Three Bedroom Fishing Village Saltbox
About Catherine Whalen
I am a retired medical professional who has spent most weekends and all my summers in this area of the Baccalieu Trail for the past number of years. When this property became available in 2001 my husband and I along with a family friend decided to buy it and restore it to its original glory and this year we decided to allow visitors to rent it and enjoy the same newfoundland experience we have been enjoying in this area for many years.
Catherine Whalen purchased this Cottage in 2001
Why Catherine Whalen chose Ochre Pit Cove
This little gem is probably the oldest traditional saltbox home along the Baccalieu Trail and when the opportunity became available to purchase it, we didn't hesitate and it has been a labor of love bringing it back to life. Now it sits proudly in this great little fishing village.
What makes this Cottage unique
We have a large wrap around patio which give great ocean views and the interior is furnished with antiques and vintage, quirky re-purposed furniture.

Quaint cottage that’s in a great area. Beautifully re-stored with everything you need.
If you want to explore this part of the Avalon, this is the perfect spot to stay as a base. It’s very clean, comfortable and cozy. Bedrooms are a good size and great for a few couples or a family. Kitchen has everything you need including all the essentials. The deck is fully furnished with outdoor furniture and a BBQ. The owner, Kitty, is lovely and extremely helpful. You won’t be disappointed!
Thanks Jenny for taking the time to review your stay at Baccalieu Cottage. It's always rewarding to know that your guests had a nice time and enjoyed their stay. Please come back again and you're always welcome at Baccalieu Cottage.....Kitty
Clean, quiet, comfortable cottage equipped with everything you need for a relaxing vacation.
Enjoyed the view of the ocean from the back deck. It's a very nice older style cottage, good size dining room and living room, kitchen flows well when cooking. The second floor has head banger doorways and I would've liked the side lawn mowed to allow for more useable area on the property (had kids with us), but overall a great place to stay out of town. I would recommend it to anyone. I would likely rent it again when we come back to Newfoundland for a visit!
Hi Billy Penney....Thanks for taking the time to review your stay at Baccalieu Cottage. I'm happy to hear that you enjoyed your stay and that the cottage was a good place to stay on your visit to your ancestral home. We restored the house to a standard that reflected the heritage of a home that was built in 1860 so we retained the lower doorways ( 5' 10") that was original to the house. They are a bit lower than a modern house but guests don't seem to mind the little quirks that come with a heritage home. We like to keep the grounds in neat condition and maintain it weekly but made a conscious decision to keep part of it natural with the beautiful purple rockets and wild Lupines growing there. As you probably noticed, that area is a favourite nesting place for the little songbirds and ground sparrows that like to raise their families there so we took this into consideration when we did the garden plan. Again, thanks for the review and hope to see you again when you come back to Newfoundland for a visit. Regards...Kitty
Our Time at Baccalieu
We stayed at Baccalieu Cottage for 4 nights and it was a dream come true! We could see whales from the cottage deck and had many wonderful walking/hiking excursions in the area.
The cottage was perfect. Tom and Kitty, the owners, were very hospitable and had even put a bottle of wine and fresh codfish in the cottage for us upon our arrival. We would definitely recommend the cottage to anyone considering it. We'd love to come back again.
Maureen.....thank-you so much for taking the time to write a review of your stay at Baccalieu Cottage. It was so nice to meet your husband and daughter and I'm happy that you all enjoyed your experience in our little corner of the world. We would be delighted to host you again if you find yourself back on the Rock. Kitty
Beautiful Seaside Cottage
Our family of four stayed at Baccalieu Cottage for three nights in July 2017. We were greeted by the owner," Kitty" Whalen, upon arrival and she gave us a tour of the home and provided many necessities for our stay. She also arranged for a local fisherman to bring fresh lobsters for our first dinner there-- a great a way to kick off our time at Ochre Pit Cove! The cottage is beautifully decorated and comfortable. It was the perfect place to relax and soak in Newfoundland coastal living.
Rhonda & Marcel....thank-you for taking the time to review your stay at Baccalieu Cottage. I'm happy you and the kids enjoyed the cottage and our great Newfoundland lobsters...they're the best! You are all most welcome to come back anytime. Kitty
A gem for just about any group!
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Baccalieu Cottage. For those who love history, stories, antiques, and lovely decor...this is the place for you. The cottage is beautiful and well kept. A lot of detail has gone into considering people's needs during their stay. The fridge and cupboard have many convenience items, and the kitchen has all the necessary tools to make meals at home. We loved walking less than five minutes to the water, and having a spectacular beach a mere five minute drive away. Our hosts were very considerate and accommodating of our needs...they went above and beyond what most would do for us. Excellent service.
Kim, Dan, Leona & kids.....thank-you so much for the lovely review of your stay at Baccalieu Cottage. I know it must have been challenging for you and Dan on vacation with three small children so I'm happy that Baccalieu Cottage provided your home away from home and it fit all your needs for your family. I would be more than happy to have you all back anytime! Love to all....Kitty
What a charming, beautiful Cottage. We wish we had spent more time here. Kitty did everything to make us enjoy our holidays. The area around is also beautiful with many nice trails with breathtaking views over the ocean.
Kira and Andry,....I'm so happy you enjoyed your stay at Baccalieu Cottage. It was a pleasure to meet you and Andry and your lovely boys. It was great to be a part of your first vacation to Newfoundland and I hope you made lots of nice memories together in our special little corner of the world. Come back anytime! Kitty
Baccalieu Cottage is located in a small fishing village on the north shore of Conception Bay, Nl. The home is a refurbished mid nineteenth century fishermans home with all the modern conveniences. The area offers fantastic views along both Trinity and Conception Bays. There are icebergs in the spring and whale-watching is a favourite activity of guests at the cottage. There are also lots of opportunities to explore the rugged coastline and photographic opportunities are everywhere. Trinity Bay is just a short drive away and you can visit little coastal communities with names like 'Hearts Content, 'Hearts Desire' and 'Hearts Delight' to name a few. Northern Bay Sands Park is just a few minutes drive away where you can spend the day just relaxing on the beach or if you are brave enough, you can take a dip in the cold Atlantic ocean. Hiking trails are close to the cottage and the village of Grates Cove offers a great place to spend the day exploring. The nearby active fishing town of Bay D' Verde has a museum which will give you an idea of the way of life experienced by Newfoundlanders in days gone by. Just two minutes walk from the cottage you can watch the activity of the friendly local fishermen as they return from the fishing grounds with their catch. Carbonear is a larger town just 20 minutes drive away where you will find supermarkets, shopping and boat tours of the coastline.
