Thomas Church, built in 1734 and the oldest church in NC. 12 miles north is Belhaven which has several restaurants and a supermarket.
If you are looking for a quiet, peaceful, and relaxing place to spend a few days - the Pear Tree Cottage is for you.
Historic Bath is 5 miles away, historic Washington is 20 miles, Goose Creek State Park is 12 miles. Manteo and the Outer Banks is approximately 100 miles.
