Photos and Description of the Groveland vacation lodge rental

7 Bed, 7 Bath Lodge. Just 11 Miles From The Yosemite Entrance.

Located 11 miles from the Big Oak Flat entrance to Yosemite National Park, Lilliskog is nestled on a serene mountain top surrounded by the Stanislaus National Forest, Lillaskog Lodge is perfect for family reunions, larger parties and special events such as retreats, weddings, etc. It is a wonderful place to start new family traditions!

Lillaskog Lodge is located 11 miles from the Big Oak Flat entrance to Yosemite National park. Whether you are exploring Yosemite, entertaining family or hosting a large group, Lillaskog has something for everyone.

The 5000 square foot Lodge is styled with a Swedish flair borrowing from the family’s Swedish ancestry. The name Lillaskog (pronounced Lillaskoog) is Swedish for “Little Forest”.

After your day exploring Yosemite, BBQ on the patio or cook your family’s favorite dishes in our large, fully equipped kitchen. Relax in the spacious great room, or borrow a book from the loft library and curl up by the stone fireplace.

Lillaskog has free Wi-Fi and flat screen, satellite TV’s in the Great Room and all of the bedrooms.

The main floor of the Lodge is totally wheelchair accessible and consists of a large, fully equipped Kitchen and the Great Room with floor to ceiling windows and a stone fireplace. A piano is available in the Dining area adjacent to the Great Room, for those who are musically inclined. This floor has two bedrooms and three bathrooms one of which is fully wheelchair accessible. Surrounding the Lodge’s main level is a wheelchair accessible wraparound balcony so you can enjoy a sunrise over Yosemite and the sunsets over the Stanislaus National forest.

Our laundry facility is also located on the main floor.

The upper loft area features the library and a master bedroom suite with a private balcony and bath.

The lower level includes a bonus room which can be set up with 6 twin beds or as a conference/meeting room. The lower level also has three bedrooms and three bathrooms.

All of our bedrooms are appointed with soft, quality bed linens, individual climate control, irons and flat screen satellite TV’s.

Our bathrooms are stocked with big, soft, fluffy towels, hair dryers and complimentary soap, shampoo and conditioner. The Half Dome bathroom on the main floor is ADA wheelchair accessible with a removable elevated toilet seat and shower chair.

The grounds surrounding the Lodge have two lawn areas. The lower, larger lawn area features the Gazebo with an incredible view as the backdrop. This area is often used for weddings.

The upper lawn area is a favorite for watching the beautiful sunsets or roasting marshmallows over the fire pit. It is also adjacent to our large cobblestone area which can be set up with tables for outdoor dining for our large groups to enjoy. A wonderful spot for wedding receptions with beautiful views!

Swim or fish in the nearby Rainbow Pool, go whitewater rafting down the Tuolumne River. Hike the trails of Yosemite and take your own photographs of the natural treasures that you can only experience in Yosemite. Visit Bodie State Park which is a real old west ghost town or pan for gold in Historic Jamestown.

What to do in Yosemite

By Bill Charlson, Owner of Lillaskog Lodge

Many guests at Lillaskog are visiting Yosemite for the first time and often ask what they should try to do and see. This is often with a limitation that 'We only have one day, two days, etc'. I have been exploring Yosemite for over 49 years and there is so much to do and see that one could not do it all in a lifetime, but as a retired park ranger I like to tell them about the things they must see and do to get the most benefit from a short stay.

If you have just one day you have to visit Yosemite Valley. To get there, on the way from the Big Oak Flat entrance to the valley, watch for the turnout that comes right after the road junction to Foresta. This is where you get the first view of Half Dome and El Capitan to take pictures. This overlook is one of those vistas that must have amazed people for centuries the first time they get a glimpse of Yosemite.

You will then come to a junction at the bottom of the grade when you first get to the Merced River. This is Highway 140. You should turn left to head into Yosemite Valley. In just a little ways you will cross a bridge that goes across the Merced River and the road becomes one way. Just a little way past this point is a delightful spring and a turnout on the right-hand side of the road. This is called Fern Spring and is historically revered as a sacred place by the Indians.

When you get to the turnoff to Highway 41, you should take it, and go to the parking area at Tunnel View for more pictures. It is only a few minutes and this is one of the views of Yosemite that is worth it. The vista at tunnel view is a great view of El Capitan, Half Dome, Bridalveil Falls, Cloud's Rest and Sentinel Dome.

The next stop I recommend is the parking area at Bridalveil Falls or along the road below Bridalveil. If you are inclined to walk a little, it is an easy hike to Bridalveil Falls. There are fantastic views of the Falls and El Capitan, and often it is possible to watch the rock climbers high up on the face of El Capitan.

Further on there is another wide spot in the road with lots of room for parking and good views of Yosemite Falls. At the end is the little church which is the oldest building in Yosemite Valley.

If people would like a short hike I recommend that they park in the parking area at Curry Village and take the shuttle to the trail head at Happy Isle. From there it is a moderate walk to Vernal Falls. If you would like more of a hike I recommend you take the mist trail to the top of Vernal Falls. Then I recommend that you take the shuttle to Yosemite Village, the Visitor's Center, the Museum, and the Ansel Adams Gallery.

Folks often want to know where to eat in the park and about special programs, ranger talks, and tours. When you pass through the kiosk at the park entrance they will give you a newsprint publication titled Yosemite Today. It is loaded with information about what is going on in the park during the time period it covers.

One thing that people often really enjoy is a breakfast or lunch at the Ahwahnee Hotel Dining Room. The dinners are pricier and there is a dress code requesting gentlemen to wear jackets and neckties in the evening, however, breakfast and lunch are not too bad. You can wear regular tourist’s clothes, and for $15.00 to $25.00 you can get a nice meal in a 5 star dining setting in the very best of the grand old national park hotels! That is value for your money and an especially great experience if you only have one day in the park.

Another possible short hike in the valley is a walk to Mirror Lake. The walk is gentle and there are great views of Half Dome because you are directly below it. You can make a longer loop past Mirror Lake as well if you like. There is a bridge that crosses over the creek a couple of miles above Mirror Lake.

There is a newly renovated trail system to Lower Yosemite Falls. This is a must for the one day visitor. The quality of the trail, the design, the planning that went into this is befitting for one of our nations greatest natural treasures, the tallest waterfall in North America. There has even been special attention given to making it wheelchair accessible, so it can be enjoyed by people with limited mobility.

Now if anybody did all of the above, that’s a pretty full day in Yosemite Valley.

If you have two days, you have to go to Glacier Point. You get a whole different view of the valley and breathtaking views of the high country. There are opportunities for great panorama photos. If you would like to hike a little, then Sentinel Dome and Taft Point should be included. I'm always fascinated by the fissures at Taft point. These are crevasses in the granite that go for hundreds of feet deep.
