About the property

Open Plan Cottage With 2 Bedrooms And Stunning Views Of Harbour And Gardens.

This home was created my parents, she a keen gardener from England, he an educator and businessman who was raised in the community. They  retired here and created a  unique environment amid the rugged setting of an authentic fishing village.  The home is surrounded by hand-planted trees and gardens, and it offers fabulous views of Old  Bonaventure harbour and beautiful  Trinity Bay.     At the rear of the house a small waterfall flows into a stream which runs right under the  house and through the front lawn, providing a most relaxing soundscape for restful  nights of sleep and memorable afternoon naps.     The two double bedrooms, each with an en-suite bathroom, accommodate four adults.  There is a large, well-equipped kitchen with double ovens, a five-ring stove top and a dishwasher, along with every imaginable utensil. There is a breakfast area positioned

beneath a skylight, and a more formal dining table overlooking the harbour. The comfortable lounge area is especially cosy with plenty of seating. It also features an inviting

Vermont Castings wood-burning stove with a supply of firewood. Wi-fi internet access

reaches all parts of the house and property. For entertainment,  there is a flatscreen TV with Bell satellite service. DVD and CD players are also provided, along with a Bluetooth speaker for iPhones, etc.  A landline phone is provided, with  Canada/US wide unlimited long distance calling. This helps offset the fact that, like most rural Newfoundland communities, Old Bonaventure is not serviced by any cell phone service provider.

The secluded garden features a pond and a wide variety of plants that provide  spectacular colour throughout the spring/summer/fall seasons. The harbourfacing side of the house has a deck (with a gas BBQ). On warm days,  this is a perfect spot to enjoy sunsets, watch fishing boats come and go, and to see  magnificent eagles soar overhead from their nearby nests. There is a glassroofed  conservatory which is perfect for enjoying those cooler days and for stargazing at  night. For the musically inclined, there is also a superb piano. For readers, there is a  huge selection of books that cover every interest. Finally, there is an ample collection of  board games and playing cards.    This inviting home is the ideal retreat for a restful and restorative holiday. And when  you are rested, numerous nearby attractions await to connect you with the beauty and  fascinating history of this special part of Newfoundland. For instance, the film site of the acclaimed “Random Passage” series is just a five minute drive. (Just one of four films  shot in this area in recent years.) Hiking trails take you to the resettled outports of  Kerley’s Harbour and British Harbour. The Skerwink Trail, an essential experience for  hikers with spectacular views, is just 30 minutes away. Boat excursions for  whalewatching and for glimpsing historic and enigmatic resettled outports depart daily  from New Bonaventure and Trinity. If that is not enough history to satisfy, the

500 year old town of Trinity is only 25 minutes away.

Newfoundland is famous for it's music and storytelling and there are many local concerts and festivals. If you are staying at Old Bonaventure House keep an eye out for our Facebook page ( where we regularly post local events for you to enjoy.

The options are endless...and the  comments of previous visitors speak for themselves! This is a holiday experience that  you will want to share with others.

We love Old Bonaventure House! So much so that very soon after discovering it, we returned for another visit. The cottage has so much character with large wooden beams, high ceilings and so many wonderful spaces to sit and read, and take in all the views. The design is really unique, with a brook than runs under the house when there's a run-off, and a waterfall amid mossy woods up behind. Very special little place, like a secret garden. In fact, there are beautiful gardens all around the cottage. We loved curling up by the wood stove on rainy days (and even the not so rainy!) - perfect after a day out hiking and exploring. And really, there are so many things to see and do in the area; the entire peninsula is stunning!

Dawne is a great host who leaves the sweetest surprises for her guests. Such a nice touch. We enjoyed her fresh flower cuttings this visit and some delightful chocolates and homemade jam. With books to enjoy throughout, great sleeping quarters (each with modern en suites) - this place exudes all the warmth and care of a family who built this special place over time. Old Bonaventure House has everything we want in a get-away and we look forward to visiting again soon, next time to see the fall colours. Can't wait!!

The perfect retreat

  • 5 of 5

This was our 2nd stay at Dawn's beautiful cottage and won't be our last. This place has everything you need for the perfect weekend (or longer) retreat. All the comforts of home but situated in a tiny coastal village with beautiful views and nestled in a mountainside. And the location is strategically located, minutes away from random passage, trinity and port rexton. We look forward to visiting again in the near future!

A Calm Retreat

  • 5 of 5

Old Bonavista House was so comfortable we didn't want to leave. Everything we could possibly want or need, and more, was provided, even speciality coffees, teas, and cooking oil. Dawne had also left little vases of fresh flowers and a gift of chocolate. Be sure to explore the lovely gardens around and behind the house, too and spend some time in the beautiful conservatory.

There are clear views of Bonavista Harbour from all of the living areas. The cove is magical, especially in the early morning light and at sunset.

Thank you Dawne. We had a wonderful stay.

Amazing, quirky house

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay in this character house, it had everything you could possibly need. The huge kitchen is so well stocked with pots and pans and utensils and all four of us prepared and cooked together.

The beds are so comfy too with lots of pillows and extra covers.

The real bonus is finding a house for 4 adults with both bedrooms ensuite.

Fabulous place to stay.

We miss it already!

  • 5 of 5

Exactly what my wife and I were looking for in order enjoy our 24th wedding anniversary. We looked at a lot of places around the island and elated that we picked the Old Bonaventure House! Very quiet, secluded, scenic and overall a "very cool" place to spend a few days. A perfect spot for two couples to visit for a relaxing time and spacious enough not to be in each others way. And if you like to cook, the kitchen is well stocked with just about everything you may need to get the job done. Looking forward to our next visit with some friends as this place should be shared. And thank you Dawne for sharing it with us. It was nice chatting with you and we look forward to seeing you again!
