About this property

Charming Holualoa Ranching-Era Estate near Kailua and Keauhou. Away from it all!

Gracious comforts of yesteryears and featured in the coffee table book, The Hawaiian House Now, the home is an historic 1895 structure, modified in the 1940s. Retaining the charm of old Hawaii with architecture and furnishings of the day, while satisfying the needs and aesthetic of today's lifestyle, you'll be captivated by its relaxed atmosphere and convenience being close to all of Kona's offerings.

Panoramic views of the ocean, Kona coast, tree canopy, landscaped yard, and surrounding pastures will amaze. The cool 1,200' elevation of Holualoa, the open lanais, spacious bedrooms, and a well-appointed kitchen are sure to please. The rural feeling of Hale Akala and the large established yard with old plantings of avocado, ulu (breadfruit,) fig, starfruit (carambola,) dragon fruit, and banana is guaranteed to take you away from life's stresses and please the senses.

Four bedrooms to choose from, of which three have their own private en suite. The fourth bedroom, with a queen-sized bed, is on the lower level of the home and adjacent to the TV/sitting room. Three sets of French doors extend to a terraced area in the yard, providing the room beautiful light. The middle (and main-floor) level consists of kitchen, dining, living room, two lanais, and two bedrooms with queen-sized beds. Upper-level master-suite has a king-sized bed, two window seats, single sleigh bed and pull out twin ottoman to sleep up to four adults in beds. The two wide window seats can sleep a young child. The sleigh day-bed area is just outside a door and separate from the master bedroom. In total, one king, three queens, and one single will accommodate ELEVEN people in beds the home's base rate is upon NINE guests. Extra guests will be charged a $50 per person, nightly. Two ottoman twin pull out options for overflow sleep two more and the window seats allow for two children more. Lower floor accesses the yard and outdoor cooking terrace via stairs from the kitchen as well as from the ocean-side lanai.

Separately rentable, a charming 1940-era guest cottage with a screened-in lanai, galley kitchen (toaster, microwave, electric kettle, fridge) and shower bath, privately situated across the driveway, sleeps two in a queen bed, allowing larger parties to use the entire property. As it is a separate booking, please scroll down the page to Owner Information to view this additional VRBO listing, #643478. Separate rates apply.

Take a leisurely stroll through the yard and grounds which includes a sixty year old coffee orchard to the south. The family's 38 pound Sivetz air-roaster is operated in the roast hale (house in Hawaiian) on property in the outbuilding in large yard to the north of the home. Schedule yourselves to see a roast occur and take home fresh 100% Kona coffee to friends and family. This same expansive yard to the north is super for bocce, throwing a football or frisbee. Sitting on the lawn chairs to take in a sunset spectacle is a favorite pass-time and will delight star-gazers, daydreamers, and cloud watchers. Gas BBQ in carport outside the kitchen door. A comfortable seating area on terrace below the kitchen has a charcoal BBQ and a teak dining set, certain to entertain the outdoor dining enthusiast.

Two friendly dogs and a social cat live on the property and will greet you and say hello on many occasions as you come and go.

**Please consider NOT purchasing single-use water bottles. The kitchen island's sink fixture is filtered water. In addition, our rain fed aquifer lens-sourced Hawaii county water is treated, safe to drink, and delicious! Please consider bringing your beverage flasks and using them while visiting the island! We all need to use less plastic! Thank you.

Lovely house with everything we needed
We found everything we needed for four adults and four kids at Lisa’s house, from tons of beach toys and towels to a welcome bag of coffee, plus there was plenty of space ( actually ended up with a whole bedroom to spare). The house absolutely lives up to the pictures and Lisa was easy to reach for any minor issues or questions that came up. The kids loved playing in the giant field outside, and the grown-ups loved drinking coffee looking out the giant picture windows. the house really feels welcoming and like a home. The drive up the mountain was quick, grocery store was convenient, and overall we were extremely happy with our stay.

Fantastic Big Island Bungalow
Fabulous home. Plenty of room for our group of 8 adults. Better than the pictures and description online. Fully stocked kitchen and bathrooms. 3 large bedrooms and 3 full bathrooms. Comfortable beds. Beautifully decorated, art covering the walls, lovely vintage furniture. Large living room and dining rooms which we barely used. Spent most of our time in the spacious kitchen and charming lanai. We were there in January, so Hawaii is cooler, but rooms were comfortable during the day and cool at night. Conveniently located near everything in Kona, but in a nice residential neighborhood, with view of the ocean. Lisa was easy to deal with.I could go on, but just a wonderful home. It's an older home, but well maintained. Roosters do crow starting early in the AM.Would definitely stay there again.Everyone in our group loved the house.

Aloha! I'm Lisa, Hawaii-born (raised in Honolulu and Hilo) and have lived on this property for thirty-seven years, raising four children with my husband, Christian. I love to share my culture, our Island stories and history with all. I cherish my morning coffee, love food, the ocean, beach combing, engaging with people, yard work, and happy dogs!

Why they chose this property

Hale Akala is a special piece of Kona. Built in 1895 by Manuel Silveira Goularte, a Portuguese rancher who raised his thirteen children here. It was utilized by cowboys of the neighboring Greenwell family's Palani Ranch, to re-supply and feed ranch-hands in the 1920 and 30s. It was abandoned and left to the elements before WWII, eventually being purchased by Christian's grandparents, William and Margaret of Honolulu, in 1945. Wanting to retire to Kona (where Margaret's great-grandparents, Reverend Asa and Lucy Thurston--part of the company of first Christian missionaries to the Islands who arrived in Kailua-Kona (the seat of Hawaii's ruling Kamehameha reign) in 1820 and lived until the 1860s) they chose the cool uplands of Holualoa. Hale Akala has been in the family for four generations. A few cattle roam the surrounding acres of pasture and you'll hear an occasional bull bellowing from nearby Palani Ranch, in the quiet evening hours.

What makes this property unique

The spacious nature of the property, old established landscaping, dry-stack rock walls (a ranching heritage feature here in Kona,) pathways, fruit trees, flower beds, along with the home's architectural appeal will make you feel held and comforted.
