The spacious private deck is surrounded by black oaks, ponderosa and sugar pines and both young and mature cedars and is equipped with a propane barbecue, picnic table, assorted utility tables, lounge chairs and shade umbrellas.

The living room features a large stone fireplace with an efficient wood burning insert and the raised hearth is surrounded by several couches, providing a cozy place to hang out in the cooler seasons.

A double futon/couch is available in the living room.

TWAIN HARTE LAKE MEMBER

Twain Harte Lake is a private lake which renters of our cabin will have access to.

The daily fees for 2017 ( Memorial Day - Labor Day) are $6/per person 3 years and older/per day.

In addition, there are lots of swimming options in the area which are free or have a small ($5 per vehicle) day-use fee which we would be happy to recommend.

About Nelia Johnson

My sister and I grew up in Berkeley where our father taught engineering at the University 0f California. We began coming up to Twain Harte in the early fifties during summer vacation from school to escape the fog of the Bay Area. We rented at first but soon fell in love with Twain Harte's laid back lifestyle and in 1957 our parents decided to buy property and build our own place. We spent much of our childhood and adolescence at the cabin, skiing at Dodge Ridge in the winter and enjoying the endless summers swimming at Twain Harte lake, hanging out with friends and enjoying the many activities available in the area. We both eventually moved to Canada, married and had children but returned to Twain Harte each summer with the kids and now they are coming to Twain Harte with their children.

Nelia Johnson purchased this cabin in 1957

Why Nelia Johnson chose Twain Harte

The cabin has been in the family since 1957 and has been a huge and very influential part of our childhood and continues to be our family oasis now into the fourth-generation.

What makes this cabin unique

The cabin is located on a very quiet street on a large lot which provides lots of privacy. We love to sit out on the deck in the early morning and watch the local wildlife begin their day. There are wildlife feeders in several places providing us a close-up look at the many varieties of squirrels and birds and it is fairly common to see deer in the meadow just beyond the deck. We have maintained a small library of books about the natural environment of the Sierras and Gold Rush history, which is available to guests.

We always love Twain Harte it's like home

  • 3 of 5

The owner was great !! I had a few questions while we were there and she got back to me right away. The location was great nice walking distance from everything. The closing instructions were vague so I cleaned like it was my house and I am pretty sure it was cleaner than when we arrived. My mistake I didn't notice there was no dishwasher but it was ok . Under things to bring maybe paper products, Napkins, paper plates Aluminum foil should be added. Beds were a bit lumpy. All in all we could never have a bad stay in Twain Harte

Great family cabin! Perfect for our needs!

  • 5 of 5

We had the pleasure of renting this small family cabin. It is perfect for a large family. It can fit more than one family, but the upstairs sleeping quarters and bathroom is more of a loft style, with an open door, so just something to consider when renting. This cabin is a bit more rustic than others we looked at (2 prong wall plugs), and in the main living room area lighting was a little dark/limited. We were here during a major snow storm, with a power outtage, and couldn't locate enough materials to start a fire (no paper, firestarter logs or small kindling). Plenty of wood logs and lighters though. The heating system was fantastic and kept the cabin nice and toasty so we were able to withstand the loss of heat during the power outtage. Furniture was comfy, wifi was strong and enabled my wife to work, and we enjoyed the lack of cable TV (they do provide Roku service). It gave us a chance to unplug and unwind. All in all I'd recommend this cabin to others (and recommend some upgrades on lighting to the owners) but our stay was wonderful and the owners were great to work with. Also, for future renters, the driveway really only fits 2 cars as it is small and "u" shaped around a bunch of trees. And this was a pet friendly rental! Highlight of the visit was seeing so many deer, including ones playing right outside the window next to the cabin!!

Cute and cozy as expected

  • 5 of 5

The cabin was perfect for my fiance, me and our two small dogs. Nelia was super responsive and gave genuine replies to all my questions and concerns. You really feel like you are in nature as we woke up to deer every morning and were surrounded by trees. The house provided everything we needed and what it didnt have we were aware of before we went. I would highly recommend this cabin for a nice getaway that is among the trees and close to fun outdoor activities.
