Rick’s Place

Discover how to REALLY relax!
Would you like to relax in your own peaceful pool that you share with no one, listening to your favorite tunes, while contemplating the vast expanse of the ocean right in front of you - amazing whales, spinner dolphins and colorful fish, the sunsets, and complete serenity, for less than the price of a resort hotel room? Then our home will be perfect for you.
If you are like us, you want to do nothing but relax and disconnect while on vacation. We don’t like resorts, eating every meal out, sitting around a pool with 100 other people.
Rick’s Place is a cozy, romantic home, perfect for two. Unwind, enjoy each other’s company, and disconnect from your crazy busy life. We suggest stopping in town for a few groceries. Spend your days sitting around in the solar-heated pool, reading on the lanai or sitting by the sea wall. Watch the whales jump in the winter months (they will wake you up at night during whale season!), Enjoy cooking dinner on the gas barbeque or in our well-equipped kitchen while enjoying an icy cocktail. Milolii sunsets are the highlight of the day- no two are ever the same. Turn off all the lights and lay out on the chaise lounges and look at the moon and the Milky Way at night. Showering in the outdoor shower with the ocean breeze blowing on you is refreshing and revitalizing. There is good Wi-Fi and Direct TV on smart TVs, as well as a Blu-Ray player.
There is a viewing area on the cliff where you can sit and contemplate the sea while enjoying your morning coffee or your evening libations. The Kona fishing fleet aims for the waters in front of the house, so sometimes you can witness a hook-up while staring out to sea (we provide binoculars). You can look down and see tropical fish and the occasional turtle swim by. Sometimes the surf is high and the waves crash against the cliff dramatically. One guest called the high surf “Hawaiian fireworks” which is a great description.
The drive down from the highway takes you from 1500 ft. elevation to sea level across a lava flow. We remember our first impression! It’s a long, narrow, winding ride, but there are spectacular views on the way down. If you want to go to town every night or do a lot of sightseeing, the drive may be inconvenient. For a day trip every few days, it is no big deal.
There is easy access to water and great snorkeling a short walk north of the house at the Milolii Beach Park. There are many beautiful beaches and good restaurants within an hour’s drive. Our house is centrally located between Kailua-Kona and Volcanoes National Park.
If you need supplies during your stay, there are well-stocked grocery stores 20 minutes south, in Ocean View.
Our home has one bedroom, 1.5 baths, plus an outdoor full bath with a shower overlooking the ocean. Every room in the house except the half bath offers up an ocean view. Kitchen is easy to cook in and is well-appointed, and the living area is furnished very comfortably and is open and breezy. Bedroom and living room glass French doors open to the ocean view and breeze. The wrap-around lanai includes a small solar heated pool.

Another Amazing Stay
This was our second time at Rick’s Place and we were not disappointed. We stayed on the property 3 days and explored the island other days but made a point to be back to see the gorgeous sunsets. Dolphins came by almost every day, and we even saw a shark. Dan is an amazing host and easy to deal with. We really enjoyed connecting our iPhones and playing Spotify through his stereo system. Nothing better than listening to your favorite tunes while enjoying the incredible views from the patio deck. The outdoor shower is so relaxing. We look forward to coming back for another relaxing vacation.

Ricks Place was Incredible!! We had a Great time and if we were just to relax here that would have been fine! Very comfortable with everything you need except food and theirs 2 markets just 11 miles to the south! Only here 6 nights but could have stayed much longer! Loved the pool and outdoor shower and the chairs out front to view sunsets!! We saw whales - dolphins and turtles right out front!! Dan's a great guy and glad we met him and he help with what ever we wanted!! My wife and I always rate the places we visit and we both said Rick's place is A+!!! Hope to return soon! John & Jenny

True paradise
Wow! The only critique of this place is that the pictures do not do it justice. Seeing the beautiful green roof as we came down the mountain was exciting. While the home is beautiful, the first moment that we walked out the back door, we were in awe of the ocean beating against the cliffs. We had a high surf warning, and enjoyed a front seat to the waves splashing against the volcanic rock on the patio. It was a wonderful welcome, and instantly put us in awe of the beauty of the area. This home is wonderfully located between Volcanoes National park and Kona. However, getting to Hilo was not an inconvenience. Being in the southern area of the island, it was easy to make both sides of the island very attainable. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and would highly recommend visiting Volcano National Park, Richardson’s Ocean Park and Rainbow Falls in Hilo, the Green Sand Beach, Black Sand Beach, and spending a day enjoying Kona as well. We rented a boat from Kona boat rental, and enjoyed snorkeling at Captain Cook and taking in the ocean. Couldn’t have been a more enjoyable experience and true getaway!! Thank you, Dan, for opening your home, and providing hospitality along the way.

I live on a nine acre farm above Milolii by the Highway. I made the big leap across the ocean from the tiny Northern California town of Angels Camp. I am now a full-time Hawaii resident. I have been a business owner all my working life. I had a fishing tackle/marine/gas station/mini mart deli on a lake for 20 years and I was also a partner in a stone masonry sales and manufacture yard as well as a mobile lube company. I enjoy meeting new people and love to meet my guests. I have made so many new friends from all over the country and world. I find this my favorite thing about sharing this home with others.

Why they chose this property

Why is the house called Rick’s Place? The house was purchased from my good friend from Maui, Rick, who built it. For years, I would visit Milolii with him. Rick is an ultra-cool, amazingly artistic guy, and the architecture of the house shows his artistic flair and creativity. I have been blessed with friends and family who have helped us make it a truly loved special place, with most of the artwork furnished by talented friends.

What makes this property unique

The first time I visited Milolii, I wondered where where I was going, as I drove down the long road across the lava flow. But once I was sitting on the deck, overlooking the blue ocean and watching the humpbacks against the background of a red sunset, I understood the magic of the place. I helped Rick install the pool several years later, and that really made the house perfect. I'm pretty sure there is not another ocean front house anywhere in Hawaii or even in the USA with a private pool that is an affordable vacation rental. I love this house and you will be able to tell. It's not one of those vacation rentals furnished with cheap furniture and bare minimum of kitchen stuff. It is very well appointed and I do my very best to make sure you are comfortable in every way.
