VILLAGE OF JEMEZ SPRINGS: 30-min. drive south--restaurants, library (w/computers), skateboard track, bath house/spa--enjoy a mineral springs bath and massage; churches, art galleries, and more. Visit the historical Jemez Monument to see Indian ruins. The Jemez Springs Baptist Church holds an interdenominational service Sunday mornings from Memorial Day through Labor Day at the Jemez Falls campground amphitheater at 8 AM, 3 miles south on Hwy 4. Santa Fe is a 90-min. drive, with many museums and festivals, and the world-famous Georgia O'Keeffe Museum, open on Friday evenings from 5 to 7 PM.

OTHER THINGS TO SEE & AND DO:

 Majestic Valles Caldera Grande National Preserve, 8 mi. north, is a haven for photographers, hunters, nature lovers, hikers, X-C skiers, and mountain bikers. (Call 505-661-3333 for a ride to the backcountry) General -- call 866-382-5537. Event hotline: 505-569-6842. Check out their website for classes in photography. (You will receive an info document with information, too.)

 Bandelier National Monument, with ancient Indian ruins, 20 minutes north on Hwy 4.

 Downhill skiing at Parajito (rated in January 2014 as one of the best-kept secret places to ski!), just outside of Los Alamos.

 Jemez Falls & picnic area, 3 mi south.

 Several fishing sites along Hwy 4.

 Lots of trails—stop at Ranger Ofc north of Jemez Springs on your way up for info.

 Monthly 'Paint Your Vision' workshops are offered by local artists. Previous painting experience is not required. Learn technique from experts, and have fun. Art-viewing field trips are planned. Call Geraldine (575) 834-7918.

 Restaurant and a small store are 15 minutes south in La Cueva.

 Sightseeing 30-45 min. away in historical Los Alamos.

 There are many activities, or--you can do nothing.

INDIAN CULTURE: New Mexico is rich in culture and diversity. On the way from Albuquerque, stop at the Walatowa Visitor Center and Museum in the Red Rocks area, and eat Indian fry bread from one of the vendors (the Frito pies are delicious). Great photos of the Red Rocks, too. The Walatowa Convenience Store is your last opportunity to get gas when coming from the south; the next chance is in Los Alamos. Visit Soda Dam, north of the village. The Gilman Tunnels are at the 485 turnoff before you get to the village--the site for movies filmed in the Jemez.

WINTER TIME: Roads can be snow-packed and icy. You MUST have a 4WD vehicle. Arrive by 4 PM, when the sun has melted some of the ice, making it easier to get up the driveway. It gets dark by 5 PM in the mountains; no road lights; it is easy to veer off the road into a culvert. So, plan your arrival during daylight hours.

MEDICAL FACILITIES: Nearest is in Los Alamos; EMTs may respond from La Cueva 15 minutes away.

WHEELCHAIR ACCESSIBILITY: Special plywood ramp in the garage for wheelchair access through the interior kitchen door from garage. There are also rubber mats to put in the bathtubs for slip protection. The altitude may be an issue for those with heart or lung problems.

NEED MORE ROOM? Planning a family or group gathering and don't want to be separated but need a little extra room? Our next-door neighbor has space (VRBO listing #322935--Big Foot Cabin). It is a 2-minute walk there.

TRAVEL LOGISTICS: The cabin is a 1 3/4-hour drive from I-25 & Tramway Rd (about 2 hrs from ABQ airport). Once you leave the highway, you travel for nearly 2 miles up and down a dirt/gravel road that gets steep in places. A 4WD IS MANDATORY IN THE WINTER, recommended in the summer, as roads can be slippery after a rain. For security reasons, the exact address is not given out here.

MISCELLANEOUS:

o NM assesses a gross receipts tax on the rates and all fees.

o Minimum stay - 2 nights. Lower rates 8 days or longer.

o Maximum Occupancy - 6. Rates based on 4 people; extra for 2 more. Renter must stay in the house, be 25 or older (must provide names, sex and age of others in group). You may be asked to email a copy of your driver's license before the booking can be confirmed. A child is anyone age 17 and under.

NOTE: No camping on the property. Evidence of any camping will result in additional charges and your stay is shortened with no reimbursement.

o Check-in time 3:30 PM; check-out 10:30 AM.

o Marsha's Writing Retreat is located in a tranquil and quiet environment. This is not a party house. Guests appreciate the quiet nature of the surroundings.

o No pets (inside or outside) – owner is allergic to most animals.

o There is no trash pick-up for subdivision; guests must take all garbage/trash with them upon departure. Trash bags are provided.

o Please read the contract before confirming your reservation and ask questions. Directions and entry information sent before arrival.

o Military veterans receive a special rate over Veterans Day holiday (Nov 10-12)

o In winter, YOU NEED a 4WD. Roads cannot always be immediately plowed, and not until the snow reaches around 6 inches. Getting up icy hills can be a challenge, and chains/cables may be advised. Road plowing is not in the owner's control.

o Regardless of the season, sunscreen is a must in NM.

The cabin is the owner's writing retreat, a place to get away from it all—noise, hustle and bustle, and rat race of everyday living. The house is rustic in feel, eclectic in décor (some of it 1950s style), and cozy enough that you won't want to leave! Bring your camera, sunscreen, and binoculars!

This is a private home, not the same as a hotel; hence, there are rules and restrictions than you may not be used to.
