A real heritage opportunity where you can stay in the oldest house in Strathcona County. This is your chance to experience an early pioneer home without sacrificing modern amenities. While maintaining the original character of the loghouse, newer additions have included a full kitchen, heated floors, bathroom and laundry facilities. In addition to the loghouse, the property also features many historical items including an old bunkhouse, a Swiss-style logbarn, antique farm machinery and an old boat once used for a tourist camp on Cooking Lake in the 1930's. Kilometres of trails throughout the property introduce you to the native flora and fauna in this area. As a wildlife preserve, the property has been maintained in its natural state. Situated on the shores of Hastings Lake, there is access for canoe and kayak enthusiasts. A day paddling on the lake will take you to the many islands of Hastings Lake. Our property also boasts a 70 acre Ducks Unlimited Conservation Area. If you are a bird-watching enthusiast or just looking to enjoy nature, this is the place for you. We offer tranquillity in a natural setting all within a short 35 minute drive to the city of Edmonton.
You will enjoy the full-use and privacy of this heritage loghome with your hosts only a short 10 minute walk away along a forest trail. We are there when you need us but happy to allow you to enjoy your time away on your own in peace and quiet.
I enjoy spending time in the outdoors including hiking, biking and horseback riding. Following an Honours degree in History from Queen's University and a Masters in Information Science from the University of Western Ontario, I have enjoyed a career in museum management. Personally, my husband and I have owned historical properties that we have strived to restore back to their original character. We love to travel, explore new places and meet new people. Fulfilling one of our goals, over the years we have taken our four children on camping trips across Canada travelling as far north, west, south and east as possible within Canada in a truck with an old canvas tent. We loved our journeys together as a family and we look forward to meeting you and hearing about your journeys.
Martha Rutherford Conrad purchased this chateau / country house in 2013
Maggie's Hill Heritage Loghouse is a special property that immediately appealed to my husband and I. It is the oldest property in Strathcona County and was settled by one of the first Metis settlers in this area. When his daughter (Maggie) married a Scottish railway man, he gifted the loghouse to them as a wedding gift. Together Maggie and John raised 9 children in a 600 sq. foot loghouse. Sitting on a hill overlooking Hastings Lake, the property soon became known as Maggie's Hill. It is a privilege for my husband and I to become the lastest stewards of this treasured historic site.
The property is resplendent with details that depict the early pioneer heritage in Strathcona County from fencing styles, shingles, and architectural details. The property also boasts a 70 acre Ducks Unlimited Conservation Area with an opportunity to view a wide variety of birds and waterfowl including teal ducks, wood ducks, pelican, goshawks and great horned owls.
The cabin is located half hour from Edmonton in case that you miss the big city fun. It has heated floors throughout, a fully and modern equipped kitchen, a lovely wood fire stove and it is full of well selected antique pieces. The mattresses both on the single bed and the queen size are tempurpedic - so very comfortable for all kinds of preferences. We will return for the Fall season and colors. It is without a doubt one of the best cabins that we have ever stayed in.
We've stayed here several time and love the peace and quiet. It's beautiful in the winter, and great for cross country skiing or snowshoeing.
This is our third visit. We love the peaceful interaction with our surroundings.
Totally charming cabin, we used the well equipped kitchen for every meal.. everything you need is there. It's the kind of place where you can park the car for days, and just stay put in your pajamas all day ...but we got dressed in winter clothes and put on snowshoes (we brought along) and traipsed around 160 acres of property in forested and open grasslands for good exercise on fresh snow. Lots of interesting book choices on shelves and we discovered one about the Waskahegan Trail (wiki it!) which we learned runs through the property and is flagged, so we ventured out and found the Two Stones fence stile (POI on the trail). Sky is black dark at night, bring your telescope (or good binoculars) on a clear night the star gazing would be awesome. We are looking for an excuse to go back again!
I loved spending the weekend here with some friends! Being able to relax in a beautiful cabin was the perfect way to leave our city troubles behind. The wood stove to keep warm at night was the perfect touch. Can’t wait to come back!
We had the most beautiful time celebrating our wedding at Meggie's Hill. This is an intimate location with a rustic feel. Just perfect!
This rolling landscape in eastern Strathcona County is called the Land of Lakes for good reason. Populated with many lakes, we are situated on one of the most eastern of them called Hastings Lake. Renowned as a bird sanctuary, Hastings Lake is a treasure trove for bird watchers. Maggie's Hill is home to many species of birds including teal ducks, wood ducks, pelicans, bald eagles, ruffed grouse, goshawk and great horned owls. Wildlife is plentiful on the ranch with the opportunity to view moose, deer, coyote, muskrats, beavers, bobcat and even the rare wolf.
Maggie's Hill Heritage Loghouse is close to premier attractions including Elk Island National Park, Ukranian Heritage Village and Blackfoot Cooking Lake Conservation Area. Sherwood Park provides many amenities including shopping, theatre, public library, recreational facilities, restaurants and a farmers market. Within 45 minutes you are on Whyte Avenue in Edmonton with its theatres, festivals, boutique shops and diverse culinary experiences.
