Built for the Culp heirs (1892), this historic colonial style two story brick home is located across from the prestigious Gas Light Inn Bed and Breakfast and the GAR (Grand Army of the Republic) building in the Old Town District of historic Gettysburg. Guests of the B. Catherine Culp House are within one block (an easy walk) of the center of Gettysburg and attractions such as the Wills House and the Lincoln Train Station as well as fine dining and shopping. The Freedom Transit Trolley is available half-a-block from the house and provides, free of charge, a quick and easy transportation option to the Gettysburg Visitors Center, museums and other points of interest including the battlefield, Gettysburg College and Lutheran Theological Seminary. Nicely furnished with a touch of the Victorian Era, this three bedroom, one full and one half bath home sleeps six people (or up to eight people with the use of a sleep sofa in the living room) and has private off street parking for two vehicles. The kitchen has been recently updated to a vintage modern style and is a real 'cook's kitchen' for those who enjoy preparing and serving meals. After a long day of sightseeing, guests of the B. Catherine Culp House have the option of sitting and relaxing on either the beautifully restored covered front porch or the covered back porch; or perhaps choosing instead to enjoy an evening refreshment in the private, nicely landscaped backyard.
Lawrence and Wendy Shrader are the owners of the B. Catherine Culp House as well as Willow Lodge at Primrose Dale Farm. Both are natives of Adams County. Wendy was born and raised in Gettysburg and Lawrence in Littlestown.
Larry and Wendy Shrader purchased this house in 2013
When this historic home came on the market in 2013, Lawrence and Wendy fell in love with the charm and character of the house as well as the historic significance of the property. According to the September 6, 1892 edition of the Gettysburg Compiler, 'Contractor Joseph J. Smith is building a two story brick residence for the Culp heirs near the Methodist Episcopal Church'. This reference confirms the evidence from the Sanborne Fire Insurance Maps which reflects a two story brick structure being erected between October 1891-October 1896. Further research revealed the owner was Barbara Catherine Culp who was a cousin of John Wesley Culp. John Wesley Culp died on his family's property (Uncle Henry Culp's farm) on July 3, 1863, while fighting with the Confederacy at Culp's Hill during the Battle of Gettysburg. Lawrence and Wendy quickly realized that the home and location were superb for providing visitors to Gettysburg a real authentic taste of this historic era.
The owners of the B. Catherine Culp House have meticulously searched and selected period furnishings to place throughout the house providing for their guests not only a feel for the Victorian era of the late 1800's but also for the kind of items and decor that Catherine Culp may have had in her home at the time. So those coming to Gettysburg desiring to learn about and experience the history that was made here will enjoy coming 'home' to a place that will continue to envelop them in that history while at the same time providing all the modern conveniences and comforts that they have become accustomed to and expect. The house also provides a wonderful atmosphere for visitors to celebrate gatherings of all kinds whether it be family or classmate reunions, or holiday get togethers. Prepare a Thanksgiving dinner in the beautiful 'chef's kitchen' and enjoy serving it in the nicely decorated Victorian dining room; or create a special memory by celebrating Christmas vacation, Victorian style. Stay and watch the fireworks on New Year's Eve from the privacy of the backyard as they are displayed in the sky above Lincoln Square in the center of historic Gettysburg. The location of the house is superb. Special event parades such as Remembrance Day may be observed from the comfort of the front porch as the house is located on some parade routes. Guests can walk to area attractions, restaurants, and shopping or may elect to ride the free trolley which picks up and drops off practically at the doorstep. The B. Catherine Culp House provides a central location to launch trips to other area attractions: Hershey Park, 50 miles from the house, Lancaster Amish Country, 78 miles, Ski Liberty Mountain Resort, 10 miles, The Links at Gettysburg, 9 miles. Quaint and charming colonial look on the outside and a lot of period character on the inside, the B. Catherine Culp House is the place to stay while visiting Gettysburg & south central Pennsylvania.
This was our first time in Gettysburg. We loved this wonderful town and the amazing B.Catherine Culp House. This homes in the heart of downtown and very close to the battleground and veterens cemetery and the visitors center. The stores and restaurants are very nice.Gettysburg has the most history of anywhere that we have ever been. Our house was beautiful and owner Wendy was super.I would go back again and highly recommend this home to everyone.
Took the kids to explore Gettysburg, could not have asked for a better place to stay! We loved sitting on the back porch with our coffee and being so close to the center of town. Beautiful house and great location.
This was a great choice for us. The location is good, the house was clean and very functional. We had plenty of privacy and found all the systems and appliances up to date. We plan on returning.
Home was lovely. Right in the middle of town and close to Gettysburg College. Some outside noise is unavoidable. Great shower! Easy parking.
This home was exactly what we thought we'd be getting, and we couldn't have been happier! We spent the evening in on Friday night and the kitchen and back porch was the perfect area to have some wine and chit-chat. The places we particularly wanted to see- the Dobbin House, Gettysburg Ghost Tours, O'Rourke's, and the town square- on Saturday were all within about a 10-15 minute walk. We enjoyed being able to go in and out as we pleased because the location was so close to the main drag. We also took the opportunity to jump in our car and drive down to some major battlefield sites, which we're closer than we realized! On Saturday evening we were able to walk down to the local bars to have some dinner and drinks out.
Requirements for checkout were a breeze. We hope to come back again with out husbands/ boyfriends/ fiances, and would consider renting this home again!
A little something about us- My girlfriends and I have an annual historic girls weekend each year in October; we try to chose a place with beautiful fall foliage, cool temps, deep history, and great shopping/ eats for our destination, and this year we decided on Gettysburg! We're all 30-somethings generally located in or around Pennsylvania, all coming from Philadelphia (3), Pittsburgh (2), and NYC (1). We did our fair share of research on location, transportation, and things to do, and we truly thought this home was just perfect. We also loved that the decorating was kept true to the era, and stories were provided about some of the furniture. We especially loved the brass bed frame and red room!
We enjoyed our stay here. The house was comfortable and meticulously clean. Great location to walk to shopping and restaurants. We’d recommend this house to anyone traveling to Gettysburg and would definitely stay here again.
