Cozy home with everything you need

  • 5 of 5

Thank you for sharing your home with us. It was cozy and had everything we needed and more! We were visiting family so we didn’t really use the kitchen besides glasses and a plate or two- but the kitchen was well stocked with anything a person would need. The bedrooms were very comfortable. We stayed in the pineapple one. Very comfortable bed. Our son had fun catching little lizards. The yard is lush and beautiful. I like the gate at the driveway entrance for an added feeling of security. I also loved that there was snorkel gear (quite a few sets) to use, although we didn’t get to use it as it rained our entire stay in Hilo. Overall a very nice house, very comfortable. It definitely has a ton of charm!

Stay away, they dubiously kept part of the security deposit

  • 1 of 5

I won't review the house or its amenities, but the owners' business conduct. A few hours after we moved out, we received only half of our deposit back with a comment that there was a water damage on the counter. That was curious because the counters are tiled and I could not remember any water spill from my final walk-through.

I asked three times for photos that showed the damage and only received a promise to send some. 10 days later, still no photo, other comment, or refund. The amount is too low that I would spend hours on the phone with the credit card company and VRBO, but it's annoying and an unfair practice.

Owner's Response: I apologize for not sending the photo's in a timely manner. It is no excuse rather a complication that the day this took place I responded to your request that I was at the hospital and would send photos the following weekend. It was a difficult day and I forgot to send the photos. We sincerely want every guest to enjoy their visit to Hilo and have nothing but great memories of Hawaii and our house. The $50 withheld from the deposit does not cover the cost to repair the water damage throughout the house. Only half the deposit was withheld as a way to offset some of the repair cost and to not offend the guest by retaining the full damage deposit. Wooden floors throughout the house and the wooden counter top between the kitchen and dining area all suffered deep water damage and needed to be resealed quickly before the next guests arrival. We ask that wet beach towels be left in the tiled bathroom not on the wooden surfaces. The house is designed for the tropical environment but prolonged exposure to water does damage the interior surfaces. In the years we have provided our home for guests we have retained a deposit only one other time and we hope future guests are not deterred by this guests experience. The wooden floor is resealed and looks great! Clearly this experience had a serious detrimental effect on memories of your stay with us so we will refund the balance of your deposit and hope you consider staying with us again in the future.

The home was very well equipped and very comfortable for our group of 5 adults and one baby

  • 4 of 5

We really appreciated that the kitchen was very organized and equipped plus the whole home was very clean. The baby seat and Pack and Play was so convenient for us and we did not have to bring anything like that for our little granddaughter. The little teddy bear on the bed was a nice touch for her too. We really enjoyed our stay and were lucky to have no rain while we were there, unusual for Hilo.

Just a few comments. There were only 4 chairs for our group of 6 but we did find some folding chairs in the basement. The basement is promoted as an additional space but smelled very musty. I don't think it would be very comfortable for sleeping or hanging out in.

My last comment and I don't want to appear to harsh, I think the towels could be in a bit better shape (they were quite tattered) and we never did find the 2 beach towels. Just as a comparison, the home we stayed at it Kona, had many towels both for the home and the beach, which accommodated all of us. And the Hilo home was slightly more expensive to rent than the other home.

Wonderful Beach House

  • 5 of 5

My family of 3 stayed in this Hilo house for 3 nights in January. It was everything promised and more! I really liked the frogs and birds at night though they did keep my son awake. There was a very pretty, but territorial red bird (cardinal, I think?) in residence in the carport who kept pecking at his reflection in the car windshield/mirrors. He was quite entertaining.

The surf was quite high & stormy while we were in town which limited our swimming and lava boat tour, however we were able to snorkel at Richardson Park and swim with a HUGE Honu. Despite low visibility we saw hundreds of fish. The swells and currents were very strong, however so we had to be very careful to stay close enough to the lifeguard shack but not let the heavy waves throw us on the rocks. We were very glad we had rented a Jeep when we headed up Saddle Road to try to stargaze on Mauna Kea. We were told the road was under construction. I thought maybe some traffic cones, new asphalt and short delays. But the road is literally being TOTALLY rebuilt for a good 5 mile stretch and is down to gravel/lava rocks with huge ruts and holes. Throw in heavy, heavy rain - especially at night and it can be a challenge. We saw two low-clearance cars get stranded (luckily going the opposite direction). After all that the mountain was socked in (a very rare occurrence) so we couldn't see the stars but still had a fun adventure. Great snorkeling at Kapoho Tide pools. They are hard to find.

Would definitely come back to this house again. Maybe in the summer when it's not so stormy.

Great vacation!

  • 4 of 5

Thank you for allowing our family the use of your home! The home was the right size for us. (5 adults and child)

We arrived at night and it was difficult to locate the entrance and we passed it the first time by. The house number is on the stonewall at the entrance to gated driveway and hard to see. We easily figured out the entrance after that.

We enjoyed our stay even though the home got very hot in the afternnon into evening even with all of the ceiling fans on in every room. The ocean breeze is blocked by trees across the street. Additional floor/pedestal fans would have helped some.

We walked to the various nearby beaches each morning. The convenience to the beach was awesome!! We appreciated having the boogie boards available for us to use.

Your home is very welcoming and relaxing. Enjoyed cooking on that awesome gas stove!!
