Overview

About the property

5 Bedrooms, 5 Bathrooms, Sleeps 10

This 200 year old, Napoleonic era villa was bought 30 years ago by the owners and restored with style, care and attention to historical detail. The house has a charming atmosphere and is full of light and very comfortable. There are 22 rooms in total spread over three floors, including six bedrooms, six bathrooms, one small kitchen upstairs and a large historical vaulted-ceiling kitchen, two dining rooms, three living rooms, a library and a study. The furniture is in excellent condition and gels perfectly with the historical ambiance of the house. This is a villa where a large family, several small families or group of friends can stay and enjoy the beautiful Piedmont area. The villa is near to the central piazza of the old village of Castagnole delle Lanze, and the lower garden opens directly on the piazza where the city hall, the church and the center of the village are situated. Nevertheless, the high walls surrounding the gardens permit a great sense of privacy and silence.

The town of Castagnole delle Lanze sits atop one of the rolling hills of the Alto Monferrato, on the edge of the Langhe where some of the most famous Italian wines are produced, such as Barolo, Barbera, Dolcetto, Asti Spumante and the famous sweet vine Moscato. There are also world-renowned gastronomic products such as the white and black truffles of Alba and diverse cheeses. The region is home to many villages and castles that can be visited, such as Castello di Barolo, Castello di Serralunga, and many others. This area was dominated by some important Italian families (such as the Alfieri and San Marzano), all of which built great homes and castles. The largest towns in the vicinity of Castagnole are Asti (20 km) and Alba (20 km). Both are gorgeous medieval towns which possess excellent markets with fruit, organic breads, vegetables, fish, wines and everything you need. In the house you will find much information about markets, cinema, theaters and some of the very best restaurants in Italy.

The house is arranged as follows. On the lower floor there is a vaulted open-air portico, ideal for summer dining, adjacent to the large ‘rosengarden’ with many different roses and cherry trees (as well as a large shed that can be used as a garage); a large kitchen with dishwasher, oven and a large fireplace; and a dining room with a table seating 14 people. The first floor is flanked by two courtyards with small gardens, one containing mint, sage and rosemary and another protected behind high walls in typical Italian style. There is also one master bedroom and a bathroom, large and small living rooms, and a library rich with books in many languages. On the second level there are five master bedrooms and four bathrooms, a large dining room and a kitchen. Both the first and second floors have balconies overlooking the rolling hills of Piedmonte beneath the dramatic Alps in the distance. There are also fuzball, ping-pong and a billiard table.

About Sandra Sassaroli

I'm a MD, I grew up in Rome and work in Milano as Psychiatrist and Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist. I'm married with a electronic engeneer, Fabrizio, and my only daughter lives between Tubingen and Ann Arbor, she is married with a american archaeologist, and is archeologist of iron age herself. We are often in Piedmont in our house in the periods where there are no guests.

Sandra Sassaroli purchased this villa in 2014

Why Sandra Sassaroli chose Castagnole delle Lanze

The family of my husband (his mother) has roots in Castagnole by the side of his mother. He is born in Florence and the family of his father is florentine. We choosed to renew the house when we married many years ago, and we still go often to stay with relatives and friends who live in the area.

What makes this villa unique

I fell in love with my house because it is not isolated, so that I can stay and sleep alone, but very private and with a unique view on the Langhe, with its castles and vineyards.

Notes:
castagnole is near to the classical amenities of italian vine, such as barbera, barolo, barbaresco and many others. there are many villages around where one can eat and drink and visit castles, as castello di serralunga, castello di barolo and many others. in ctober and november there is the 'fiera del tartufo' in alba, and the white alba truffle is said to be the best in the world. The piedmont cousine, with some french remembering is elegant and one of the best in Italy (fonduta con il tartufo, bagna caoda in winter, carne cruda all'albese, torta di nocciole, and many other specialities. Castagnole is 45 minutes away from Turin, and 1 and a half hour away from Milan, and one hour away from Genova. The area is safe and people are very traditional, serious, great workers, respectful of tourists, and discrete.

Pictures of the House are Great, and the Stay was Better!

  • 5 of 5

A group of seven stayed at the villa in October 2017. Spacious and beautiful accommodations for the week. Plenty of electrical outlets and plenty of hot water. The house and gardens (especially the library) are spectacular, even better than the pictures. After seeing other villages in the area, Castagnole was an ideal staging area for the Piemonte, not too crowded, with everything we could ask for close at hand. (Check out both Locanda Roma and the Wine Story restaurant.) The villa owners were responsive and a pleasure to deal with. Places like this villa help all us tourists become travelers.

We stayed 5 days and loved our stay in this charming house. We were very comfortable and we had an assigned parking spot, which was terrific. I can’t wait to stay there again and I highly recommend it. Thank you

What a great stay!

  • 5 of 5

We met 5 other family and friends at this home for a week-long stay. It was great! The home is large and was comfortable for us. We did some cooking at home and the supplies there were good as well. We did not use the downstairs/outdoor kitchen as the weather was cooler when we were there. The bathrooms are no en-suite but there were enough for us all to be comfortable. The location is great as well were able to walk to dinner, the grocery store etc. This home is probably so beautiful in the spring and summer as the gardens are full of lovely flowering plants and trees. We did enjoy a few persimmons from the tree in the yard. We would all definitely return. Thanks Sandra and Giovanna!

Wonderful holiday in delightful villa

  • 5 of 5

We are a party of 8 women who enjoy travelling in the European countryside. Our stay in in Castagnole was perfect. We gathered at night in the main room upstairs off the kitchen for long dinners and fabulous wine, produce from local markets in the area. We travelled around everyday by car through the green countryside of Piemonte, Alba our favourite town for fabulous shopping but the other smaller towns were fascinating and we still have more places to explore next time. This comfortable villa was the perfect retreat after a busy day. All the rooms spacious, beds comfortable, beautiful views from almost ever room. We spent one day lolling around in the orchard garden in the gentle Piemonte sunshine with lunch served in the beautiful shaded loggia. Drinks in the upper garden in the evening. The library downstairs and sun room get the afternoon sun so are relaxing retreats for those quiet moments. This is a family home, with old world charm and the little village has a corner store, a pharmacy, wine shop, pizzeria and a pretty cafe/restaurant just a few minutes walk from the villa. At the bottom of the hill is a super market so everything is very convenient. What a beautiful holiday. thank you!

A true gem!

  • 5 of 5

Wow! What to say about this amazing find. This is truly a hidden gem in the most charming town. The website does not do it justice. The uniqeness of the house is quite remarkable. Each room has its own charm and many have breathtaking views of the town and the surrounding hills of Piedmont, covered in vineyards! The house was very well supplied with all the essentials and more. Waiting to greet us were 2 lovely ladies to orient us to the home and even provided a bottle of wine. We were 3 generations and we all enjoyed the home. Short drive to many cities and to the so e of the worlds best wines!!! The town itself is a must see, nice supermarket, weekly farmers market, local restaurants and amazing wine bar and eatery!! I hope to make it back soon! Thank you Sandra!
