About the property

Walk to the Beach, Shops, and Marina from this 4 BR, 2 BA Treasure

Guests love the location right in town where they can walk everywhere and love the fresh decor of The Schoolhouse Cottage!

Cherry blossoms bloom in May. Open for wine tasting weekends too. We are still open August 26-September 2 -- one of the most beautiful weeks of the season! The lake is warm and crowds are thin! Also see our openings in May and October for wine tasting weekends.

We are in an excellent location in the cute town of Suttons Bay; you can walk to the beach, the Marina, and all the boutiques and restaurants in town. Awesome ice cream shop just one block away! Near wineries, golf courses, hiking, tennis and biking trails.

We are right on the wine trail -- near Black Star Farms, L. Mawby, Ciccone, or head north to 45 North, Aurora, Boathouse, and Chateau Fontaine. All within 10 minutes from the Schoolhouse Cottage!

This stylish home features 4 bedrooms (King, 2 Queens, and Twins) plus sitting room with a pull-out sofa and 2 full baths. The Twins bedroom is between the sitting room and the upstairs Queen room.

The cottage has a large, open living and dining area and a well-equipped kitchen with plenty of room for your group to gather, relax and enjoy time together inside, or outside on the deck overlooking the perennial garden with pocket views of the bay.

We are still open April weekends, a few May weekends, June 3-10 and Aug 26-Sept 2!

My other house, the White Birch Cottage (VRBO #610555), 4 BR on Lake Leelanau, is still open June 24-July 1 and Aug 19-Aug 26.

Recent review of the Schoolhouse Cottage: "The whole experience was fantastic! The owner provided helpful information (shops, things to do, recommendations, etc.) and was she was so helpful and responsive before, during and after our stay! The house is charming, very clean, was large enough for my entire family, and was in the perfect location. The neighborhood is cute, quiet and the house is just steps away from ice cream and downtown fun! We really loved our stay and we highly recommend this home to others! It was all so perfect."

Walk to the beach, town, tennis, volleyball and basketball courts, biking trails, hiking trails, and a movie theater! Everything is within walking distance!

Suttons Bay, in the heart of the Leelanau Peninsula, is the perfect place to discover the pleasures of Leelanau County. Short scenic drive to Sleeping Bear Dunes, the wine trail, Traverse City, Leland, and Northport. Walk on endless Lake Michigan beaches, sail in Grand Traverse Bay, shop in the quaint towns of Leland and Glen Arbor, boat on Lake Leelanau, go wine tasting, spend a day in Traverse City - just 15 miles away, visit the Sleeping Bear Dunes or explore farther and see all of gorgeous Leelanau County.

Why Melissa Smith chose Suttons Bay

The Schoolhouse Cottage is a charming historic house which we really loved renovating. Suttons Bay feels like a resort. Reading and sun-bathing on the beach, sailing and kayaking in the bay, playing tennis, trying new restaurants, exploring cute shops, relaxing in cafes, everything you want to do is right there within a 5 minute walk.

What makes this house unique

The Schoolhouse Cottage has a generous open living and dining room which we love for entertaining friends. The street is quiet, yet very close to town. The outdoor patio is a favorite spot for early morning coffee as well as for long family dinners sharing summer memories!

The Schoolhouse cottage was perfect for our between Christmas holiday with my family. Weather was very cold and very snowy which enabled us to do everything we planned on. Skiing, sledding and skating and enjoying each other’s company in this wonderful cozy home. I cannot thank Melissa enough for all the great tips, referrals and ideas she gave to us during our stay. The Home included everything one might need and even more. We hope to return next year.

Charming get away in cute Suttons Bay

  • 5 of 5

Seven of us traveled from Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Michigan to Suttons Bay to celebrate my Mom's 80th birthday. We rented the old schoolhouse mainly because it had a first floor master and bath that would be great for my Mom to maneuver without having to go up stairs. The house was very charming, nicely decorated and very clean. It comfortably slept all of us. The mattresses were very good - not saggy and old like a lot of rentals. Everything in the cute town of Suttons Bay is literally just a short walk away. I would return for sure if I were headed back to this area. The only trouble we had at all was that none of us could make a connection to the internet. The owner provided a password but for some reason, the internet would not connect. It was a little snowy the weekend we were there so I don't know if that effected the connection or not... but we didn't mind! A few days of being unplugged was just what we needed!

Owner's Response: So glad you enjoyed the comfy mattresses. This has always been a key factor to us when we travel, so we have really good quality bedding at the Schoolhouse. Sorry about the internet, I checked with Charter and it's up and running now. Feel free to call me during your stay if you have any issues at all. Always happy to help!
