Photos and Description of the Decorah vacation cabin rental

1 Bedroom, 1 Bathroom, 3 Sleeps

We are open seasonally from April 1 to October 31. We book out well in advance, so please give us a call about your 2016 stay.

Perched on a bluff overlooking Trout River valley, just seven miles from downtown Decorah, our farm is the ideal place to relax and enjoy the beauty of the Driftless Region. The house is small and simple by today's standards, but we are sure it has everything to make your stay comfortable and relaxing. Watch the sun set from the large porch with its breathtaking views of Trout River, and spend the evening stargazing under a pitch black sky.

Trout River meanders just down the hill from the cabin, and can be accessed by a five minute walk through the woods. We own over a half-mile of stream frontage. Its clear spring water makes for wonderful year-round trout fishing, or swimming and relaxing on a hot summer's day. Our farm makes for wonderful hiking, whether it be on the trails and deer tracks through the oak forest, along the meandering trout stream, or through our several fields of native prairie grasses. We recently won an award for our conservation practices, which include set-aside Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) native prairie lands around the stream and throughout the farm, bank stabilization, tree planting, and public fishing access. We own the only piece of private ground on Trout River that's open to public fishing. We're proud of that. Sorry, no hunting.

The state of Iowa owns 120 acres of public land just down the road available for fishing, hunting and hiking, too. And just a few miles beyond is the large and remote 1,000+ acre Coon Creek Wildlife Management Area. Come stay at one of the prettiest farms in all of the Driftless Region.

The cabin was built in the 1850s as a Norwegian-Lutheran parochial school. Built of old growth oak, walnut, and elm trees, the house feels rich and textured; the product of a different era. In 1898 it was disassembled, moved across a field, and rebuilt as a house by Norwegian immigrant Peter Losen. It remained lived in until the late 1970s and fell into disrepair. Beginning in 2007 we disassembled the house, moved it to its present site, and spent three years lovingly restoring it.

The cabin sleeps three. Upstairs is a comfy, yet very firm queen size bed. Linens, blankets and towels are provided. There is a pullout twin sized bed that may accommodate a third person, but note the pullout bed is in the same space as the queen bed.

On the main level you'll find a small yet totally functional kitchen stocked with all the kitchen supplies you'll need, including olive oil, fair trade and organic coffee and teas. Also on the main level you'll find comfy arm chairs, a kitchen table, a bookshelf of interesting books, board games, photo albums of the historic cabin and information of the surrounding area.

The bathroom is on the main floor and the shower is upstairs. Both the bathroom and shower are stocked with natural and organic soaps, shampoo and conditioner. Towels and wash cloths are provided.

Your cell phone and cellular data work here, but sorry, no TV or wireless internet access.
