Our home and rentals are situated on a hill with expansive views overlooking the colonial town of Alamos and the more distant mountains of the sierra Madre. Our property consists of a two story 'Casa Grande' and a smaller Casita. The VRBO listing number of the Casita is 473047.

The views from this property are spectacular! Relax with a book on one of the patios or swim in the large solar heated pool.

The property is fenced and gated providing security and ample parking for your car. A five minute walk takes you to the cobblestone streets and historic buildings of the Plaza de Armas. There your will find restaurants featuring famous Sonoran food, artisan shops to browse, a lovely colonial church, and a fascinating museum depicting life in Alamos during the 17th and 18th centuries. Stroll these streets or book a birding tour, a rafting trip down the Rio Mayo river or go horseback riding and explore the surrounding countryside. Stop by the five star Hacienda de Los Santos for a glass of tequila, a meal, or a visit to their spa. Return home for a drink on the patio viewing the sunset over the mountains and the twinkling lights of the city.

About Elizabeth Packard

I had been enjoying vacations in Mexico for some years before I retired. I spent many years teaching high school English, speech and drama, and raising three children. I fell in love with Alamos, enchanted by the friendliness of both the Mexican residents and the ex-pat community. I kept returning to visit, especially to enjoy the week long Ortiz Tirado Music Festival held in late January. Before I knew it, I had purchased a small, dilapidated house on a beautiful view lot, and spent the next few years remodeling the casita, building the pool, planting flower and vegetable gardens and finally building and decorating the two story Casa Grande.

I have made many friends in this gracious community and have sponsored Fe y Esperanza, a group of local women who came together to form a non-profit which supports cancer prevention programs for the community and gives assistance to locals who have been diagnosed with cancer.

A number of ex-pat friends had years ago started philanthropic groups. One, Amigos, benefits many children in Alamos by providing resources to buy uniforms and books for families who could not otherwise afford to send their children to school. Another, Comadres, provides help for people who can't afford to buy food or medicine.

Many of us also especially enjoy going to the History Club which meets on Thursday from October through may and discusses highlights of the history of Alamos, of the state of Sonora, and of the country of Mexico.

Elizabeth Packard purchased this estate in 2002

Why Elizabeth Packard chose El Volantín

I had no intention of buying a property in Alamos. We had a condo in Tucson (our home base), and a condo on the beach in San Carlos, Sonora. But I was seduced by the beauty of the views from the property and we could see the potential it had. Also, Iloved the fact that it was just a 10 minute walk to the center of town, the Plaza de

Armas. So, within a few days of seeing it, I had made a deal with the owner, who was now living in Florida, and within a few months I had begun renovating the original little home.

What makes this estate unique

Sitting on the patio of the original casita, in one direction one can see the beautiful dome of the historic church, the crenelated top of the palacio (18th century government building), and the mountains of the Sierra Madres unfolding in the distance. A quarter turn and the peak of 6,000 foot Mt Alamos dominates that view. The property has several very large mesquite trees that attracted birds, and I envisioned flower and vegetable gardens, a large fountain, and a pool to complete the view. A few years later I embarked on building and decorating a second house, and settled in on the second floor while renting out the first floor and the lovingly rehabilitated casita. My guests now love sitting by the pool or on one of the patios, gazing out on the same vistas that enchanted us almost ten years ago. I never tire of watching the ever changing seasonal colors of the hills and mountains, and trying to identify the birds drawn by the fountain, the foliage, the infinity edge pool and splash pool. Tired of relaxing at home? Walk a five minutes down the hill and enjoy a meal at Dona Lola's, our favorite 'neighborhood' Mexican restaurant or go to the five star Hacienda de los Santos resort and restaurant for a fine meal and free musical entertainment.

We have recently hired a bi-lingual long term resident of Alamos to manage our vacation rental when we are not on the premises. Irma will meet and greet guests, provide suggestions on activities, restaurants, services available in Alamos, and is available by phone in the event of questions or concerns. Since Irma is a close neighbor, she is usually available to assist you. We also have a very fine housekeeper who will tidy up your room and do laundry and ironing (for additional pay) should you desire more services. In addition, we have an excellent gardener/grounds supervisor. Should you experience any problems with water, plumbing or electricity, Gilberto is your first line of defense.

Staying at Casa Loma Grande de Guadalupe was a wonderful experience. The accommodations felt grand and stately. All the rooms are spacious, including bathrooms. The beds were comfy and the kitchen was well provisioned. The housekeeper and gardener are very helpful and hard working. The grounds are beautifully landscaped and there are numerous verandas and balconies to hang out on. Communication with the owner was easy and there is also a property manager who checks in with you almost daily. Any problems were quickly addressed. I hope I can stay here again sometime.

Owner's Response: Thanks for your gracious description of Casa Loma and our staff! We all care about the well being of our guests and it is such a pleasure to hear these words and know that you have enjoyed your stay, and that we have made you feel welcome. Of course for guests who are as delightful as your party has been, it is quite easy! We look forward to your return. Elizabeth Packard

The best!

  • 5 of 5

My wife, brother-in-law and I stayed for a few days after a week long trip through Sonora and this is one od the best places we have ever stayed. Beautiful rooms, refreshing pool, and folks who will attend to all your needs. The location was perfect as well, a short walk to downtown Alamos. I can not praise this place enough. Even the dogs are the coolest!

Surpassed our expectations

  • 5 of 5

We travel with our beloved labradors which at times can present a challenge, but during the booking process the owner immediately assured us that they would be welcome. And they were! From the outset we were well cared for, from the driving directions to the welcome from the very capable and friendly staff who were too willing to help with local information. As to the property (we stayed in the casita) the location was perfect as it is set on a hilltop with plenty of tasteful outdoor furnishings and an amazing pool. It is the perfect place to sit and enjoy stunning views while being a very short walk into town and the many excellent restaurants. The casita had everything we needed and more, including an amazing vegetable garden that the guests can use. The only point I can add to this review is that we are already planning to go back.

Owner's Response: We (my staff and I) are so delighted your stay was everything you hoped for. Your dogs were a pleasure to have visit us and Spike, our dog, is mourning your absence. You have taken advantage of the opportunities Alamos has afforded you and both had the opportunity to rest (the pleasure of deeply relaxing is a gift) and also take you own walking tours and go out with friends to encounter the beauties of nature here and explore the countryside. Looking forward to your return!

Mayra y Manuel

Even better than advertised

  • 5 of 5

This review is for the Owner’s Apartment, which is on the second floor of Casa Grande.

Our first impression was stunning. The rooms were larger and the ceilings were higher than they appeared in the photos. The house was tastefully decorated and very well-equipped.

The location was perfect. On a hilltop, we had amazing views from the balconies on three sides of the building. We looked down on Álamos backdropped by mountains to the south, mountains to the west, and the courtyard and fountains to the north.

The property is an easy walk to downtown, to get to restaurants and cafes.

The monthly rent, which includes utilities, is very reasonable considering the elegance and comfort of the apartment.

The grounds are well lit, walled and gated, including the parking area.

There are a good number of cultural activities to participate in weekly, including workshops, independent movies, day trips, fund raisers, cooking, dance and language lessons.

The local rental manager, Irma (who lives next door), is very knowledgeable and she responds to questions and calls for help quickly. The owners provided us with detailed directions for the entire trip…all the way from Tucson to Álamos. Her information about the border crossing was particularly helpful.

I recommend this property very highly

Alamos is a 17th Century Mexican Colonial town in the foothills of the Sierra Madre Mountains. Our home is situated on a hill overlooking the magical pueblo of Alamos, and looking off to the foothills of the Sierras, the vistas extend for hundreds of miles.

Ten minutes' walk down the hill, you will find yourself on the cobblestone streets of the historic Plaza de Armas where you can feast your eyes on buildings exhibiting the classic architecture from Mexico's Colonial period. Restaurants featuring famous Sonoran food await as you stroll the streets and gaze at the restored mansions built hundreds of years ago by the great silver barons who made their fortunes in Alamos and the smaller, nearby town of Aduana.
