About this property

Quiet Renovated Barn

Renovated barn sits just over the state line from the Berkshires, nestled on ten acres of the rolling hills of glorious Columbia County. It overlooks 1000 acres of Audubon Sanctuary and a crystal clear babbling stream which runs 8 to 10 months of the year. We are on a lovely quiet road for walking with beautiful views of the Taconic Ridge. The cottage is perfect for a person or couple who needs a get-a-way with no distractions unless they want them. It's a multi-level open plan cottage with original 1904 beams. Downstairs is an entry room, bath, and a living room/dining area with a modern kitchen and wood-burning stove. Upstairs is a bedroom with a queen sized bed (new Casper mattress) and a study/den that includes a 2' x 8' desk top/work surface and 3 daybeds. The study area has a large window in front of the desk opening to the stream, a native meadow and woods. All systems are recently updated and the kitchen is fully equipped. There are air conditioners on both floors.

The barn also faces our flower and organic vegetable garden with an orchard beyond with apples, pears and persimmons. Beyond the pine trees, set in the meadow, is a 16' by 36' pool surrounded by hydrangea and plantings.

Hillsdale is the gateway between the Berkshires and the Hudson Valley. We are conveniently located one mile from the hamlet with its IGA, gift shops, diner, fine restaurants including the new Roe Jan Brewery, amazing library and the beautiful 400 acre Roe Jan Park. We are four miles from Catamount skiing. The cottage is a short drive from three great small towns. Ten miles east you'll find the Berkshire town of Great Barrington with desirable shopping, dining and entertainment. Heading west, we are 15 miles from the dynamic town of Hudson with antiques, galleries, restaurants and Club Helsinki. Millerton is 17 miles south. The amount of first-rate activity in this rural setting is astounding. Not only are there extraordinary arts, dining and shopping but also the great outdoors - trails, fishing, biking, Bash Bish Falls and climbing. The just opened Hillsdale section of the Harlem Valley Rail Trail, 1/3 mile down the road from us, makes a 2-1/2 mile loop with our our road. Cultural highlights include Jacob's Pillow, Tanglewood, Barrington Stage Theater, Berkshire Theater Festival, Shakespeare and Co., Falcon Ridge Folk Festival and many museums. (Note: Sign on cottage is a family heirloom, not a commercial venture.)

Vacation
I went to visit my son who is attending boarding school in the area. I explored all of the surrounding areas, lots of shopping, hiking, and yoga. It was a great trip and I was very happy with my accommodations.

Highly preferred getaway
Private, pleasant aesthetics, hush quiet, comfortable and well-equipped. Property owners friendly and readily accessible, kept us supplied with wood for the stove keeping the entire cottage plenty snug. Third time renting this home-away-from-home, a favorite getaway 2 hours from NYC, close to Hudson NY and Great Barrington MA with easy access to nature, life’s necessities and the arts.

Why they chose this property

We bought his property in 2005 for it's idyllic setting. The way the house sat on the site with the land rising in the back from floor level was particularly attractive. The house felt perfectly integrated with the land. There was a 100 foot long peony bed. (We fill the house and cottage with peonies beginning of June - What could be more luxurious?) The pool was there surrounded by trees and meadow but without the stone steps, the rail fence and hydrangeas. And the location between three great small towns was unbelievable.
But both the house and barn were in bad shape. The simple 1910 house had been added on to four times by previous owners and the floor of the old small barn was caving in. There was an asphalt parking pad in the backyard. We totally rebuilt both structures, keeping the original foot prints but removing walls to make spaces more open plan in feel. The landscaping has also been completely redone, with added stone work, an enlarged vegetable garden, more trees in the orchard and about nine perennial beds.
