About the property

4 Bedroom, Historic Cape On 14 Acres / Walk To Beach

Built in 1720, this cozy farmhouse is a cool summer retreat for those seeking a simple quiet vacation. The house is located on 14 acres of fields and woodlands adjacent to the expansive Clayhead nature preserve and other large private holdings. Take the 10 minute nature trail walk to Clayhead beach to swim and sunbathe or continue a further 300 yards south to the famous Mansion Beach. The trail also brings you under the Clayhead bluffs where you can enjoy the best striped bass fishing in the world. Walk north under the bluffs for about an hour to reach the iconic surfcaster's destination of Sandy Point or stalk nearer coves for 40lb bass. You can also follow the meandering trail along the top of cliffs with exceptional eastern views of the ocean, the ferry coming and going and Old Harbor.

Reaching town takes about 5 minutes by car or 15 by bicycle.

Guests are allowed access to a high-end propane grill.

A shaded picnic table and set of lawn chairs allows guests to enjoy their meals beneath 100 year old maples.

The large front yard is ideal for lawn sports.

The nearby Block Island Club offers weekly rates for sailboat rentals and tennis court access. Cars, Kayaks and Bicycles and Standup Paddle Boards may be rented in town.

Accessing the bedrooms requires the use of historic 1720's staircases which are rather steep. They are not recommended for the elderly or infirm or young children. One ground level bedroom is available for those who are limited physically.

A barn on the property is occupied by owners.

About Susan Littlefield

Littlefields have farmed the island since 1690 and this property was originally a Littlefield homestead built in 1720. We have lived year round on the island for over 30 years and bought this property to enjoy the privacy and raise our honeybees. Chris has worked as a conservationist with The Nature Conservancy preserving the island's open space for over 20 years. We have harvested our Block Island wildflower honey since 1984. Both of our children were raised here. Our son is an accomplished artist who shows his sculptures on both the east and west coasts.

Susan Littlefield purchased this house in 1999

Why Susan Littlefield chose Block Island

We love the shady serenity here in the summer. It seems to be about 10 degrees cooler here than in town and the trees are remarkable. Walking to beach without having to find a parking place, taking an outside shower, sitting under the maples, napping in the shade, grilling while the kids run in the yard, gazing at the stars…these are all the things we love about our property in the summer.

Peaceful and relaxing

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time staying in this home. The yard is great for games with the family and friends or just relaxing. The quick walk down clay head trail to the beach is an added bonus. It is close enough to everything but far enough away to enjoy the peace and quiet. The home was neat and clean when we arrived. The bedrooms upstairs are a bit tricky but we quickly got used to them. This home had all the amenities we look for in a Block Island vacation. An outdoor shower, private yard, pet friendly, and a big kitchen so we can all cook and eat together. The owners are quick to respond by email or text. We will be back again for sure.

Beautiful rustic cottage experience

  • 5 of 5

We had such a lovely time here. It's an adorable little cottage built partially in the 1700s and then built onto I think in the 1800s, and was a great home base for our trip. As note, the stairs are indeed very steep, but we quickly got the hang of them.

The property itself is beautiful, with a great big yard, and a nice area to sit at the end of the day with a glass of wine or in the evening to stargaze. You'll feel like you are a million miles away from the rest of the world. The outdoor shower was fantastic too. And we loved the location near Clayhead Trail.

While here, we felt like we had stepped back in time -- and we absolutely loved it. If you like fancy places with modern conveniences this is not the place for you. But if you cherish unique experiences, enjoy rustic charm, and really want to get away from the modern world for a bit, you will love it!

Susan and Chris were great hosts, and very helpful both while we were planning our trip and while we were there. We will definitely be back!

Private and quiet

  • 4 of 5

We love Block Island but can definitely need to get away from the throng when in the peak of season. This house was the perfect, private getaway. Front lawn was perfect for badminton and the old farmhouse charm made for a really relaxing week. The proximity to the beautiful Claybead Trail and the bluffs was exceptional. Short walk to the beach was the cherry on the sundae. Q

Great trip!

  • 4 of 5

We had a really nice, quiet, relaxing fall weekend. The old country house had all we needed for our annual trip to the island. We spent our time relaxing and playing with our son on the great front lawn and walking down to the secluded beach. We will definitely be coming back again.
