About the property

We are best suited to groups of 30 people or less looking for quiet camaraderie

This, one of a kind, rustic log home tucked into the base of the Elkhorn Mountains is anything but rustic when it comes to amenities. It is a large (5200 Sq. Ft.) home located on 250 acres bordered by Wallowa Whitman National Forest. There is scenery, hiking, snowshoeing, and wildlife right out the backdoor. You are with in minutes of The Elkhorn Trail and many Wilderness access options. Anthony Lakes ski area is 45 minutes away. It is a 12 mile trip into Historic Baker City.

Seven bedrooms and four baths accommodate up to 14 people. Air mattresses or tent camping allows for more guests. It is a perfect spot for a group retreat or workshop. The main living areas are well suited to meetings or workshops in a relaxed, elegant setting. WiFi access lets everyone stay in touch with customers while enjoying a few days of team building.

Behind the house there is a grassy, wooded area with a large fire pit, water access and picnic table. Make smores, tell stories or simply listen to the elk bugling across the meadow. The house has a large wrap around deck, including a furnished, covered area (we lounge over coffee and breakfast here in warm weather) near the kitchen/main entry.

The house was built in 1979 with large diameter, hand hewn spruce logs. We recently completed a three year renovation project that provides top quality finish materials and modern amenities. The casual but elegant feel of the house is accentuated by hardwood floors, granite countertops, oriental carpets, chrystal chandeliers, antique furniture, leather couches original artwork and fine bedding. It has a gourmet kitchen (farm sink, professional, dual fuel range) capable of feeding a crowd. Two massive floor to ceiling stone fireplaces grace the main living areas, both upstairs and down. There are spectacular views out every window.

There are two open loft bedrooms. One with two twin beds and one with a queen bed. There is a catwalk between bedrooms overlooking the living room.

The main floor hosts a large entry way for depositing all of your outdoor gear, aforementioned kitchen with counter seating for 8-10, dining room with seating at the large table for up to 14 and a comfy conversation area of leather sofa and chairs, an additional sitting room with sofa, four comfy chairs and TV/DVD, small bath with toilet, shower and sink, large 'spa' bath with jetted tub and two sinks, small sun room perfect for a temporary bedroom or warming up on a winter day. Most of the main floor has high vaulted ceilings of knotty pine tongue and groove planks.

Downstairs are five more bedrooms, two bathrooms and an expansive game room. The master bedroom has a queen bed, pull out queen couch and TV/DVD. The master bath has a toilet, shower and two sinks. The 'Pink' room has a queen bed, large closet and child's pop up, portable 'crib'. The 'Cedar' room has a queen bed and large closet. The 'Blue Room' has a double bed. The 'Yellow Room' has a double bed. The game room has a pool/ping pong table, foosball table, TV/DVD/Wii and access to high speed network.

About Robin Coen

My parents bought this property in the 1960's and I inherited it from them in 2005. I lived there as a young girl and spent most of my days outside, exploring the fields and forests, riding horses, tending to my 4-H projects or 'helping' my dad with ranch chores. At University of Washington I majored in Forestry and spent summers working for the Forest Service. After college I spent the next 20 years working in sales positions for large corporations such as GE, Caterpillar Tractor, Digital Equipment Corp. and Xerox. I traveled extensively but always wished to return to the West that I loved. I was finally able to with a move to Boise ID in 1990. I have been in Boise since then and travel regularly to our ranch property in Baker City. I now have a family in Boise that consists of myself, my husband, Ray, two daughters, two stepchildren and their spouses and five grand children. We spend many long weekends at Good Bear Ranch, sledding, snowshoeing, hiking and cooking fun family meals. I am an artist in progress and derive most of my inspiration from photos taken on the ranch property. I am currently working on a series of large wildflower paintings called 'Rocky Mountain Treasure'.

Robin Coen purchased this chateau / country house in 1962

Why Robin Coen chose Baker City

This property has been in my family since I was 5 years old. We lived, and operated a cattle ranch there during the 1960's. In later years we used the property as a family summer home and then my parents retired there in 1978. The log home was built in 1979 by master crafter Don Dickerson and his wife 'Dort'.

What makes this chateau / country house unique

Large indoor spaces for groups to meet, Very upscale surroundings indoor coupled with wilderness access. Kid and dog friendly with extra amenities for both.

LOVED this place!

  • 5 of 5

A group of six of us stayed in this lovely property, to use as a base camp for several days of motorcycle adventures around the area. Robin could not have been a more gracious and communicative host, and the house is unbelievable. Huge, extremely comfortable, with all of the accommodations and amenities advertised and more. Tons of deer and elk around to view and appreciate from the deck, a wonderful kitchen, comfortable beds... I could go on and on. Really grateful we got the opportunity to stay here, and I highly recommend this place for others.

Good Bear Ranch never dissapoints

  • 5 of 5

We have customers come in and stay here for a winter trip we take every year. It's the perfect location to hang out, play games, cook, and relax. We have had nothing but great interactions with the owner and will absolutely be returning to Good Bear. Thanks again for having us!

We were a ski group of 13 - the kitchen was much loved by all. Wish we had better snow - but that is the way it goes.
