About this property

Good Bear Ranch House Retreat. Host a Family Reunion or a Refreshing Retreat

This, one of a kind, rustic log home tucked into the base of the Elkhorn Mountains is anything but rustic when it comes to amenities. It is a large (5200 Sq. Ft.) home located on 250 acres bordered by Wallowa Whitman National Forest. There is scenery, hiking, snowshoeing, wildlife and big starry skies right out the backdoor. You are within minutes of The Elkhorn Crest Trail and many Wilderness access options. Anthony Lakes ski area is 19 miles away. It is a 10 mile trip into Historic Baker City.
Please be aware that this is a "country experience". This means that there is more dust, especially after a hot, dry summer. There are also flies that migrate into the house during warm days accompanied by cold fall nights. This lasts for 3-4 weeks from late September until mid to late October. They are harmless but admittedly annoying. If this is a concern for you then please check with me before renting during this time of the year.
Seven plus bedrooms and four baths accommodate up to 16 people. Air mattresses are available for overflow. It is a perfect spot for a group retreat or workshop. The main living areas are well suited to meetings or workshops in a relaxed, elegant setting. WiFi access lets everyone stay in touch with customers while enjoying a few days of team building. Please note that wifi is Satellite which means 3-4 average users but not high performance as one might want for multible video game streamers.

Behind the house there is a grassy, wooded area with a large fire pit, water access and picnic table. Make smores, tell stories or simply listen to the elk bugling across the meadow. The house has a large wrap around deck, including a furnished, covered area (we lounge over coffee and breakfast here in warm weather) near the kitchen/main entry.

The house was built in 1979 with large diameter, hand hewn spruce logs. We recently completed a three year renovation project that provides top quality finish materials and modern amenities. The casual but elegant feel of the house is accentuated by hardwood floors, granite countertops, oriental carpets, chrystal chandeliers, antique furniture, leather couches original artwork and fine bedding. It has a gourmet kitchen (farm sink, professional, dual fuel range) capable of feeding a crowd. Two massive floor to ceiling stone fireplaces grace the main living areas, both upstairs and down. There are spectacular views out every window.

There are two open loft bedrooms. One with two twin beds and one with a queen bed. There is a catwalk between bedrooms overlooking the living room. The privacy is a bit limited here but the charm is not.

The main floor hosts a large entry way for depositing all of your outdoor gear, aforementioned kitchen with counter seating for 8-10, dining room with seating at the large table for up to 14 and a comfy conversation area of leather sofa and chairs, an additional sitting room with sofa, four comfy chairs and TV/DVD, small bath with toilet, shower and sink, large 'spa' bath with jetted tub and two sinks, small sun room perfect for a temporary bedroom or warming up on a winter day. Most of the main floor has high vaulted ceilings of knotty pine tongue and groove planks. For those requiring a main floor (No Stairs) bedroom option, the sitting room can be closed off with curtains and the hideaway queen sofa bed can be set up.

Downstairs are five more bedrooms, two bathrooms and an expansive game room. The master bedroom (Pineberry)has a queen bed, pull out queen couch and TV/DVD. The master bath has a toilet, shower and two sinks. The pink (Ladyslipper)room has a queen bed, large closet and child's pop up, portable 'crib'. The (Cedarberry)room has a queen bed and large closet. The blue (Huckleberry)has a double bed. The yellow (Sunburst)has a double bed. The game room has a pool/ping pong table, foosball table, TV/DVD/Wii and access to high speed network. Please note that the Blue Room is in a corner location reachable through either the Cedarberry or Sundburst rooms. It does not have direct access.

Overdue Family Reunion
Our family gathered at Good Bear for a long, overdue reunion. The home and surrounding area was beautiful and provided for plenty of space along with a very well appointed kitchen. Access to Anthony Lakes and the discount tickets for skiing along with access to nearby trails made for a great outings. We also enjoyed watching the large herd of elk make their daily trek to grazing grounds below. We all loved this place and left with many nice memories and promises to return. Thank you for making such a great place available.

Anthony Lakes/ Good Bear Ranch DH/XC
Our group of 11 ladies ages 69-88 had an great stay at GBR. The location is close to the ski hill and Baker City. The discounted ski tickets were a plus. Accommodations were perfect however the Family Room still has a lumpy mattress but we managed. Lots of options with air mattresses or cots.

Good Bear is terrific
We recently had a small get together with a few family members we had not seen in 14 years. The accommodations at BG were perfect for our small group. We had plenty of room for privacy as well as visiting in lovely, comfortable surroundings. The weather provided serious heat, some smoke, then rain, so we did not take much advantage of the outdoor seating accommodations. Two suggestions: (1) We could not find a fire extinguisher in the kitchen. Fortunately we didn't need it, but the one we eventually discovered near the downstairs fireplace would not have been available in the event of an emergency. We'd suggest more and more prominent fire extinguishers and/or fire blankets. (2) Idiot-proof directions for the entertainment center would have been much appreciated. We had to spend waaaaaay too much time figuring things out to play videos and/or watch a movie. And, sadly, missed the Women's World Cup final due to inability to determine how to get reception. Otherwise, we LOVED our visit to GB, and would recommend it to others. Thanks, Robin, for sharing this lovely place (and your amazing landscaping).

Fantanstic stay!
The lodge was great and the views from the deck fantastic...we loved it. The only issue we had was the representation of bedrooms and baths. The corner 3 bedrooms ran together which created a small issue for two families and the baths were misrepresented, in actuality, there are only 6 bedrooms and three baths. Other than that, it was a fantastic stay and we will probably rebook in the future. Thank you.

Wonderful weekend of family connectedness!
This property was absolutely perfect for our small family reunion. The setting is idyllic, the log home is gorgeous, and the kitchen was well stocked. What a perfect place for sharing meals, visits, and relaxed time together as an extended family. Thank you for the privilege!

My parents bought this property in the 1960's and I inherited it from them in 2005. I lived there as a young girl and spent most of my days outside, exploring the fields and forests, riding horses, tending to my 4-H projects or 'helping' my dad with ranch chores. At University of Washington I majored in Forestry and spent summers working for the Forest Service. After college I spent the next 20 years working in sales positions for large corporations such as GE, Caterpillar Tractor, Digital Equipment Corp. and Xerox. I traveled extensively but always wished to return to the West that I loved. I was finally able to with a move to Boise ID in 1990. I have been in Boise since then and travel regularly to our ranch property in Baker City. I now have a family in Boise that consists of myself, my husband, Ray, two daughters, two stepchildren and their spouses and five grand children. We spend many long weekends at Good Bear Ranch, sledding, snowshoeing, hiking and cooking fun family meals. I am an artist in progress and derive most of my inspiration from photos taken on the ranch property. I am currently working on a series of large wildflower paintings called 'Rocky Mountain Treasure'.

Why they chose this property

This property has been in my family since I was 5 years old. We lived, and operated a cattle ranch there during the 1960's. In later years we used the property as a family summer home and then my parents retired there in 1978. The log home was built in 1979 by master crafter Don Dickerson and his wife 'Dort'.

What makes this property unique

Large indoor and outdoor spaces for groups to meet. upscale surroundings indoor coupled with wilderness access. Kid and dog friendly with extra amenities for both.
