About the property

The House Is Located On 3 1/2 Acres On The North Side Of The Chena River.

While the unit is advertised for a number of people, it is great for a couple as well. We bought a two bedroom log cabin in the 60's. In 1974 we built a two story addition to accommodate our six children. At the time we wired and plumbed one bedroom so it could someday be a kitchen. The downstairs of the addition consists of a double garage, sun room and dining room. The upstairs is where guests are welcome. It has four bedrooms, sitting area, kitchen and porch. We have rented it monthly for many years but this time it was vacated we decided to do it as a VRBO. We live in the cabin downstairs.

Also on the property is a cabin that the original owner built for his parents and a barn that we built for our children and converted to a house when they were grown. We did bed and breakfast in them in the 1990's. At the time we registered the name Riverside Retreat. After a few years we decided to rent them on a monthly basis to have more time to play and travel. We can no longer do some of the things we used to do so are doing VRBO in the cabin too. We enjoy marrying people. We also enjoy sharing the space we have taken for granted for so many years. It really is a special spot.

One thing we’ve learned in a year of doing VRBO is to be sure of your arrival and departure information before you reserve our home, Check in is at 3 PM and departure 11 AM unless the house is vacant on either side of your stay. Quite a few guests have had to stay in a hotel for a night because they get in at 1 AM and someone else is in there, or have to leave by 11 when their plane departs at 1 AM, or something like this.

Recently, in our second summer, a guest said someone told her she shouldn’t even come to Fairbanks. Because of this she only booked two nights for her group. They were in the midst of a long road trip. Once here she could see how much there is to do and would have like to stay longer. The next group, also not familiar with Fairbanks, arrived after several days on the road and said they like the house so much they might not even go out. After a good night sleep they did venture out but two days barely lets you get your feet wet--or snowy.

We face South on the North side of the Chena River about two miles from the University of Alaska. Iver Lane ends beside our house on the Chena River. There is a little fire pit on the river which can be used for picnics and duck feeding.

We are close to Creamers Field, Pioneer Park, the Riverboat Discovery, the University of Alaska and their wonderful museum, the auto museum and many other interesting places. Fairbanks is an amazing little town with activities from dog mushing to theater. The aurora is often visible in winter. In summer there is near total daylight. Chena Hot Springs is a wonderful day trip.

We have lived here since 1966. It was originally a two bedroom log cabin. We had six children so built a two story addition. The downstairs of the addition has a double garage, sun room and dining room. The upstairs has four bedrooms, bathroom, a kitchen and sitting area. This is the area where we welcome visitors to stay. We still live downstairs.

As the pictures show, this wouldn't be desirable for people opposed to hunting. Bob has enjoyed hunting his whole life. Mardee was raised on Bambi and not excited about it. However, she had done some shooting in high school and killed one moose and two bears on three shots to show she could. Then she resigned.

We have a large garden that the local first graders have picked each fall for the last 16 years. Visitors are welcome to 'eat from it' in season. Many ducks live on the river and love to be fed. There is a fence along the river in front of the house but there are two openings to the river. Children aren't allowed to go to the river without an adult unless they are good swimmers.

The Summer Art Festival has been going on for over twenty five years. Each March Ice Alaska has attracted people from around the world. This year we have the Arctic Winter Games.

A word of warning, we came to Fairbanks in 1962 for 18 months and haven't left yet!
