About the property

Brand new, spacious, airy cottage across from beach, great views, yet private

Permit Number: BBWK2014-0001

Hawaii TAT # W40850386-01

We have passed rigorous inspections for your health and safety. You can be confident we will not be closed down by the county.

Escape the traffic and the touristy areas yet be right on the ocean watching sunrises and moon rises over the ocean, surfers, whales, windsurfers and kite surfers. Our location is central to all the places you will want to go and we are at your service to share our knowledge and love of Maui. We offer guests a chance to join our local friends at our BBQs or to join us for a swim in our favorite secret spots, just a short drive away. Guests can also choose to just do their own thing or to book a more extensive tour with us. It's totally up to you.

The Space

Our cottage was built in 2012 and we welcomed our first guests in 2013. It has all appliances , comfy Serta bed, all-cotton bedding, pillows, towels, etc. Sliding mirrored doors separate the bedroom from main room. The cottage sits on the ocean below our upscale neighborhood and your only neighbor is a doctor on one side and us up the hill behind in the home we bought in 1999. If you are traveling with another couple, we also have a room with its own bath in the main house for rent and full use of the rest of the house. See ad at

My husband and I stayed in the cottage a couple of nights to check it out and make sure it is homey. The bed is so comfortable -- Serta mattress, plush mattress pad and new all-cotton sheets quilt and shams are wonderful!

Now with air-conditioning and Direct TV! And we have an AED in the main house, a Christmas gift from our son!

As much privacy or socialization as you like -- I stock it with coffee, tea and condiments and bread, bagels and butter in the freezer to get you started on breakfast. We provide you with snorkel gear, beach chairs, coolers, etc. and give you tips on good things to do and things to avoid.

Separate bedroom and bathroom has 2 doors so there is privacy if one person wants to sleep and the other stay up or get up. Plenty of room for two or for a family with a child who can sleep in a crib (available to rent from No Ka Oi Baby Rentals) or on the couch.

We can also refer you to friends who will give you local rates on activities such as water sports, downhill biking, used car rental and art gallery. We can give you each 3 day passes to the YMCA for classes, weights, racquetball or pool.

The area we are in is called 'Central Maui' because you can easily drive to everywhere else. Yet our particular location feels more like country with open beach and ocean in front and to the north. Be aware that there is no commercial business within walking distance but the beach and a golf course are there for pleasure walking!

Guest Access

Anywhere on the property.

Interaction with Guests

As much or as little as you like.

The Neighborhood

Our neighborhood is upscale, our neighbors really friendly owners -- we often have BBQs here with them and always include our guests if they'd like to join us. The beach is right across the road in front of the cottage and when the surf is big, it's great to watch the surfers there. When there's no surf, the beach is empty. We love it both ways! It's not a swimming beach but those are a short drive away and by staying here, one avoids the touristy, hot, dusty surroundings of the beach cities

Getting around

We have a bus system and Jordan and I can drop guests off on our way places but a car really is recommended as only tour buses go up into the valleys and up to the top of Haleakala.

Other Things to Note

We stayed in a B & B years ago in Switzerland and the women treated us like family and it had such an impact on us that we try to do the same and make our guests feel at home. On the other hand, you may want to just do your own thing and that's perfectly fine, too.

About gail nagasako

Jordan was born and raised in Lahaina and comes from a well-known and highly respected family. His grandparents immigrated here from Japan. He went to University of Hawaii for 3 and a half years and has traveled extensively in the South Pacific. He and his wife also traveled England, Sweden and Europe and a half-dozen US states. He was owner of a highly successful fish wholesale business and knows just about everything there is to know about the ocean and the things that live there and the things you can do in and on it. He’s a happy-go-lucky guy who is game to do just about anything on a moment’s notice.

Gail was born and raised in Michigan. After graduating from the University of Michigan, she fulfilled a childhood dream by moving to Hawaii. She is the founder of H.A.P.P.Y., a social and networking group for homeschoolers. As such, she planned social events, offered crafts and field trips., She still counsels families interested in homeschooling and is the author of "Homeschooling: Why and How" and "Real L.I.F.E. Parenting." She is a writer, speaker, and artist.

Both Jordan and Gail are veteran Red Cross volunteers and should anything happen on Maui, you will be in good hands.

We have been married for 37 years and have a son, Thumper (Yes, that’s his real name), a retired professional rollerblader, having been in the top ten worldwide his entire career. He competed in such renowned contests as X-Games and Gravity Games. He is the highest rated videographer/editor in Hawaii, having All-Five-Star reviews and participates in a multitude of sports.

Why gail nagasako chose Wailuku

Before we bought this house 15 years ago, I asked my family where they most wanted to live and we all said this subdivision. It's like country but not so wet as Haiku, which can be moldy, nor so hot and dusty and crowded as Kihei and Lahaina, and not so far and cold as Makawao and Kula. We love the feel of being private and quiet and yet so close to everything commercial, the parks, the Maui Arts and Cultural Center, the hospital, the YMCA, the malls, good restaurants and our favorite: Iao Valley where we go for short or long hikes and swims in the cool clean river pools. We didn't want to downsize so we built the cottage last year so we'd have a bit of income so we could continue living in this heavenly spot.

What makes this cottage unique

We pride ourselves in giving the personal touch. We offer our guests a chance to mix with locals at our BBQs, or to join us for a swim in our favorite spots. And if they want to remain totally on their own we respect that as well.

Fresh air, beach ambiance, not touristy, views of sunrises and moon rises and whales playing (December through March) and surfers, stand up paddlers, and an endless source of driftwood for our fire pits.

We are a place for people who don't want to be in a touristy area or condo with people all around, who want a local feel and privacy, yet be on the ocean, and who want to be able to easily access other areas of the island. As you can see from our sample reviews I copy/pasted from another site we've been using, Jordan and I are the properties best amenities!

This gorgeous cottage is every bit as perfect as all the reviews point out. A week after re-entering the real world, I can still only describe our entire experience, in superlatives.

The cottage itself has EVERYTHING you could possibly even THINK about wanting or needing. It’s very clear immediately upon arrival, that our hosts, Gail and Jordan, very much enjoy the “hosting” and preparation for guests. Gail had provided a lot of very valuable information and suggestions as soon as I had booked, and that was only the beginning. She was rapier-like in her responses to the few questions I had prior to departure and, as I was strapped into my WestJet seat, about to turn my phone off for take-off, I received a final pre-arrival email from Gail, telling me the cottage was all ready and waiting for us. We arrived late at night, exhausted. I can’t tell you how sweet and thoughtful we found the treats that Gail had left for us. It honestly felt as though we were being welcomed into a very dear friend’s home, but without them there - lol. Throughout our stay, we mined both Gail and Jordan for information and tips. We were directed to what I have to believe were some of the best non-touristy restaurants on the island. Now, here are the things that meant the most to me, in short form:

1. NO traffic sounds, no people sounds. Only the crashing of the waves on the beach directly across the little road in front of, and below, the cottage.

2. Complete and utter privacy.

3. Gail and Jordan’s responsiveness, discretion and kindness. We could easily have never laid eyes on them, but we wanted to meet them. But we felt absolutely no pressure or expectation to make that happen. The prerogative was entirely ours.

4. COMFY BED. As you would expect from a place this perfect and comfortable, the bed is wonderful. Feels like new and, coupled with the sound of the ocean, ensured some of the best sleeps I’ve had in years.

5. Location, location, location. Easy access to everything on the island, but well away from the touristy areas. A great, good-sized, well-stocked grocery store ten minutes away. Very good restaurants within an easy drive, 15-20 minutes from the the airport (OGG) (but we didn’t hear one plane overhead while we were there.) If you have the opportunity to book this little bit of paradise, do it. You will not be disappointed.

Great location and accomodations

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay at the beach house. We were able to see whales from the deck using the provided binoculars. The beach house has a great location with a grocery store and eateries very close by (short drive). The location is great for driving the road to Hana and visiting the Haleakala summit. The washer and dryer are a wonderful amenity. We also really appreciated all the "extras." The beach house is really well stocked with condiments, coffee, bagels, bread, fresh fruit, and our hosts left a couple special treats as well. It was so nice being able to pack a picnic lunch for the beach, we used the beach chairs and towels they provided as well. We were able to pack lighter because of all that is provided with the beach house. In addition to great accommodations the hosts (Gail and Jordan) are very friendly, helpful, and good communicators. We had no problem finding the house, getting access for the first time, and we had prior knowledge of what was available at the house as well.

Owner's Response: Thank you, Aimee, for your kind review. We are very happy to know you enjoyed the cottage so much. We love our location, too. So close to everything we need and far from what we don't need (dust, blistering heat, traffic, crowds). Hope to see you come back one day! Aloha, Gail

Clean, quiet, well-appointed cottage has EVERYTHING - fall asleep to the sound of the ocean!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I had a wonderfully relaxing stay in March 2018, and would absolutely return on our next visit to Maui. Gail and Jordan are warm, generous hosts who strike the perfect balance between welcoming hospitality and allowing guests space to enjoy a bit of privacy; they were never intrusive at all, but always welcomed questions and were happy to offer advice on fun things to do on the island.

The house itself is perfect for a couple; our favorite thing was that we could sleep with the windows opened, and be lulled into dreamland by the sound of waves crashing on the shore just across the street. It's *very* quiet in the evening, so the deck and living room areas offer a perfect place to kick back and relax with a beverage and the lovely surroundings at the end of a long day. The bed is comfy, and house is clean and exceptionally well-stocked with extra sheets and towels. There were even a few beers and other drinks waiting for us in the fridge when we arrived!

A couple notes on the area: Make an effort to stop by Maui Rotisserie Chicken on Fridays when they're in's a small roadside stand, insanely good, and great for a picnic or just a quick lunch. Also, Donut Dynamite (also in Wailuku) will change your life. They open at 7:00, and you might want to get there early to ensure that you can enjoy all the fabulous flavors (the donuts are made with brioche dough, and it's a revelation). Pro-tip: the PB&J donut will blow your mind...and I'm not really a big fan of PB&J sandwiches. For pharmaceutical-grade amazing sunsets, check out Secret Cove in can find it on Yelp (so, not that well-kept a secret), and it's well worth the drive and the short walk. You'll get some jaw-dropping pics. (And if you're craving a spa day, the Spa at Grand Wailea is phenomenal. It ain't cheap, but it's worth every penny).

Gail and Jordan provided so much more than just a place to crash at night; it really felt like home by the time we left - and it wasn't easy to leave. If you're looking to get away from the tourists and noise, look no further!

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for your kind review. We do aim to please! And thanks for the recommendations for the next guests of things to do. Always good to have a visitor's view. And thank you so much for your great touches, leaving the cottage with so little for us to do to get it ready for the next guests and for all your extra little touches. We don't charge a cleaning fee but anyone who thinks of charging you one should think again. We're lucky you didn't charge us one :-) Thanks, too, for the smoked salmon. We sure enjoyed sharing it with you. A hui hou, Gail & Jordan

Owner's Response: Thanks, Heidi! Hope your yoga retreat is all you hoped it would be. See you Friday when you bring back the stuff we lent you. And thanks for such a head start on the laundry! And for the beautiful bottle of maple syrup. I will use and refill it as it's one of the few sweeteners I actually use. Both were greatly appreciated. Aloha, Gail

A home away from home!

  • 5 of 5

The Cottage was very comfortable and spacious... It was light and bright which was key for my

stay. That was why I chose it and it was all that and more! The ocean breezes were absolutely delightful. The kitchen was perfect for cooking meals. The deck was the best feature as you could sit out for coffee, enjoy the day as well as evening star gazing!!! It was private and peaceful. The lawn was an extra for sunbathing when the sun was off the deck.

Enjoy peace, quiet and privacy when home, yet have an easy drive to all the wonders of Maui. What I love is being able to watch sunrises and then go to Kihei (20 minutes) or Lahaina (35 minutes) for a sunset picnic and come home again to our country-feel area. We almost always have Tradewinds coming right off the ocean so the air is some of the cleanest on the planet.
