Beautiful 13/17 Bed Cottage overlooking Galway Bay and the Burren National Park

Bedrooms 6
Space 3,500 sq ft
Property type farmhouse
Minimum Stay 3 - 7 nights

About the property

A stunning spacious farmhouse cottage; great for families of all ages.

Bayfield is a spacious, lovingly restored farmhouse with the most beautiful views over Galway Bay and the mountains of the Burren National Park. It is situated on one of the loveliest sections of the 'Wild Atlantic Way' and is a five minute walk to the local sandy beach that leads onto the Flaggy Shore. See the MAXXBAYFIELD website for a feel of the place.

Bayfield sleeps 12 adults and has a cot for a child. If you are a larger group please ask about taking the extra room in the house which sleeps a further 4. It is also a perfect setting for smaller numbers and we often have couples staying.

Bayfield is a very chilled place to be on holiday and sits in its own three acres of lawns, rough gardens and farmed land which makes it incredibly peaceful. 5 minutes walk away is Newquay Hamlet with one of the best pubs in Ireland serving superb sea food. The house is furnished and used as a family holiday home so has everything you need and is much much more than than just a place to stay.

As well as being very spacious it is also cosy and you will feel at home almost as soon as you walk in the door whether there are two of you or a crowd. There are three en-suite king sized doubles, one twin-room and one double/bunk-room (with a double bed plus a bunk bed). A cot is also available on request. From September 2018 there will be an additional room with a king sized bed and a sofa bed which sleeps 4 - ask for details if you are a larger group. All of the rooms are spacious, comfortable and airy as is the rest of the house. The generously sized kitchen is modern and well equipped and has a very large dining table that is great for big dinners. There are three sitting rooms; the largest has big comfortable sofas, an open fire and loads of great DVDs to watch; the second overlooks the orchard with views down to the water in one direction and up to the mountains of the Burren in the other; and the third is a reading balcony that sits just one person very comfortably and looks out over the fields out to Galway Bay - an ideal place to chill out with a cup of tea / glass of wine and a good book! The two larger sitting rooms are sound proofed from the main house so ideal for noisy kids in the morning or noisy adults in the evening.

Bayfield is in the heart of the Burren National Park. The surrounding area is outstandingly beautiful and while being a perfect place to relax and do nothing the area offers a huge amount of activities and things to see and do. The near by sandy beach leads onto the stunning Flaggy Shore with a three mile coastal road that is probably one of the best strolls ever. The location is very rural with cows and sheep grazing the fields surrounding the house. In addition to it being so rural New Quay also benefits from having the excellent seafood restaurant 'Linnane's' (800 meters from the house) and the Russell Art Gallery which serves great Tea, Coffee, Wine and Prosecco (400 meters from the house). It’s a ten/15 minute drive to the bustling coastal villages of Kinvara and Ballyvaughan. Also within easy reach by road or water taxi is the lively coastal town of Galway famed for its Oyster Festival, the Galway Races and the great music played in its pubs. There are superb walks right from the front door of Bayfield which are great for any level of fitness ranging from the walk around the coast to hiking in the Burren hills. County Clare is renowned for being one of the best places in Ireland for golf and the courses of Lahinch, Gort and Drumoland are nearby. The surfing mecca of Lahinch is a short drive away as are the Cliffs of Moher which along with the Aran Islands are probably the most striking sites to see in Ireland. The Aran Islands are easy to get to from Bayfield by getting one of the regular ferries from Doolin which is about 35 minutes drive away.

Due to the makeup of the landscape the area is famed for its flora and fauna which blossom in early spring. For historians there is the local history of the ring forts and the Neolithic tombs as well as some beautiful castles and churches to be seen. If you have kids there is a great amount for them to do in the area. It is a great place!

Bayfield is surrounded by working farmland and the field in front of the house is grazed by beautiful Limousin cows (these can be taken out by asking the farmer). There is a large lawned orchard at the back of the house which is a lovely place to be on a sunny day with a very comfortable garden room leading onto it. The BBQ overlooks the fields and trees down to the water and there is an outside terrace at the end of the garden with 360 views of the Burren.

Cars are easy to hire from the airports (Shannon being the closest). If you need group transport when at the house 'Burren Coaches' are nearby and can accommodate any size of group. Ask for details.

About Max

I live with my wife Beatrice and our daughter in London and split our holiday time between staying in Bayfield and going over to Rome where Beatrice is from. For us these are the two of the most Beautiful places in the world!

Bayfield has been in the family for generations and I have been coming over with my parents, brothers and sisters since I was a child and have been playing in the fields around Bayfield and swimming from the Flaggy Shore since I can remember.

When my mother took the house over from my Great Uncle Edward it was falling into disrepair and had cows using it as a shelter. The thatched roof had fallen in and all the doors and windows had rotted away. My mother with help from the rest of the family restored and extended the house to make it what it is now and we love it.

We love the walks, the pubs, the food, the people and the weather whatever the season throws at us. As well as summer we often spend Christmas and New Year in Ireland and find it as lovely then as it is in the summer. On Christmas Day about 100 people from the area go for a morning swim and I have joined them for the last three years and plan to do many more.

I am a keen sailor and have sailed and done many regattas on Galway Bay and from other coastal towns along the Wild Atlantic Way. Galway Bay in particular is one of the most beautiful places I have ever sailed - especially when taking part in the Galway to Aran Islands Race.

Have a great time if you are staying at Bayfield. Read the tips on the "Read if staying" page on the maxxbayfield website, and be sure to let us know if you had a good time.

Many thanks for choosing to stay!

Max, Beatrice, Aurelia and Pancia

Max purchased this farmhouse in 1860

Why Max chose New Quay

Bayfield was built by our Great Great Grandfather over a hundred and fifty years ago and has been in the family ever since. Originally a farmhouse it has now been lovingly and beautifully restored and we are lucky enough to be able to use it as a holiday home and offer it to others to enjoy as well.

Our Great Uncle Edward Hynes, the renowned artist who drew for several American and European magazines lived at the house and what is now the main sitting room was his studio for many years. You will see many copies of his pictures and cartoons around the house.

We grew up visiting Bayfield for holidays and now think of it as part of the family. We love the walking, the pubs, the views and the people on the West Coast and come back to visit whenever we can.

What makes this farmhouse unique

The house, the rooms and the gardens are all extremely spacious. Multiple sitting areas each with its own charm means that even with a full house there is plenty of space. Something that people really appreciate about Bayfield is that the main living/sitting room is in an adjoining building connected by a small hallway which means that adults can stay up later without waking sleeping children. (Likewise in the morning children can play in the living room if they wake up early!).

The house is surrounded by beautiful fields with grazing horses, cows and sheep. Kids love it but I think adults appreciate it even more.

The sea is so close that you can walk down to the beach with your cup of coffee and it will still be warm when you get there. We often do this!

No matter what the weather it is a lovely place to be. Have a look at which has more pictures and more information.

Home Away From Home

  • 5 of 5

Second stay at Bayfield with extended family ( 8 of us ) and still one of our favorite places in Ireland. Very affordable for a larger group with 5 spacious bedrooms and 4 baths. Well appointed kitchen so cooking was enjoyable and the large farmhouse table there became our central gathering place. Evenings were spent in the comfortable living room with a nice fire and good selection of movies. The grounds are beautiful with a charming raised picnic area overlooking views of the distant hills and glimpses of the sea. An enclosed yard gave our little 3 and 5 year olds the freedom to come and go on their own and a safe area to play. Watching the sun rise from the glassed in sun porch was a treat. A lovely rural area just a very short stroll from the Flaggy Shore and well located for day trips to the many enchantments of the Burren and major sights such as the Cliffs of Moher, golf, Aran Island ferries, Ailwee Bird Sanctuary and Caves, Galway, Ennis, a lovely art gallery-coffee shop and restaurant just steps away and smaller charming villages. We hope to return again to our Irish home away from home.

A little bit of heaven......

  • 5 of 5

Bayfield House..... A little bit of heaven. Returning to this home every day after roaming Ireland made our visit much more enjoyable. The house, the yards, the great location were all wonderful. We spent some days just enjoying the area on foot, exploring Flaggy Beach, Martello's Tower, Linally's ice cream parlor, Linnane's pub, etc. Our family of 10 all loved the house and felt at home immediately. One night we had a sleepover of Irish cousins and the den and garden room were perfect extra bedrooms with their multiple sofas. I hope we can make it back to our New Quay home someday... soon.

Thanks, Bob and Janne Cahill, Granbury, TX. June 2017

Fantastic cottage

  • 5 of 5

The 8 of us (4 adults and 4 kids) stayed in Bayfield house for one Easter week holiday.

The house is all equipped, very pleasant and typical of Ireland cottage: prepared for our stay with bed linen and towels; kitchen is well equipped; living rooms are very confortable to enjoy time all together or alone; inside and outside, a lot of space allowed us to feel very comfortable.

Around, the Linnane's bar and restaurant offer a very good sea food and nice beers.

Next to the Linnanne's bar, it is possible to buy fresh sea food: lobsters, clamps, mussels, scallops, salmons..... just amazing!

We did our shopping in Kinvarra, 10 minutes driving from Bayfield house, open 7 days a week.

We recommend the Cliff of Moher, Galway's city, walks in Barna, O Grady's restaurant in Barna, Aughnanure's castle, and many other things, Ireland is fantastic!

There is an endless amount of stuff to do here! See maxxbayfield com for side ideas - The walks are top of the list for most people. The coastal walk offers different scenery every time you walk it due to the ever changing height of tide. At low tide the rock pools are great for foraging in for sea life and the local sandy beach extends out into Galway Bay. Quite often seals bask on the rocks of nearby inlets. The walks in the limestone covered hills that surround New Quay are also brilliant. There are easy walks and also some more challenging circuits that you won’t want to try unless you are fairly fit and take some provisions for. There are several horse riding stables in the area and quite often horse racing or point to point racing which is very popular in Ireland. The local villages of Kinvara and Ballyvaughan are great to visit and have superb pubs and restaurants. They often host festivals and regularly have live Irish music being played in one or other of the pubs. Further afield is Galway which is a lively and vibrant town that has year round live music in many of the bars. It has very very cool night life especially round the Quay side area and is a lovely town to walk around with a huge Cathedral and some lovely old Irish streets. Also within easy reach are the Aran Islands which can be accessed by a small ferry from Doolin (about an hour trip). The Islands are absolutely beautiful and great for walking on or hiring a bike and cycling around. Ferries from Doolin also go to the Cliffs of Moher which are as striking to see from the water as they are from the top of the cliffs. Having said how much there is to do around the area, Bayfield House and the tiny area of New Quay is somewhere that is great to stay and doing nothing in. There is the pub down the road and the Russel Gallery that does great food, wine and teas and coffees. You can buy freshly laid eggs and other basic groceries from local farmers. Staying in the house is a lovely thing to spend time doing either in the house itself or out in the garden taking in the views.
