About this property

Ideal location to explore historic Strathalbyn, Wineries, good food and scenery

Set in over an acre of gardens on the banks of the river Angas sit our heritage listed C1860 bluestone restored cottages.

The Gasworks once provided the gas for the town of Strathalbyn until it ceased production in 1917 and is now beautifully converted to accommodation for its owners and guests in our lovingly restored private fully self contained cottages.

The Manager Cottage as its name suggests was once the home to the Manager and his family that lived on site to maintain and run the factory but is now a spacious and romantic period cottage with two sleeping areas, both beds are queen sized and have electric blankets, one bedroom is adjoining the lounge. The second bed is a romantic four poster queen bed and occupies its own room with own access to the bathroom. The bathroom has two way access and consists of large corner luxury 2 person spa and walk in shower, WC and wash hand basin, there is also a heat/light/fan unit. The cottage has a well equipped kitchen with four burner gas cooktop (please note there is no oven but there is an air fryer), a bar fridge with a freezer compartment, a microwave, kettle and toaster and a coffee pod machine. Heating/cooling is provided by a reverse cycle air conditioner in both bedroom areas and a flame effect electric heater in the lounge area. A comfortable lounge with large screen TV with built in DVD player and a sound bar with blue tooth connectivity so you can connect to your phone and play your own music. As an added bonus there is a peaceful sunroom with views over your own private walled garden and beyond down to the river. Take a stroll around our beautiful landscaped gardens that have won seven years in a row Best Business Garden and in 2019 also won the overall Grand Champion Garden across all garden catorgies. Maybe enjoy a picnic on the lawns down by the River.

Pets welcome inside but not on the furniture/beds, please call to advise you are bringing your fur baby. A fee of $40 applies, payable direct . Dogs must be on a leash when in gardens and not left alone in the cottages. We have a secure fenced area beneath the cottage for when you need to leave your dog to go out.

Choose to cook breakfast in your own kitchen with the ample provisions we've provided for your first two days free of charge or if you prefer for an additional cost of $15 per breakfast paid direct, order the full Gasworks English style breakfast cooked for you and delivered to your cottage at a time of your choosing. On sunny days maybe you would prefer to enjoy it on our vine covered terrace overlooking the gardens.

We have a large range of DVDs to loan free of charge as well as books and magazines. NBN internet for free is available in all our cottages.

A launderette is conveniently 200 metres away across the road.

We are situated in the beautiful historic town of Strathalbyn, the southern end of High Street, just a short stroll from the town centre with its Antique shops, Heritage railway, Motor Museum and many dining options, Local wineries and a golf course are within a 10/15 minute drive. Beautiful beaches at Goolwa, Port Elliot and Victor Harbour are an easy short drive away 30/40 mins.

Beautiful gardens
We really enjoyed our stay at the Gasworks, with beautiful gardens and a creek to walk next to. Very clean accommodation that was presented beautifully both inside the cottage and out. Would recommend to others.

Charming Cottage
Lovely cottage in beautiful Strathalbyn. Very nicely furnished. Great range of goodies provided - coffee, tea, biscuits, bacon and eggs for breakfast etc. - all of which were great-fully accepted. Hosts were very friendly. Great location close to the centre of town.

We both had corporate jobs in Melbourne and decided do have a tree change, gave up our jobs in Interior design and my husband managing in IT. Our children were grown and moved out and it was time to find something we enjoyed and gave us a more simple lifestyle; We enjoy gardening and lavish attention on our just over an acre of landscaped gardens. We also enjoy good wine and food and boy did we pick the right town. Strathalbyn has welcomed us with open arms and we enjoy the community and friendship we have found, needless to stay we are happy with our choices and hope during your short time with us you will experience the beauty and friendliness that embodies this town.

Why they chose this property

We spent a long time looking for that special place to run our accommodation. It had to be close to a town, walking distance to places to eat, coffee shops and hopefully a nice pub. We wanted something that had an historic background or something special about it and finally it had to be in a place people would want to visit. The Gasworks ticked all our boxes and it was love at first site. We intend to leave it better than we found it as we consider ourselves more caretakers than owners as this piece of history belongs to the town as well as us.

What makes this property unique

Built in C1890 The Gasworks was created out of the local Bluestone and along with its lovingly restored cottages the walkways/walls around the garden are also of this beautiful stone, we love the curve of the roof and its high ceilings. Location on the banks of the pretty River Angas is also a beautiful bonus. The gardens abound with birds and beautiful blooms, we find it the perfect haven and hope you do too. Shops, pubs and eateries are just a short stroll away.
