About the property

Lake front property - 2 Bedrooms, 1 Bath, Sleeps 4 comfortably; canoe or kayak

This modest, yet cozy, white cottage sits atop a slight hill overlooking scenic, but small, Lac Guilbeault. There is a private dock and boat for use (choice of canoe or kayak) with full water access. This cottage is located directly off of Chemin Pont-Briand, 7kms west of Lac des Loups and a 20 minute drive from Wakefield. The large rear deck overlooking the lake is perfect for BBQs and sunny afternoon entertainment. Private fire-pit is also provided (fire-wood not provided). Swimming is ideal from a large private swimming raft anchored a short boat float away in the middle of the lake. There is also access to a 6.5km hiking trail which wanders through wet land, temperate forests and high oak savannah. For those interested, there is also a canoe portage trail which meanders through marsh land and beaver ponds. Water for washing, dishes, etc. is sourced directly from the lake and is not drinkable so, a 5 gallon container of drinking water is supplied and replenished as needed. Clean linens and towels provided. Limited wifi available.

About David Clendining

I am an artist and love the beauty of my surroundings. I moved into the Gatineau Hills just north of Ottawa over 20 years ago because this area is a natural paradise.

David Clendining purchased this chalet in 2010

Why David Clendining chose La Pêche

The White Cottage is located on a small nearly private lake surrounded by forest of the spectacular Gatineau Hills 20 minutes from National Gatineau Park. I first found Lac Guilbeault over 20 years ago and bought a property upon which I built my hand made house. Later another property came up for sale so I bought that one too and built a large studio on it. Since then two other cottages came up for sale so I bought them as well. The White Cottage is quaint and has a spectacular view of the lake. This is by far the best view and is perfect for that end of the day, sitting on the deck watching the sun set.

What makes this chalet unique

After I finished renovating the White Cottage I also built a 6.5 km. hiking trail all around the lake and through the forest. The trail can be reached in the canoe which comes with the cottage. The lake is deep and perfect for swimming from a raft anchored in the middle of the lake. This too is a perfect place for the kids or just relaxing in the sun surrounded by natural beauty of the hills

Peaceful Water Front says it best!

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is as described - small, quaint, minimalist and rustic - and that is just what we were looking for.

I spent the first half of the week enjoying some alone time and getting some work done up there with my dog. My girlfriend joined me on the latter half for a couple's getaway. The cottage and surroundings were perfectly suited for both.

It is very quite quiet there, aside from the occasional road traffic. The road is within 5 meters of the cottage, and while the sound wall seems to work well (I'm a light sleeper and had no issues), I would be mindful of the proximity to the road when deciding if your dog should come (mine did well).

There are some interesting trails on the other side of the lake, my dog had the time of his life on them.

It can often feel like you have the this entire tiny yet beautiful lake all to yourself. It was a real pleasure to meet both David and Kerry, they are genuinely friendly people and great responsive hosts.

We explore different cottage options quite frequently these days and with this one I can say that I truly look forward to visiting again some time soon - it was just what we were looking for.

Had a great time. The weather did not co-operate but enjoyed the break from the city.

Rustic, peaceful

  • 4 of 5

Rustic nothing fancy , a nice getaway right on a small lake. Lots of wild life for wild life lovers, the high light of our trip was the hummingbirds that were feeding on the hummingbird feeders we provided, they arrived everyday to feed and were a great source of entertainment and enjoyment for us..

City escape

  • 4 of 5

We really enjoyed feeling like we were the only ones on the lake. So many dragonflies, it was amazing watching them in the evenings.

This is a rustic cottage, we knew we were in for an adventure when we got there. A frog was sitting in the kayak waiting to join us for a trip.

Clean lake water, nice trail to go for a walk, nature at its best. The kids enjoyed looking for frogs and turtles.

There were quite a few deer flies which made evenings by the fire a bit frustrating but that is all a part of nature...

We enjoyed meeting the owner, who showed us the trail, and made us a map, and told us where to get some water, and the nearest grocery store. Very helpful.

family vacation

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time with our 3 kids (4, 7 & 9 years old). The cottage was rustic enough to feel like an adventure, but had all we needed for a comfortable week.

The lake was a perfect size to paddle around. The swimming dock was wonderful and the hiking trails perfect for the little guy.

We enjoyed a day trip to the beach at lac Philippe, and a morning in Wakefield.

Nice to have met the owner, who directed us to a beautiful spot to get fresh drinking water.

Great trip. The kids want to go back already!

Owner's Response: Linda and her family are very friendly and polite. I was so happy to see that they took full advantage of all the fun things to do around the lake and area. They also left the cottage in excellent condition after they left. I hope to see you here again next summer. I'm glad you all had such a great time! Thank you

Great trip

  • 5 of 5

Stayed for 4 nights and would go back. Overall, I would give it 4.5 star. There is now a high wooden fence to block some of the noise from the gravel road and also to give more privacy. The trip was for my birthday and the owner David left me a note saying happy birthday with the welcome package, making the trip special from the moment we walked in. The cottage is cozy, rustic/antique themed, fully furnished + extras (board games, books, VCR for those of us who remember), which I appreciated. Canoe and kayak access come with the cottage, and the owner was nice to enough to spare some firewood from his place as it was chilly at night time during our stay. The lake is beautiful, especially at sunset. It's quiet and secluded, so it felt like a real getaway although we only drove less than 3 hours from home. No cell reception and limited wifi was kind of nice for me but not for my boyfriend, thus the 4.5 star rather than a full 5.

Owner's Response: Hi Jieun, It was so nice to meet you and your boyfriend. Both Kerry and I really enjoyed it when you popped over for a visit. I'm so glad you celebrated your birthday here. It was nice to be a small part of that, Yea, I know the wifi is a bit sketchy. The wind blowing the trees can interrupt the signal. We country dwellers just assume that sort of thing but I do understand that it is not as reliable as in more densely populated areas. Thank you so much for the great clean up job you both did before leaving. I sure hope to see you again. David

This rustic cottage is located deep in the Gatineau Hills on a small, nearly private lake surrounded by forests and steep wilderness hills which include a 6.5 km hiking trail. There is good fishing, canoeing, and swimming as well as excellent hunting, when in season. This is a modest but comfortable cottage immediately off Chemin Pont-Briand, 7 kms west of Lac Des Loups, with a beautiful rear deck view overlooking the lake and forest. Minimum of two nights stay.
