You will find William Roam toiletries for your convenience. The beautiful view of the historic courthouse might distract you from the LED HD televisions, but you are sure to sleep well on the high quality sheets and Tempur-Pedic mattress. The fully equipped kitchen is stocked with Fiestaware and gourmet coffee service.

Located in the heart of Fayetteville's historic district, Lafayette Flats is an easy stroll from the delicious locally owned restaurants and charming shops that make up one of America's coolest small towns. About Amy McLaughlin & Shawn Means

I'm Amy and my husband's name is Shawn. We were both born and raised in Charleston, WV, where we still live and we both work for the same non-profit organization. Charleston is only about one hour from Fayetteville, so lucky for us, the best vacation spot in West Virginia is close by.

Lafayette Flats began with our simple desire to get out of town. We love our home in Charleston's East End but we really like to travel. We found out early in our relationship that we travel together well and we love to do it as often as we can. We love taking weekend driving trips to places like Asheville, Columbus, Charlotte and Louisville, and we've been all over our home state of West Virginia. Two years ago we drove across the country on Route 66 and last fall we toured Northern California - Yosemite, Redwoods, Wine Country - we loved it all. But big trips are few and far between, so we satisfy our travelin' Jones by making the drive up to Fayetteville as often as we can. Maybe it's the Bacon Jam at The Secret Sandwich Society or the breathtaking views from Long Point Trail, but something keeps us coming back again and again.

We looked for a small apartment in Fayetteville that we could rent, just to have a home base where we could escape to on weekends but found nothing suitable. After months of searching we decided to take on a project where we could build our own space. We looked a several opportunities, but the one that caught our eye was the historic building on the corner of Court Street and Wiseman Avenue - known as 'The Malcolm Building.' This building was built in 1906 to house The Bank of Fayette and is on the National Register of Historic Places as part of Fayetteville's Historic District.

Our home in Charleston is in a 100 year-old townhouse community, so I guess it's safe to say that we are drawn to old buildings.

We spent the summer and fall of 2013 renovating the building - doing much of the work ourselves. We are eager to show off our space!

Why Amy McLaughlin & Shawn Means chose Fayetteville

Our love for Fayetteville and the New River Gorge area caused us to something we had never done before: We bought and renovated this historic cut stone building, transforming the top two floors into four apartment style vacation rentals. Quinnimont is one of four flats in the building, and the one that we call our second home.

Since it is on the Historic Registry, we were very intentional in our renovation plan to leave the building intact as much as possible. Originally built to be an office building, each floor only had one common bathroom and the heating in the building was hot water radiators. Since it was built before electricity, the electrical system was hodgepodge of makeshift circuits and ancient fuse boxes. Along with theses negatives, though, were a lot of positives: The beautiful original woodwork is still there and the fortress-like construction means that the building is very sturdy. The beautiful cut-stone exterior looks exactly like it did when it was built a century ago.

Our renovation plans preserved the woodwork and the basic configuration of the building. Installing a new electrical system and the plumbing necessary to support two additional bathrooms and kitchens was done in such a way as not to change the character of the building. Fire codes made us make some alterations to doorways, but overall the building looks as it has for the last century.

But in spite of the ancient spaces of this small town former bank building, the interior design is chic, modern and urban. We want to offer visitors to Fayetteville something completely different from the campsites, cabins and large vacation home rentals available in the area. Furnished with all the comforts of home and decorated to the nines with local original art and many unique design elements, this is not your typical vacation rental! We want you to more than just feel at home - we want you to wish that you lived here!

What makes this apartment unique

Most lodging in the New River Gorge area is campsites, cabins or oversized vacation homes in remote settings. Lafayette Flats offers a small town main street lodging experience with walkable access to unique locally owned restaurants, shops and activities.

The decor, with an emphasis on local original art, provides visitors with a rich cultural experience. Travelers interested in history will enjoy staying in a building listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the stunning view of the Fayette County Courthouse.

Even though Lafayette Flats sits on main street downtown, it still is walking distance from National Park trail heads and all of the outdoor adventure that the New River Gorge provides.

Guestbook comments from the owner

I just wanted to touch base with you and tell you how wonderful our stay was. I have to tell you, we have rented apartments/houses all over the world for the last 15 years. My husband and I agreed that your apartments were the most beautiful we have ever stayed in. The apartments are like little works of art. Everything is perfect.

It is one of our goals to introduce Lafayette Flats visitors to a new way to think about West Virginia. We want to surprise our guests with the real West Virginia and nothing will make us happier than if they walk away with an impression that is different from the prejudices they might have held when they arrived. We have tried to do this through the design, art and literature of each flat. We think that Fayetteville itself helps to illustrate this new narrative. Here is a place that through the years has attracted the attention of many people with its amazing beauty and rich supply of natural resources. But instead of repeating our state's history, where those resources are scooped up and taken away on a train, the New River Gorge has been able to remain beautifully intact and now welcomes people to come here to enjoy it.

  • 5 of 5

It's easy to see from the website and all the five star reviews that this is a beautiful place to stay! It's even better in person! There are so many details in this old building and so much character that was left for all of us to enjoy! My husband and I look forward to another sweet time away in this beautiful old renovated building! We have loved Fayetteville West Virginia for years and to me this property is the icing on the cake for anyone who wants to be close to everything and not have to worry about needing anything! It's comfortable, warm and wonderful. We love The Artsy Urban vibe! The owners make sure you have everything you need. I honestly can't say enough nice things about this place! The communication was always quick and courteous! Thank you for a beautiful place to stay in one of our favorite places!

best rental ever!

  • 5 of 5

Seriously, this was the best rental I've ever booked via VRBO, AirBnb, etc. Amy and Shawn made everything super easy, and they've done an amazing job redoing this building. It was like staying in a high end hotel, but with much more character! They also helped out with a list of things going on in town the weekend we were visiting, and it was awesome to have several great eateries within walking distance. We'll be back!

Perfect Wedding Weekend Lodging

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the Flats for three nights over our wedding weekend at Adventures on the Gorge. The other lodging in the area seemed either outdated or overpriced for what was offered, but after seeing pictures of these luxurious rooms, we knew we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to stay somewhere unique. Our family members stayed at two of the other flats, and one of my relatives said afterwards that they didn’t know West Virginia could be so nice!

This was such a treat. The rooms are even better than the pictures—simply gorgeous. They’re spacious, finely decorated, and feature ample natural lighting. When we arrived, we were even greeted by a thoughtful note from the owners congratulating us on our wedding. The local artwork was so cool; every time we walked in, we noticed something new, from the marbles above the doorway to the person rappelling down the side of the fridge. We had a few guests over while getting ready for the wedding, and they all oohed and ahhed about the space.

Parking was somewhat difficult, as the three spaces provided behind the building are very narrow, and one doesn’t seem like a spot at all. As mentioned in the listing, there’s a map of free parking spots in the entryway to the Flats. After unloading, we mostly stayed parked across the street at the courthouse.

It was also fun to explore the surrounding Fayetteville shops, including the local bakery, cafés, hidden antique stores, and gift shops. We held a group lunch at the Secret Sandwich Society down the road and dinner at the nearby Pies and Pints, both of which were great experiences.

The location and ambiance of the Flats were perfect for our wants and needs. Thank you for being a part of our wonderful wedding memories!

Beautiful home away from home

  • 5 of 5

Perfect place to stay. Great location. The flat was well furnished and provided all of the comforts of home. I was visiting the area to compete in an obstacle course race at The Summit. Thanks to the fantastic bathtub, comfortable bed and well equipped kitchen, I had everything that I needed to help me stay race ready. Hope to be back again soon to enjoy other activities in the area.
