About Pam and David

I grew up on the east coast with summers on the NJ and Maryland shores. I always wanted to move west and ultimately ended up in Maui with my first real job out of college, University of Pittsburgh, go Steelers! Work took me to Palm Springs and later LA but I vowed that I would move back to the islands. Then a good friend had her amazing wedding on Kauai and I was hooked, committing to following my dream. Kauai is it for us! I am a dreamer, a runner and outdoor enthusiast. My goal is to hike all of Kauai and make the island my family's permanent home over time. I can feel it!! I have two boys, husband David and a little puppy dog Lucy. My only challenge is that I hate to leave her on my trips to the island and it probably limits me at times, I love her! (and of course my boys and husband! :) ) We are a total soccer family and support our kids in every way. Life is good!!!

Pam and David purchased this condo in 2012

Why Pam and David chose Poipu

Poipu has always been our dream destination to enjoy with family and friends. It is so quiet and convenient to everything that Kauai has to offer. The location works on so many levels. It is conveniently located in the center of a beautiful residential community. Air conditioning is not required most days due to the trade winds and the units angle to the mountains and strong airflow. The pool often feels like its our very own pool, so quiet, convenient and uninhabited! We get a great run/walk in the morning as the sun rises, taking in the cliffs of the Poipu Shores. This investment is important only if we can share it with our friends and family. We look forward to the day that our kids get married and we can bring the extended family and friends and fill the condo, one day retiring and spending our senior years on the island. It is our very favorite island.

What makes this condo unique

The large and spacious non smoking Poipu condo with great trade winds and mountain views is located in the heart of Poipu Kai Resort with access to two swimming pools, one right outside your doorstep. We fell in love with this unit because of its location, spaciousness and lanai with amazing views and trade winds. You really can never get enough of that view! We fell in love with Makanui after looking at second homes because the buildings have a lot of charm and it feels much more residential than a commercial area. Over time it has far exceeded my expectations. I love it more and more and miss it when I cannot get to the island every few months.

Guestbook comments from the manager

Perfect place to relax and unwind. Pool was ours, very quiet felt more residential than touristy even thought we were in one of the most beautiful places in the world. Easy walking distant to beaches, restaurants and shopping. Great stay!!!

Really nice condo with a good location

  • 5 of 5

This is a great condo. Clean and is in a good location. You can walk to the beach but would go ahead and do the short drive because you bring a lot of stuff to the beach. They had snorkeling gear and body boards which is great. I would highly recommend this condo.

Everything we dreamed of!

  • 5 of 5

What a wonderful experience! Our family of four was comfortable in this cozy condo. It had everything we needed, from kitchen gadgets (we used the blender a lot!) to beach toys. The location was walking distance to Poipu and Shipwreck beaches, and close enough to Poipu and Koloa to make meals easy. We encountered a few breezy days, but the nest was snug enough to enjoy listening to the wind. It was easy to check in and out, and the condo was exceptionally clean. Thank you for an amazing stay!

Awesome Week at Poipu Kai Makanui

  • 5 of 5

My family, including two pool loving grandchildren (ages 5 and 8), spent a delightful week in Poipu. In addition to attending a family wedding, we loved that we were in walking distance of Brenneke's Beach(awesome boogie boarding) and Deli (good coffee and pastry in the early AM), Poipu Beach (excellent snorkeling for kids and grownups, as well as watching at least 6 sea turtles riding the waves and checking out monk seals dozing). We followed the walkway to the Hyatt, Shipwreck Beach, and on to the Maha'ulepu Lithified Cliffs.

Pam was available via email and phone to answer questions before we arrived and to give us directions when we arrived in the dark. We loved the breezes that kept us cool all night, though the ceiling fans were also wonderful. We had a bit of trouble with the fan/light switches, but the easterly breezes made for easy sleeping (never did get the living room fan to work, but it didn't matter). Poipu is humid and the sand and soil tended to collect in the screens, but a quick swipe with a towel made for better views of the pool from the downstairs bedroom. The washer and dryer were essential and well used, as were all the extra towels. Preparing many meals was easy in the efficient kitchen that was well supplied. Shopping at the Big Save in Koloa and Ishihara Market(loved the poke') in Waimea was fun and tasty.

We loved being on the 2nd floor right above the pool. Pool hours were 8am-10pm, perfect for the kids and the adults. One day we gawked at Waimea Canyon from the lookouts, then hiked to Waipo'o Falls( definitely a must). The adults continued on to hike the Awa-awapuhi Trail to the Napali Coast(awesome if you have the time) while the kids and I explored the swinging bridge in Hanapepe and stopped for Shave Ice in Koloa and Puka Dogs and Tacos at the Poipu Shopping Village before hitting the pool before bed! The Maze at the Kauai Coffee Company after a Kaleheo Café breakfast was a great morning adventure before an afternoon at Poipu Beach. Loved the Hula Pie at Keoki's and Macadamia ice cream at Lappert's.

This was a perfect place for us to spend time in your little slice of paradise. We definitely will recommend it to friends, and hope to return one day. Mahalo!

Poipu - February 2016

  • 4 of 5

Overall, we enjoyed our stay. The property has lots of air from the mountain flowing so you have always a breeze. The kitchen is very well equipped so food can be easily prepared at home. Beds are very comfortable and the master bedroom has a good entertainment system with Netflix available.

We advise the owner to make a better description of the directions to the property. We had a little bit of a problem finding it for the first time and there are no people around to ask for direction.

If you are a swimmer, the best beach to use is Salt Pond Beach. It is a 20 minutes drive, but it is worthwhile. There are closer beaches around for snorkeling and shallow water for babies, but not very good for swimmers. There are little markets close to the property, with restaurants and shops, which are fun to visit.

Aloha & welcome to Makanui Unit #522 in building 5 @ Poipu Kai Resort on Kauai's sunny south end. This well appointed 2-bedroom, 2-bathroom two story condo features an open concept first floor with an upgraded kitchen, stainless steel appliances, beautiful wood cabinetry and porcelain tile floors in both the kitchen and baths.

The oversized master bedroom is located on the second floor (third of the building) and offers a fantastic Kauai mountain view and amazing island trade winds. It features a king-size bed, 40' HD Smart TV and a large private bathroom with extended counter space and bathtub/shower. The spacious Poipu guest bedroom is located on the main floor, and provides both a double and twin beds. It has an adjoining oversized bathroom with shower unit.

A great Poipu trade wind/breeze travels from the nearby mountains and circulates throughout this spacious unit to keep it cool and cozy throughout the year. Enjoy your favorite beverage & novel while sitting outside on the oversized private lanai; or relax, bask in the sun amid the peaceful garden and take in the tropical breeze and garden/mountain view.

The open kitchen is fully equipped including a coffee maker, blender and toaster. You can make pizza, spaghetti, bake cookies and a lot more. There is a full-sized washer and dryer in the unit for your convenience.

Inside the condo, we have a closet that stores beach chairs, a beach umbrella and, of course, beach towels. Feel free to use any of them - we simply want to make your stay as comfortable and convenient as possible.

The Poipu Kai resort is surrounded by lush gardens, offering peace and privacy. Two gas grill are available for your use just a few steps from the condo. The tropical walking paths throughout the resort are beautifully landscaped and lit for romantic evening strolls.

If you like to play tennis, Poipu Kai has 8 full tennis courts that you can reserve for a small fee. For the golfers, Poipu Bay Golf (home of the PGA Grand Slam from 1994-2006) is less than a half mile from our doorstep.

There is a well manicured walkway from the condo both to the east and west to some of the world's best beaches. The beaches are a 5- 7 minute casual walk. Activities such as snorkeling, open-water swimming, body-surfing, kayaking, and surfing are offered at Brennecke's, Shipwrecks and Poipu Beach. Poipu Beach has a children's playground and a wonderful, calm and shallow beach suitable for younger children (Keiki Beach). Poipu Beach is rated as one of the world's best, and has lifeguards on duty everyday for your safety. Poipu Beach has some of the best snorkeling within several feet by just walking into the water. Sea turtles and sea lions are often ashore in knee deep in the water. Dolphins can often be easily seen from the beachfront. Our favorite beach is Brenneckes and Poipu for a fun afternoon. Taking a break at Brenneckes Restaurant and Bar for lunch, or later Marriott's Pool Bar for Happy Hour are some of our favorite "go to" , 'don't miss' things to do.

There are endless hiking trails available. Head east past the Grand Hyatt Resort, past Shipwrecks beach for groomed trails and beautiful scenery at the cliffs, all within walking distance of the condo. Watch dare devils jump Shipwreck on any given day. Slightly east of that are horse stables offering ocean front trails and a great guided tour. Or golf at one of the PGA's stop in previous years. Check out their proshop for some great apparel or check out the Hyatt's Spa for a great day. We highly recommend it, pricey but worth a full day with lap pool, jacuzzi access.

As residents of Makanui, you have access to two pools. The Makanui pool is right outside your front door. The pool area has both sunny and shady areas, and is a great place to relax with friends and family. The Poipu Kai resort pool and hot tub is also available for you to use. Take the garden path west towards Poipu Beach and find the resort pool, above the tennis courts.

And at the end of your fun-filled day, simply sit back, put your feet up and relax in our comfortable furnishings. Watch your favorite US shows on the flat screen TV or surf the internet.

Within walking distance you can dine at Brennecke's Beach Broiler, Kalapaki Joe's (sports bar) or grab a quick bite from Brennecke's deli. The Grand Hyatt Hotel houses 5 restaurants & Stevenson's Library offers live music nightly or enjoy their torch lighting ceremonies and hula nights.

There are amazing walking trails along the coast and terrific paths to run, all safe and convenient.

There is a BBQ on the grounds with all the necessary utensils in the kitchen. Stop by Kauai's Costco in Lihue to stock up for the week. You must have a membership card but its worth it. Otherwise the Big Save Market is in Old Koloa for more convenient shopping needs.

Enjoy your stay. It is an amazing island and we are so excited to be sharing our slice of heaven with you. Mahalo
