Tucked away at the bottom of a quiet plot on the southern peninsula of Falmouth Harbour, The Jelly Nut has uninterrupted waterfront views from its little cliff, looking back towards the bay, beaches, and marinas of Falmouth.
The cottage is away from the road, reached by a stepping stone path, down the hill, and through a verdant tropical garden.
The “Jelly Nut,” which means, “young coconut,” is an oasis of peace and tranquility…the only sounds you will hear are the songs of the native birds, the breezes rustling through the palms and the waves lapping at the base of the property.
Mounting the wooden steps to the main level, you access the “Gallery,” or veranda, which is where you will spend most of your time. There is an alfresco dining table with 4 chairs, and a cozy living area at the far end, with wicker furniture and a charcoal barbeque. Relax out here with your morning coffee, and watch the family of pelicans diving, the small sailing boats racing, and the beautiful super yachts moving by in an endless spectacle of gleaming luxury. Have a sundowner or two and watch the colors change to pink and purple, then dark blue and inky black with many stars…then eat a private dinner in the sheltered dining area, listening to your own tunes or just the music of the wind and water.
The comfortable and colorful living and kitchen area is open to the view, looking out onto the Gallery. There are two day-bed sofas with drawers for storage below, which can be used for sleeping extra guests or just for sitting inside. The room is decorated with vibrant Caribbean “Madras” plaid pillows and a selection of local artwork. For entertainment, there is a large, flat screen TV with built-in DVD player and satellite TV stations, and an ipod dock. Wifi access is also provided.
The small kitchen is fully equipped and includes a gas stove, microwave, rice maker, electric coffee & tea making facilities, and a large refrigerator with plenty of freezer space.
There is also a full bathroom on this level, with a toilet, sink & cheerful shower, whose window gets a peep of the sea through the calabash tree. There are 100% cotton sheets and towels in this bathroom for those who wish to sleep in the living area.
Downstairs is a separate double bedroom with a mosquito net, 100% cotton sheets and good quality pillows. There is a tall closet and chest of drawers for your belongings. This bedroom also has a small, en-suite bathroom with toilet, sink & shower, once again offering that peep of the sea under the calabash tree. The view from the door is of the water, the waves, and a giant seagrape tree. The lightning-fast hummingbirds come to drink at the flowers in the garden during the day, and the lizards will be sunning themselves on the wall.
Note: because this peninsula is perfectly situated to catch the trade winds, the mosquitos are much less troublesome out here!
The large cistern under the house is the main source of water, and although the house is also hooked up to mains, the rainwater is soft and refreshing after a good sleep or a day on the beach. The water is heated with solar panels on the roof, for an extra eco-friendly touch.
A 10 minute drive down the hill brings you to the first of the grocery stores, as well as bars, restaurants, and a marina, from which you can hire a deep sea fishing boat. A further 5 minutes, and you are in the bustling town of Falmouth, where there are two more supermarkets, lots of restaurants and bars, a doctor’s office, car rental, shops and art galleries, marinas, and dive centers.
A few minutes further, and you will come to the historic English Harbour, which is home to Nelson’s Dockyard. Stroll about the historic buildings, stop in at the Museum, and have a pasty at the Dockyard Bakery while you are picking up a loaf of the local bread for your cottage! Once again, this area is home to shopping, a supermarket, night club, car rental, and several very good quality restaurants. They say there are 365 beaches in Antigua, and there are several that are within 15 minutes of The Jelly Nut. There are several on the peninsula, and one that can be seen from the house on the harbor side. Across the bay is Pigeon Beach, which has beautifully clear water, sugar-white sand, and a great vibe. Parking is free just in front of the beach, and there are two restaurants with bars that serve the area. A few minutes’ walk from Pigeon is Windward Beach, a little more quiet, and you can drive or get a water taxi over to Galleon Beach, which is a crescent of white sand, looking out of the mouth of the harbor and back towards the historical buildings.
You will need a car for The Jelly Nut, and there is parking at the top of the hill for 2 vehicles. Car Rental can be arranged through the property manager, she will get you the best deal! We do recommend hiring one of the local taxis for any trips involving alcohol, though, and the taxi drivers are wonderful sources of information.
A weekly maid service is included in the price. If you would like additional service, or a chef for a private, local-style meal, please ask!
You may get a visit from one of the neighbors...the Property Manager’s house is next door, and Tina has a very friendly little dog & cat, who just might come say hello and welcome you to The Jelly Nut!
only a 10 minute drive from the bustle of Falmouth and English Harbours, the house is breezy and beautifully quiet...a perfect place to relax
