Sapelo Island is a barrier island off the coast of Georgia about 45 minutes south of Savannah. The island is the size of Manhattan but has a population of 70 not 4 million people like Manhattan.

Sapelo island is accessible only by state ferry or private boat.

Some say Sapelo has the longest undeveloped beach line on the east coast. The Island is home to the University of Georgia Marine institute, R J Reynolds Mansion , Sapelo Island National Estuarine Research Reserve, The Great Indian Shell Ring, and the Geechee community of Hogg Hammock.

Cozy Cabin on Sapelo Island

  • 5 of 5

This is a truly lovely place to stay. It was exactly the right size for two ladies and a young girl. The kitchen was well stocked with cooking needs. Everyone on the island was extremely helpful even though we weren't staying at the height of the season. Overall a relaxing way to spend a few days after Christmas.

Cozy cottage, felt clean, had everything we needed.

  • 4 of 5

We loved the cottage! It felt clean and was comfortable. The golf cart was a blast to have (and very necessary), we loved that the cottage came with beach chairs and umbrellas, that really was a game changer. The only negative thing I have to say is the bath water smelled like rotten eggs, which was very nasty. But over all it was a great visit to Sapelo Island!

Just what we needed!

  • 5 of 5

This was a great weekend trip for our family. Our contact for the property was fantastic to deal with. She picked us up at the pier as scheduled, showed us around the property, and brought us great meals (highly recommended.) Though I think we had the slowest golf-cart on the island, which led to some serious golf-cart envy, it was a very fun way to explore the area.

The beach was amazing. A number of times, we were the only people on the entire beach. Our kids were able to see lots of deer, alligators and an owl. On the beach one night, we were able to watch a turtle emerge from a nest and witness the Milky Way in all it's wonderful glory.

We will definitely go back!

Very Peaceful.

  • 5 of 5

Golf cart was great to ride to the beach. The beach was peaceful every day. Only a handful of people ever around. No one loud, just ocean and breeze. Went to the beach one night and saw a baby loggerhead turtle and some kind of biolumnescent plant? animal? in the water and on the shore. It was really cool. Didn't have any major bug problems and the accommodations were nice. Beach chairs and umbrella were provided which was nice as well. Great time here.

Such a cool place

  • 5 of 5

my wife and I want to do something a little bit different, so we went to Sapelo Island and stayed in this charming cottage. we felt as though we had the whole island to ourselves as we explored every corner, went fishing and crabbing, and ate some really good food. We had a golf cart to drive around on which was a lot of fun. I had a minor emergency and forgot my meds so Doc Bill and Annita took us to the pharmacy in Darien, and we had the pleasure of having lunch with them as well. They are very hospitable and the place is very cozy. Francine even loaned us a couple of crab traps so we could catch some crabs. Awesome!

Peaceful retreat for the perfect vacation.

  • 5 of 5

What a stay! The room is part of a historic converted store/restaurant on the island. The building is nestled beneath a massive oak covered with Spanish moss. You would never guess from looking at it from the outside...but it is VERY modern and VERY comfortable on the inside. Modern, beautiful kitchen, big comfy bed, fast internet, and a big beautiful television to watch at night (if you're not outside stargazing). There is a woman on the island who will cook for you (Francine). She cooks up the finest seafood you'll ever eat...and she brings lots of it! There are no grocery stores on the island (just a small general store), so bring any other food you'll need. Now for the island itself...where to begin? The beaches are deserted and pristine. The fishing is incredible! You can see every star in the sky at night! I am so happy that there is an affordable and comfortable place on this amazing island. I will never forget my stay, and I will return as often as I can!

Sapelo Island is a pristine barrier island about the size of Manhattan with 70 people living on it. Abundant wildlife and few people make this a very special place.

The Georgia Marine Inst. and the Sapelo Island National Estuarine Research Reserve are great places to visit and learn about marine life.

The Reynolds Mansion on Sapelo Island is a great trip back into the era of the great millionaires.

An old indian shell city dating back to the Great Pyramids of Egypt can be seen.

The Geechee village of Hog Hammock is your base and where the adventure begins.

One of the oldest general stores in Georgia is your home and also a museum.

Many miles of unspoiled beaches and miles of pristine maritime forrest are waiting to be discovered.

Rent a golf car or bike and see parts of the island. Get a private tour and see the north end of the island.
