Escape to a unique gem nestled in the forest overlooking the Sandy River, perfect for a romantic getaway. Built by two Alaskan prospectors in the 1920s, the main cabin is the only cordwood cabin on Mt. Hood. This construction uses log slices in its walls, giving Little Yew Lodge its endearing polka dot exterior. Rough-hewn timber beams and an original handbuilt fireplace maintain its historical allure, while the décor is updated with a vintage/modern sensibility.
*Note: one night stays are allowed when reserving within a 1 week window or when only a one night stay is available (i.e. when the surrounding nights are already booked).
Enjoy drinks on the deck or around the firepit, both overlooking the river and surrounded by 100-year old Doug Fir, Cedar and Yew trees. A charcoal grill and picnic table allow for al fresco meals accompanied by the sound of rushing water.
Once inside, you’ll want to cozy up on the Chesterfield in front of the fireplace, assembled by hand with local river rock. The names of the two prospectors who first warmed themselves by this beauty, Bob and Brian, are carved into the mortar. Play a record from a varied collection that includes jazz, classical, 80’s and afrobeat. The armoire holds games from Jenga to Settlers of Catan.
Climb the handcarved wooden staircase to the loft where you’ll find a 37” flat screen TV set up to stream movies, news, sports, etc. via Roku, an HD DVD player, movies, and books. A queen bed serves as additional sleeping or just more area on which to lounge.
Though there are many restaurants nearby, the kitchen is stocked for cabin-cooked meals. You’ll enjoy the use of All-Clad and cast iron pots and pans, Wusthof knives, spices/sugar, and extras such as the:
fondue pot,
crockpot,
KitchenAid mixer,
dutch oven,
onion soup bowls,
roasting pan,
bakeware, and more.
Coffee lovers you can start your day using the espresso machine, french press or classic drip. Complimentary roasted coffee beans and a selection of teas are provided.
Eventually it’s time to retire to the adjacent cottage where you’ll find the bathroom, featuring a rainfall shower head, and the plush nest of your bedroom. The queen bed, with memory foam topper and Hungarian goose down comforter, ensures an indulgent night’s rest.
All of Mt. Hood’s attractions are close by – summer and fall guests can embark on classic hikes, kayak and visit innumerable fishing spots. Winter and spring guests are a quick drive to ski resorts (15 mins to Ski Bowl; 35 mins to Mt. Hood Meadows).
Extra notes:
Dogs are welcomed with an additional $10 nightly fee (capped at $20).
Firewood is provided.
Down-alternative bedding is available for guests with allergies.
A required 7% county/state sales tax will be added to all reservations.
While an inveterate traveler, having visited 6 of the 7 continents, I'm also deeply devoted to the Pacific Northwest. Owning a cabin on Mt. Hood as a getaway has been a dream. I'm excited to share it with others who seek the same type of refuge.
Rebecca Shoon purchased this cabin in 2013
I feel a strong connection to the Mt. Hood area, as I know many in our region do. I've summited the mountain and snowboarded down its slopes innumerable times. I hike its trails in the summer and cross country ski through the forests in the winter. It's amazing to be able to drive just an hour from Portland, yet experience the relaxation and adventure that comes from truly 'getting away'.
I searched for just the right property that would have a heavy dose of historic charm, while offering a modern, comfortable experience. The sound of the river that greets you as you emerge from your car is the perfect welcome to a space that invites relaxation.
The unique details of this cabin are endless, from the handbuilt fireplace to the woodland-themed tiling in the kitchen and bathroom. The location is secluded and private, while still convenient to Hwy 26.
The sound of the river is magical & romantic. The tidiness of the yew lodge & side cottage made me feel charmed & at ease. These hosts are off property and anticipate all of your needs, make you feel welcome in their space. It felt like my own home! Cozy beds. Fireplace. Dreamy kitchen. Stellar record collection. Open windows & views. A breeze to Mt Hood. Didn’t want to leave! Will return. Thank you Yew Lodge!
This property is absolutely amazing! We loved the owners attention to detail, they have clearly thought of everything. The beauty of the river and the cabin make this one of the best places we have ever stayed. My family were here from Australia and had their breath taken away when we arrived at the cabin - as did my husband and I. A short beautiful drive to the ski bowl, enjoyed a fire, while records were playing in the background and woke up to the sound of the river rushing. We highly recommend this property, and will book again.
Everything was perfect from the location to the stocked kitchen to the amazing beds to the vinyl record collection! Will be back!!
A lovely cabin in a beautiful location with responsive and helpful hosts.
We loved this cozy cabin. Great location near skiing locations yet still a remote place to relax.
We’ve stayed at the Little Yew Lodge several times and each time is better. Such a great spot, beautiful old school cabin, with all you need for a relaxing weekend.
