Overview

About the property

Stylish 2 Bedroom, One Bath With Newly Expanded Kitchen, Fenced Yard and Firepit

Enjoy the Nation's Capitol while staying in a hip family, dog, and gay friendly neighborhood close-by that is a destination in and of itself. This charming townhouse in the great Del Ray neighborhood of Alexandria has all you need to enjoy a relaxing getaway. Many restaurants and trendy shops are right outside the door. Walk to local Del Ray Farmer's Market, several coffee shops, sushi, pizza, Italian, Ethiopian, French, Mexican/Salvadoran, bbq, awesome burgers, amazing frozen custard, and organic/health food cafe. Lots of places have outdoor seating. Fantastic cheese shop/restaurant and local butcher. Incredible yoga/Pilates studio with hot yoga called Mind the Mat is only a few blocks away. Also only a few blocks away is a Capital BikeShare bike rental, as well as a co-op bike shop. Walk to dog park, CVS, grocery store, YMCA, bike/walking trail that goes all the way to Mt. Vernon Estate in one direction and Washington, DC in the other and connects to miles of other trails. Close to Historic Old Town (1.5 miles) with even more boutique shops and restaurants, and an amazing Farmer's Market held at the same place it was back in George Washington's day. Paddle board and kayaking opportunities on the Potomac. Walking distance (1 mile) to the Metro. Two bedrooms (one queen and one full) and one bathroom upstairs. The room with the full size bed does not have a closet, but there is ample hanging space in the other bedroom and there is a hook on the back of the door. Queen air mattress if needed. Fully equipped eat-in and open-floor plan gourmet kitchen with granite counter tops, good knives and cookware. Beautifully landscaped, fenced back yard with lovely lighting and firepit. Street parking always available either right in front or within a few spaces. This is a duplex with a young family (two kids) next door--not a place for partiers or late-nighters. Sorry but NO SMOKING anywhere on the property (even outside---it bothers the neighbors). Sorry, no long-term bookings available.

See the DIY Del Ray blog post about the home and search for Maria and kitchen. Del Ray's slogan is 'Where main street still exists." Its a very hip, friendly, walkable community. Lots of dogs and strollers! Also very gay-friendly. Along Mt. Vernon Avenue (2 blocks away) you will find a plethora of restaurants, coffee shops, and boutique shops. There are many options for outdoor dining. There is even an adults only sushi restaurant (as well as one that is not so selective!).

Bring home nice meats at the local butcher shop or fancy cheese from the local gourmet cheese shop. A lively farmer's market from May through October. Walking distance to small CVS. One mile to metro station with easy access to Washington, D.C. and all that city has to offer. Bring your bikes or running shoes and hit the Mount Vernon Trail along the Potomac River, which connects with hundreds of miles of other trails. The trail is about 1 mile from the house. The Mount Vernon Trail is a big favorite of area cyclists. The trail offers wonderful views of the Potomac and DC monuments. There are also several points-of-interest along the way, including George Washington's home at Mount Vernon, Old Town Alexandria, Arlington National Cemetery, and the local's favorite Gravelly Point (at the north end of National Airport's main runway).

Old Town, Alexandria, a lovely historic area with great shops and restaurants, is only about a mile away. There is a really large farmer's market there in the summer. Take a ghost tour, or a river cruise, or just wander about some of the side streets to see some lovely historic homes.

If you like yoga or pilates, there is a great studio a couple of blocks away called Mind the Mat. One studio has all hot classes (not Bikram). There are lots of classes from which to choose.

Of course there is then all of Washington, DC to explore, just a 20 minute drive (non-rush hour) or a 25 minute Metro ride. All the museums and monuments are free! The National Zoo is a favorite for families as well.

So much to do and explore!
