Sea legs are essential inside this charismatic custom residence which is in 'Bristol' condition, and boasts built-in furnishings crafted from Honduran mahogany by the owner and local craftsmen including well known shipwrights and furniture makers. Most of the rooms are split-level to take full advantage of the 170 degree water views beyond the 185' frontage on the Damariscotta River. This property has almost every desirable amenity to make your stay memorable. It has just been made available for seasonal rental after having been taken off the market for the past 10 years.
The multi-level residence is entered from the private road and has a herringbone brick courtyard. Three wide granite steps lead down to a covered bridge spanning a moat that empties into adjacent gurgling waterfalls and small ponds. There is also stone stairs which lead to the rear patio and kitchen door.
The double door entry affords choice of the mud/laundry room or the entry foyer. This overlooks the bar entertainment area which is 4 steps down, and also leads to the stairway to the master bedroom suite above.
This central entertainment level contains a large mahogany bar with sink and 8' of cabinets with Corian countertop for buffet type dining. It opens to the living room (up two steps), the large mullti-level deck, and also down four steps to the main level.
The 20'x30' living room with cathedral ceiling has a massive stone fireplace, ceiling fan, large flat screen TV, stereo, well-tuned 6' grand piano, extensive library of books and music. The custom upholstery was done by the late, great Al Sherman. The sofa is down filled. The carpet was replaced this year with hardwood flooring.
On the main level, there is a large open area with cathedral ceiling which contains the kitchen at the rear and the dining area towards the water. Centrally is the island where most folk gather while waiting for dinner or helping the cook with the prep work.
The kitchen allows the cook(s) to join the conversations and boasts a brand new commercial Wolf/Vulcan six burner range and custon fabricated commercial hood. Adjacent to the stove is a special faucet for filling large pots. The kitchen has a glass ceiling for the afternoon sun and windows which when opened allow the sounds of the waterfalls to permeate the room. There is a pantry off the kitchen which also has a prep area and a commercial salamander (broiler). There is also a secret larder/pantry behind the well-stocked cookbook library, There is almost every conceivable utensil including baking pans, pizza pans, crepe pan, and large collection of cookware, bamboo steamers, with more large stock pots than most local restaurants. Also a wok, large paella pan etc. There is a Ninja blender, Cuisinart food processor, panini press, waffle iron, submersible mixer, mandolin (bought in Paris). You can even find four custom-made wooden sushi boards and tons of chopsticks. There is an excellent pepper mill. The kitchen is equipped with most spices and there is an herb garden on the deck.
The range is a 6 burner putting out 30,000 BTU each (watch out) commercial Wolf/Vulcan (they merged, so it's actually a Vulcan with Wolf knobs) and the 35,000 BTU oven is full size, holding one full or two half pans on each shelf. A special pot-filler faucet adjacent makes it easier for those with marginal upper body strength.
The dishwasher is the very best model Miele. The refrigerator is a s/s side by side Jennaire with ice maker. There are slate counter tops with fabricated large country sink. A second sink for prepping is in the pantry below a commercial salamander (broiler) which is used occasionally.
The dishes and coffee mugs are heavy and oven-proof. There are some china cups and saucers for the afternoon tea and cups soft-boiled eggs. There is an assortment of utilitarian glasses and the wine glasses are just basic (sorry, no Reidel stemware).
The master bedroom in the tower has a queen bed constructed like in a yacht with vented mahogany drawers below it and a comfortable mattress. The 14 foot high ceiling has intersecting beams and an original Hunter fan. It has window seating and opens onto a private deck (with awning) where a couple can share their morning coffee or afternoon cocktails. The master bath is in the rear of the room and is up two stairs through a dressing area. The tub is a reconditioned claw foot (skirted in a mahogany deck, with plumbing moved to the side to accommodate two bathers who each have a water view. There is a separate shower with two heads. All furniture is built-in yacht style and made from mahogany (including the drawer interior parts). Counter tops are Corian inlaid with tavle edge moldings. Some counter tops are inlaid with mahogany pieces.
The second 'master' bedroom has an antique double rope bed of tiger maple. There is a walk-in closet and ensuite bath. the 3'x5' custom tiled shower can accommodate two bathers and has a high bench. It has a water view (through the porch).
The porch is fully winterized with radiant heating in the tiled floor. Brown Jordan outdoor furniture ... what else. The mahogany door was designed made by the owner and served as the model for the double front doors, which were made later by the late David Margonelli (who helped with the original one).
At the rear of the main floor is the third bathroom with a similar shower and serves the third bedroom, which is a large loft tpwer suite at the top of the stairs. It has large windows for view and ventilation along with a ceiling fan. There is a double hand-carved antique bed and large stuffed sofa with matching chair. Originally designed for a pool table/game room, it overlooks the main floor, but has the privacy of a half wall (book cases).
There is a semi-detached timber-frame barn at the southern end of the property with garage at street level and artist's studio above. The owners reserve this for their own use.
At the end of a private road; very private. Less than a quarter mile walk to the quaint village of East Boothbay. Three miles to downtown Boothbay Harbor.
