About the property

4 Bedrooms, 1.5 Bathrooms, Sleeps 8 (additional guests require approval)

Wisconsin’s second-tallest mountain and a peaceful, clear-water chain of lakes are among the many features of our family cottage located in unincorporated Mt. Morris, in the heart of recreation-rich Waushara County.

Wake up to the sparkling, spring-fed, 15-acre Emerald Lake. Dive off our wide pier and splash out to our swimming raft. Kayak, canoe, row or motor under a white footbridge onto Morris Lake, the skiable 180-acre lake and heart of the five-lake Morris chain.

Watch the sun rise over Mt. Morris, and walk just a few steps to our private beach on Morris Lake for a flaming central-Wisconsin sunset. Back at The Cottage, an over-sized hammock invites you to an afternoon nap. When the moon and stars come out, grill a dinner and sit down at our 8-seat picnic table, then enjoy a campfire on our spacious sand patio. Ample split wood is provided.

Guests have free access to our rowboat, canoe, paddle board and two kayaks, with paddles and life jackets provided. Powerboat rentals are available in Wautoma, seven miles away. Large-mouth bass, bluegill, and sunfish are abundant and ready to strike. Spend the day netting painted turtles or searching for herons, beavers and deer along the shores of the chain of lakes.

The cottage's large, glassed-in porch has a panoramic view of Emerald Lake and is ideal for evening card games or quiet reading. The vintage tube-powered stereo radio was recently restored and is ready for your listening pleasure.

The master bedroom is set apart from the three others and just steps from a new wood-burning stove with a hearth made of local stone. The cottage's beds comfortably sleep eight. While we have set our occupancy limit at eight, if your family requires a little more room, we have two canvas cots and a reclining leather couch that may accommodate your needs. Please remember, there will be an additional charge for guest counts over eight.

The kitchen is fully stocked with pots and pans, a gas stove and microwave oven, a two-well sink, refrigerator and utensils. An antique oak pedestal table comfortably seats six, expandable to eight.

From The Cottage, it’s just a short walk to unincorporated Mt. Morris, which features a quaint, 19th-century mill that is enjoying a second life as an ice cream and coffee shop. Just steps down the road is The Trading Post, a popular restaurant and night spot where good food and live music attract locals and visitors from throughout the area.

Hike or drive up Mt. Morris and enjoy the panoramic views of central Wisconsin farmland, as well as tennis, horse shoe pits, a play lot, and picnic area. On the other side of the mountain is Nordic Mountain resort, offering exciting mountain bike trails and a wake-board training facility. An archery golf course--where bows and arrows replace balls and clubs--can be found just a short drive away.

Mt. Morris is in the heart of Waushara County, a recreational jewel in heartland America. Within a 10-minute drive from the cottage, the 27-hole Waushara Country Club features elevated tees, wooded fairways, and plentiful hills and water features. Waushara County’s rolling hills and smooth-running roads are ideal for bicycle touring. Nearby farms offer strawberry picking and foot-long sweetcorn all summer long.

Visit a cluster of Amish farms outside Wautoma, where baked goods, quilts, furniture and crafts are sold. Explore the antique shops of nearby Wild Rose or Berlin. Visit the rock quarry-cum-nature park in Redgranite, and swim in the deep quarry lake. Enjoy a polka band at the Golden Nugget in nearby Pine River, or rent an over-sized inner tube or a compact canoe and paddle down Waupaca’s Crystal River.

The Cottage has been in our family for nearly 70 years, and some of our guests have been visiting for 20 years and more. Decades have passed since our immigrant grandparents bought the cottage as a wedding present for our parents, but the rest and recreation of a week on the lake is one thing that, thankfully, never seems to change.

Very clean, loved the record player and selection that went with it.

We came here for our 1st (our family only) vac and Mt Morris didn't disappoint. We enjoyed the kayaks and our boys loved the paddle board and float. Sun rises and moon coming up were awesome! My in-laws joined us for 2 days and loved it too. The fishing was slow but the fish are there (saw them when I jumped in the kayak). The big bonus for us was the strawberry farm 500' down the road. Had a lot of great family time and would highly recommend if you're looking to get off of the grid for a few days!

Owner's Response: We recently restored the vintage stereo/turntable. We love "spinning" the albums and listening to the classic vinyl. We are happy that you appreciated the music. Sounds like the entire family - 3 generations - participated and that is what we envision when we prepare the cottage each season. Please come back. The Mt. Morris Cottage

The cabin had everything we needed and the lake was beautiful and very relaxing.

We had a great time and there were very few others around so we had the lake to ourselves. Everything worked well and all the water vessels got used daily. We will definitely consider returning again.

Owner's Response: Glad to hear you had a great time. Often, the lake is quiet and little traffic. The lake is part of a chain, and we are located on the best swim lake of the chain - no wake, so there are no skiers or jet skis. We hope you do come again!

Cabin Love

  • 5 of 5

Our family loved staying here. Plenty of room. Good set up. Right on the water. We had several moonlit nights where we sat on the dock just looking at the water. Our visit was equivalent to a big sigh of relief. We needed a reprieve from our schedule and we got it here. I really enjoyed using the paddle board!

Cozy, great getaway

  • 5 of 5

This was our second visit to the cottage and we had an even better time this visit. Walking in, it smelled like fall (leaves and pine wood and grandma’s cabin)! The new bathroom/remodel was a hit and the wood stove took the bite out of the chilly October air. My family loved the record player and lake view. This is a great place to unwind and make memories with family. I hope it never changes!

Owner's Response: So glad to have you back again in Mt. Morris. Hope you got under some of the thick warm blankets we leave up there, although between the heater and the wood-burning stove, it is usually nice and toasty. Our favorite in the fall is to take a hike to the top of the Mountain to look at the colors for as far as the eye can see. Nice time for some mountain biking or hiking the trails too. We love to hear that new families are building their own memories. Hope to see you back again.

Just what I needed!

  • 5 of 5

Spent a long weekend at the Mt. Morris peaceful and cozy! Really appreciated the water equipment (kayak and SUP) and the fire pit, and enjoyed hanging out in the hammock, hiking to the nearby coffee shop, restaurant and scenic mountains. The cabin itself is so clean, roomy, and comfortable, with a beautiful view of the lake from the porch. Thank you, Marcia, for all of your input and for sharing your cabin paradise!

Our family takes great pride in having the Cottage clean and ready for guests, and we hope the night sky was as beautiful as always while you were sitting by the fire...did you have a chance to enjoy S'mores? Thanks for the great review, and we hope you find time to come back and visit again.

Cottage Fun!

  • 5 of 5

Just spent a week at this lovely cottage with our family. The location was really wonderful. We had lots of swimming, kayaking, paddle boarding and fishing. The cottage provided everything we needed! The cottage is a short walk or kayak trip to a delightful coffee/ice cream shop and a restaurant/bar. Be on the lookout for lots of little fish and turtles swimming right by the dock.

Owner's Response: Thank you kindly for the great review! Sounds like you mixed in some of our family favorites, with rest, relaxation, activity, and adventure. Rumor has it that the lake has some big fish in it too...Bass and Northern for sure. We seem to find the same ones you found...lots of Bluegill, Sunfish, and Perch. Loads of fun for the kids off the end of the pier.

The Cottage is located in unincorporated Mt. Morris, just 7 miles northeast of Wautoma, Wisconsin. Located 45 miles from Stevens Point, 30 miles from Oshkosh and 64 miles from Wisconsin Dells, the Cottage is centrally located in the beautiful countryside of Waushara County.

Each of the local towns offer special features of rural Americana. Antique shops are plentiful, and are very reasonably priced. There are lots of unique shops, including a local Amish owned store in Wautoma. Nearby Wild Rose has one of the best antique shops in the area - lots of furniture and collectibles.

There are many nearby dining options. Silvercryst offers 'great steaks',just 6 miles away. Moose Inn, is another great choice for a family outing. The towns of Red Granite and Wild Rose offer nearby dining choices - we will provide a detailed listing of recommended locations once you book your vacation.

Wautoma is the place where you can find convenient shopping, less than 15 minutes away. A large Piggly Wiggly, Ace Hardware, Dollar Store, Culvers, Subway, and other well known retailers allow you to stock up. No need to pack the car full of supplies, when you can take a quick trip to town to get what you need!

Golfers won't get bored. Nearby Waushara Country Club is challenging and picturesque. Two Oaks is also located in Wautoma - ranked 3.5 stars - about 8 miles away. The awesome Lawsonia Golf Course is in nearby Green Lake, if you are willing to travel about 45 minutes (30 miles). Lawsonia is ranked 4.5 stars and 15/50 'most fun' public courses. The summer twilight rate, walking is only $30!!!

Waupaca is about 20 minutes away and offers additional dining options, shops, movie theatres, and pubs. The Crystal River offers river trips with family friendly trips, safe with a little bit of challenge.

Oshkosh is about 30 minutes to the east. Oshkosh offers the worlds best Aviation Museum, and hosts the worlds largest air show yearly. Oshkosh also has a spectacular Outlet Mall, just off Hwy 41 - two miles south of Hwy. 21.

Most people find their week filled with the lake and local activities, but if you are determined to take a daytrip, the famous Wisconsin Dells is about 1.25 hours to the southwest. Take a ride on the famous Duck boats, and get a day pass at one of the many world famous water parks. You'll be back at the cottage in time to roast some marshmallows by the lake before you turn in for the night.

Nordic Mountain, located in Mt. Morris, about .75 miles away, offers a wakeboard park. The wakeboard park offers lessons for beginners, and jumps for the experts. Stop by and schedule some time with the local trainers.

If you want to do some power boating/skiing, nearby Marks' marina rents boats by the day or week. Marks' is located in Wautoma, on Hwy. 21, about 15 minutes away.

Stevens Point is also a unique Wisconsin city. Only about 45 minutes to the northwest, Stevens Point has a great brewery tour and other small city attractions.

Berlin is another small, country town that offers local shops and dining. About 20 minutes to the southeast, off Hwy. 59, Berlin is worth a half day to explore.

Red Granite is 5 miles to the southeast has a classic swimming quarry. Originally, a stone quarry for the state rock, it now is filled with clean and cool water - a great place to visit - bring your favorite floatation device.

One of the best aspects of Mt. Morris is its location in central Wisconsin, Waushara county. There are miles and miles of county/country roads that are well maintained and sparsely traveled. Spend time just driving/biking the local roads and seeing America at its rural best.
