For a 3D video tour, please visit:

LAYER CAKE cabin is within walking distance to the Grand Canyon of the east coast, crown jewel of the public lands in this area. The cabin accommodates up to 4 guests comfortably with it’s 2 inviting bedrooms, a 2-sided wood-burning fireplace inside, a rock fireplace outside, amazing attention to detail and beautiful views everywhere you turn. Visitors in summer may enjoy community pool and tennis within a 10-minute walk.

This gorgeous, quiet and unforgettable cabin built with wormy chestnut timbers is a sweet dream retreat with every attention to detail. There's even a beautiful swimming pool hidden in the community that guests of Layer Cake may use.

The upstairs master offers breathtaking views make guests feel as if they are sleeping in a forest, while the downstairs master features a wood-burning fireplace, rocking chairs, and a lush 9-foot down-filled sofa with reading lamps.

The main sitting area of Layer Cake cabin features a wood-burning double-sided fireplace flanked by perfectly placed comfortable club chairs and ottoman (with reading lamps) ready for you to sink into with your favorite beverage -. A perfect place to enjoy your favorite glass of wine and intimate conversation, or a good read.

The kitchen is equipped using care and quality that we ourselves would appreciate (as we too, enjoy our time at the cabin). The kitchen is well-thought-out and features stone countertops, a range, refrigerator/freezer with ice maker, stainless preparation table/bar and barstools, a very large, deep stainless sink, dishwasher, disposal (switch is under the sink), drip coffee maker, coffee bean grinder, microwave oven and a toaster.

The dining area boasts an upholstered corner booth with natural wood table top (created by a local artisan using slice from a downed tree hundreds of years old) light by a lodge-inspired chandelier.

The exterior features a metal roof, and a wrap-around covered porch with Timberlake deck chairs (perfect for enjoying morning coffee, watching the sun rise up over the trees as the birds enjoy their breakfast), as well as a gorgeous custom slate patio with comfy Timberlake rockers and another wood-burning fireplace.

About Becky and Dave Roletter

Our family LOVES spending time at Layer Cake! We enjoy sharing this experience and the glowing reviews (over 28 and only 5-star since we've made it available for rent - less than 2 years ago), make it that much more wonderful to share!

We owe much of our positive experience and that of our renters to the efforts of the fabulous family that meticulously services our cabin, as we reside 2 hours east in Winston-Salem.

We LOVE to travel, and also consider home swapping an option.

What makes this cabin unique

I never get enough of being at Layer Cake. I don't know what I like best. Is it:

When I open my eyes in the morning, I feel fortunate to awaken in a bed surrounded by views of the woodlands, hearing only the sounds of nature...the breeze flowing through the surrounding tall trees and the birds singing.

It's a place to disconnect from everyday stresses and reconnect with friends, lovers, family...and best of all, yourself.

Snow Tubing at Haws Next or Jonas Ridge Tube Park?

When I smile at the decadence of watching the sun setting from the master bath slate and glass shower?

On a star-filled evening, sitting under the stars on the slate patio in front of the slate outdoor fireplace watching a roaring fire, sipping my favorite wine (Penfold's Bin 389) with special people (or even alone)?

Waking up early just to walk 5 minutes to the overlook to see the heavenly sunrise?

Reclining in the hammock chair on the wrap-around porch either napping or reading a book?

Reclining on the new 9-foot down-filled sofa with a great book while surrounded by windows that look out on the woodlands?

Enjoying a wood fire in the indoor double-sided wood fireplace in a comfy club chair and with my ottoman, my mini-tray table attached to the arm of the chair with a hot cup of tea, and a good book, or just great conversation with the one directly across from me in the matching club chair?

And that's at the cabin... the walking along tgravel and paved roads, the 5-minute walk to the overlook on Table Rock road, the hike to Sitting Bear, Upper Creek Falls, Table Rock, antiquing in Foscoe, kayaking Price Lake, and one of my all-time favorites - the Orchard at Altapass on the Blue Ridge Parkway near Spruce Pine for live Appalachian music, flat footing, locals, homemade cobbler, warm local folks and tourists. And every time I go back, I found something else to love. I hate to leave and wish I could retire!!!

Soothing, relaxing, perfect location for area

  • 5 of 5

We loved this amazing retreat! It is a very comfortable, well supplied, clean and cared for home located perfectly to access all the nearby attractions like Grandfather Mountain, Boone, Linville Caverns and some fantastic hiking trails as well. The property is tucked down a quiet drive with a secluded feel and has a wrap around deck leading to a relaxing fireplace and BBQ area underneath a tree- lined canopy that invites easy reflection of fun-filled days. The inside is cozy and relaxing with space to bond with others as well as places to retreat for quiet moments. The open floor plan allows kitchen duty to be a part of the group and the broad windows invite the character of the woods inside. Additionally, the owners are friendly and helpful and definitely ensure an enjoyable experience. We will definitely be repeat visitors!

Beautiful cabin! You won't be disappointed

  • 5 of 5

I couldn't find one thing to complain about with our stay. The location is excellent. We ski'd at Sugar Mountain and Beech Mountain. Sugar was only about a 35 minute drive and Beech about 45 minutes. You're on the mountain and in the woods but the drive out is not bad even if there is some in-climate weather. Every detail in the cabin is well thought out. We plan on coming back during Summer months to enjoy it again and do some hiking. Thank you for making our stay so enjoyable!

Perfect getaway with a clear weekend of the closest Moon under the stars with a nice fire

  • 5 of 5

Certainly this cabin lived up to its reviews as we were very impressed with the clean and well appointed little cabin. Just the right size and location was quiet and close to the parkway where we were able to quickly get to Blowing Rock for a nice day there on Saturday. We also were close to some great XMAS tree farms with good deals on trees.

Cozy and convenient!

  • 5 of 5

We (two couples all in their 30s) loved our stay here! It was the perfect location for a long weekend full of hiking and exploring!

We happened to get the first snow of the year while we were there and lost power in a wind storm, but Rebecca responded immediately, and we were able to get extra blankets and candles for the few hours the power was out. We especially loved the fireplace both during the storm and throughout our stay. It was the perfect setting for relaxing evenings after adventure-filled days.

The only potential negative was that the wi-fi didn't work unless only one of us was on our phone at a time. I didn't mind it, and I found disconnecting was welcome, but I would just be aware of this if you're trying to get any work done while on your trip.

Even though the cabin is small, they've done a wonderful job of maximizing the space, so we were all comfortable and never felt cramped. We've already recommended Layer Cake Cabin to some of our friends, and we'd definitely book again.

Near the "Grand Canyon of the East!" hiking (Grandfather Mountain, Table Rock trails, Sitting Bear and too many others to list), antiquing (Foscoe is a must), beer tasting at Blind Squirrel Brewery (Plumtree, NC), Wine tasting at Grandfather Vineyards (Foscoe), dining at Eat Crow (Foscoe), lunch at Christa's (daily-made yeast rolls in Pinola), (daily-made enormous cinnamon buns and sourdough loaves (check hours - Linville Mercantile and Bakery (Newland), biking (route I-181), driving the Blue Ridge Parkway to places such as Linn Cove Viaduct, Price Lake (wonderful walking trail, canoe/kayak/fishing lake with rentals available), and Moses Cone Arts Center with history, high-end crafts, and hiking trails), and one of my personal favorites May-October -- the Orchard at Altapass (near Spruce Pine) for friendly locals and tourists, live music, dancing, ice cream and apple pie. The cabin is also approximately 30 minutes from Boone and Blowing Rock (outlet shopping), and perfect for App State visits.
