A Boho Chic getaway in one of Chicago's original Bohemian neighborhoods. This apartment was designed by up-and-coming interior designer Tara Rhode. This one is in a Boho chic style with a combination of Moroccan and East Indian accents. One bedroom is a double bed and the other is a twin and a trundle. All of the beds have new memory foam mattresses. The kitchen has a stove and refrigerator, but no dishwasher. The kitchen table seats 6.
It's an old building so there's not central AC, but there are window units in each of the bedrooms.
There's a little deck on the back and a grill on the top floor which can be used on the deck up there. There's a nice view of the city skyline.
There is a laundry room on the top floor of the building with two washers and dryers that each take quarters. There's space to park one car in an enclosed garage with a remote-control opener. Parking is free.
Public transit is very convenient. The #56 bus stops almost in front of the building and goes downtown. A 7 minute walk away is the Logan Square Blue Line station that goes downtown or to O'Hare. There is a Divvy bike station at the Logan Square Blue Line stop as well as an Enterprise car share lot at 2808 N. Christina about a 5 minute walk away.
I'm an artist who has lived in Chicago since 2002. My studio is in the storefront of this building that I bought in the old Polish neighborhood on Milwaukee Avenue. I've turned one of my apartments as an experiment in August 2013. I like to stay in BnB's whenever I travel around the country for my public art commissions and painting exhibits.
Lynn Basa purchased this apartment in 2008
This part of Milwaukee Avenue is an old Main Street and I think it reminded me of Pittsburgh, where I was born and where my earliest visual memories were imprinted. I've also always dreamt of having my studio in an old storefront. Now I'm living the dream -- and it's as good as I imagined it would be! I started by renting out the building to young artists and musicians because I wanted to create a community in the building. That part has worked beautifully, but I'm the sort of person who always wants to see around the next bend, to constantly be improving. I wanted to see what it would be like to furnish an apartment completely in thrift and consignment finds, so I asked an interior designer friend of mine, Tara Rhode, who needed a starter project for her portfolio, if she'd be willing to take on the challenge. She was and we worked beautifully together, scouring the Midwest, texting each other images of our finds, enlisting our mothers' help in the process. We found many more things than we could fit into the apartment, but thanks to Tara's expert editing, the unit pulled together so well that I decided to do another one which I'm calling 'Bohemian Hideaway'
When I moved to Chicago in 2002 from Seattle, I did so because I wanted to live in a larger city that had seemingly limitless opportunities. Chicago definitely did not disappoint! I will never begin to even make a dent in all of the cultural, culinary, and social delights this city has to offer. Early on when I moved here I was talking to someone who had also moved to Chicago simply because they were drawn by the gravitational pull of this big, friendly city and I asked him what it is it about this town that is so attractive? He said, 'Because it's like what a big city should be.' And that's it. It's gritty, it's complex, it's dangerous, it's historic, it's unbelievably diverse, and full of endless opportunities. I can understand why Alex Kotlowitz named his wonderful book on Chicago, 'Never A City So Real'. That sums it up perfectly.
I stayed at the Bohemian Hideaway on a Friday, and Saturday evening with three girlfriends. We were in Chicago on a girls' weekend, celebrating the upcoming wedding of our girlfriend. I had originally booked two of Lynn's properties, but found that the four of us would be more than comfortable at Bohemian Hideaway. I contacted Lynn about a partial refund, and she was more than gracious enough to work with me despite the short notice.
I have stayed at another of Lynn's listings as business brings me to the Chicago area frequently, and currently have a future booking. I enjoy the décor of Lynn's spaces, and the modular couches you see in the photo of Bohemian Hideaway, two of the cushions are the size of a full bed. On this recent trip, two of us ladies slept in the living room and made up "beds" and two took each of the two bedrooms. Close enough to the blue line, with a bus stop right outside the building-- in addition to a stylish, clean place to stay and the proximity to amazing tacos across the street-- Bohemian Hideaway is a real winner.
Nice appartement, basically everything which is needed is there. Door locking is a little bit tricky but once you got it it is no problem. We used the blue line a lot and were happy with this place to stay
Highly recommend!
The apartment had really nice features like a tin pressed ceiling in every room. The interior design had some bold colors while still feeling homey and comfortable.
This was a great place to stay and we didn't want to leave. The neighborhood had a great bakery with nice coffee just across the street. And, there were two farmer's markets close by.
We appreciated that there was no TV.
Awasome place. There is more the apartment thank you actually might need for a 3 day get away. No tv. But only used the place to sleep and shower and change. There is nothing needed here ever, will be coming back and doing bussiness again
Thank you so much
We have stayed at both of these apartments several times and always are pleased with our stay. Lynn is very helpful and accommodating. Both of these apartments have lots of personality and it's fun to see the changes in the neighborhood with every visit. Public transportation is really easy from this location, a big plus to us. The apartments are clean and comfortable for either a short of extended visit.
