Quiet Renovated Barn

Bedrooms 1
Space 67 m²
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 7 nights

About the property

1 Bedroom, 1 Bathroom, Sleeps 3

Renovated barn sits just over the state line from the Berkshires, nestled on ten acres of the rolling hills of glorious Columbia County. It overlooks 1000 acres of Audubon Sanctuary and a crystal clear babbling stream which runs about 8 months of the year. We are on a lovely road for walking with beautiful views of the Taconic Ridge. The cottage is perfect for a person or couple who needs a get-a-way with no distractions unless they want them. It's a multi-level open plan cottage with original 1904 beams. Downstairs is an entry room, bath, and a living room/dining area with a modern kitchen and wood-burning stove. Upstairs is a bedroom with a queen sized bed and a study/den that includes a 2' x 8' desk top/work surface and a daybed. The study area has a large window opening to the stream, a native meadow and woods. All systems are recently updated and the kitchen is fully equipped.

The barn also faces our flower and organic vegetable garden with an orchard beyond with apples, peaches, plums, pears and persimmons. Beyond the pine trees, set in the meadow, is a 16' by 36' pool surrounded by hydrangea and plantings.

Hillsdale bridges the Berkshires and the Hudson Valley. We are conveniently located one mile from the hamlet with its IGA, gift shops, diner, fine restaurant, amazing library and the beautiful 400 acre Roe Jan Park. We are four miles from Catamount skiing. The cottage is a short drive from three great small towns. Ten miles east you'll find the Berkshire town of Great Barrington with desirable shopping, dining and entertainment. Heading west, we are 15 miles from the dynamic town of Hudson with antiques, galleries, restaurants and Club Helsinki. Millerton is 17 miles south. The amount of first-rate activity in this rural setting is astounding. Not only are there extraordinary arts, dining and shopping but also the great outdoors - trails, fishing, biking, Bash Bish Falls and climbing. The just opened Hillsdale section of the Harlem Valley Rail Trail, 1/3 mile down the road from us, makes a 2-1/2 mile loop with our our road. Cultural highlights include Jacob's Pillow, Tanglewood, Barrington Stage Theater, Berkshire Theater Festival, Shakespeare and Co., Falcon Ridge Folk Festival and many museums. About owner/property manager

John is a retired corporate librarian now active locally at Roeliff Jansen Community Library. He and his wife, Claudia, raised two sons in New York City.

Why owner/property manager chose Copake

We bought his property in 2005 for it's idyllic setting. The way the house sat on the site with the land rising in the back from floor level was particularly attractive. The house felt perfectly integrated with the land. There was a 100 foot long peony bed. (We fill the house and cottage with peonies beginning of June - What could be more luxurious?) The pool was there surrounded by trees and meadow but without the stone steps, the rail fence and hydrangeas. And the location between three great small towns was unbelievable.

But both the house and barn were in bad shape. The simple 1910 house had been added on to four times by previous owners and the floor of the old small barn was caving in. There was an asphalt parking pad in the backyard. We totally rebuilt both structures, keeping the original foot prints but removing walls to make spaces more open plan in feel. The landscaping has also been completely redone, with added stone work, an enlarged vegetable garden, more trees in the orchard and about nine perennial beds.

Fantastic property and wonderful, surprisingly spacious cottage! What else could you ever ask for? Owners were very approachable and helpful but gave us total privacy. We'll be back!

Hillsdale at its best!

Great property! Lovely views. Quiet, comfortable. Gracious owners and a pool to be left alone with. The only problem is I'm not the owner, just renting for the week.

The Goldilocks Cottage

  • 5 of 5

This was just right. I've rented a bunch of other -- 4 that I can think of -- places in the vicinity of Great Barrington. I think I'm all done shopping. This cottage is tastefully decorated but not flashy. It's on a very pretty piece of property with a babbling brook right outside your window. I happened to hit it off with the owners, who live on the property closer to the road, but if you preferred being ignored by them, it would be fairly easy to stay out of their way. Just so you know, there's no TV, although you could apparently do some kind of Chromecast/Google Home thing. But why? The views are breath-taking. There's a very nice super-friendly Saturday farmer's market practically across the road. Lovely, easy hikes very close by, and when the Harlem Valley Bike trail is finished, it will pass with within 1/2 or 3/4 of a mile of the property. You are about halfway between the restaurant mecca of Hudson -- go for the food; stay for the displaced Brooklyn hipsters with toddlers named Paloma -- and Great Barrington. You are VERY close to John Andrews, a very, very good high end place (but you can eat in the bar). Also, don't ignore the hamlet of Hillsdale. Great, creative sandwiches at the Crossroads, where the locals go every day and gossip, and a wild and crazy tiny little ice creamery next door. The cottage has everything you need and extra points for STRONG WIFI!! Warning: you will occasionally bump your head on the low- slanted bedroom ceiling, and you have to walk downstairs from the bedroom to pee. Bring a little Bluetooth speaker for music when hanging out downstairs.

Perfect getaway!

  • 5 of 5

I was searching for a charming cottage away from it all where I could focus on creative endeavors and wellness. Cady's cottage provides both the cozy nest and Berkshires location that makes this destination a perfect choice for those who want to control their mix of quiet and action. While here, I've enjoyed hiking and snowshoeing, visiting the literally hundreds of eclectic shops in very cultured nearby towns, going to day and candlelight yoga and exercise classes and enjoying the fantastic area restaurants. And the cottage provides beautifully for creatives with its two large workspaces with large windows overlooking a babbling brook. Perfect for watching the snow fall. Highly recommended.
