peaceful - relaxing

  • 5 of 5

Our party of 4 - family group - had a grand time from the first moment. The place was immaculate - comfortable - inviting - and the jacuzzi the best ever! We loved visiting historic Berkeley Springs and enjoyed a bath & massage in the hot springs resort - same waters where the young George Washington bathed. Comments my husband & son left in the guest book: "Thank you for a quiet and restful weekend in this lovely home and peaceful setting". "Exquisite porch - & hot tub on perfectly named 'Tranquil Lane'." I have to add that Marie, owner, was gracious & available and quick to respond to a couple queries.

Nice remote place to chill

  • 4 of 5

Nice place in what feels like the middle of nowhere. Hot tub and table tennis were great features, nearby creek was nice. The kitchen was well stocked with pots, pans and other kitchen utensils - very important for us. The fireplace and pellet stove are a bit tricky, but we eventually figured it out, same with the TV (there are 3 remotes).

A few things to keep in mind - the additional $100 cleaning fee was a surprise. While it is in the description, it's not in the place I'd look for fees, especially since there are already service fees, taxes, deposit, etc. Also, there are several pages of instructions, and several emails and attachments. All good, but a little cumbersome to read everything. Finally, if there are multiple parties arriving in separate cars - make sure to coordinate how to get into the "gated community". There is no cell reception, but a house phone and a gate phone. With our arrival at 11 PM at night it can be tricky to figure out. Sleepy people are not alert people.

We were able to contact the owner via the house phone for further clarifications - very nice touch. Can recommend staying here!

Quiet as quiet can be!

  • 4 of 5

Arrived to a quiet location that the only sound was made by a distant squirrel barking. The cabin was clean, water was hot, the hot tub was clean and many of the amenities we did not use. If anything wrong, it was impossible trying to figure how to work the tv's with remotes that do nothing. A nice stereo would be nice to play music.

Owner's Response: We are sorry you had issues with the remotes. If you had called we could have walked you through it or had housekeeping come. Sounds like you had a good time despite the TV issues.

Perfect cabin in the woods feel with plenty of extras!

  • 4 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay! We were particularly surprised at what a kick we got out of the ping pong. Fire pit was perfect! After we figured out the venting, the woodstove kept us nice and cozy. Only downside was discovering the extra $100 housekeeping fee in the check out instructions... That really should have been part of pricing up front not hidden in fine print

Awesome get away.

  • 5 of 5

Loved the overall experience. Listening to the cool breeze while sipping coffee on the screened in porch was heavenly. We roasted marshmallows (included) on the beautiful fire pit with plenty of seating. Fanatic get away if you want to recharge your batteries.

About Marie Olsen

Our weekend retreat has not been used much since our sons have gone to college. It is a relaxing getaway but since we are not using it we thought others might enjoy the peace and tranquility we have enjoyed over the past decade.

Marie Olsen purchased this cabin in 2006

Why Marie Olsen chose Great Cacapon

We spent years searching for the Nut House. We wanted to be close enough to DC that we could do a day trip. We picked River Ridge because of the river access, the community spirit and the easy access to America's original spa town, Berkeley Springs.

What makes this cabin unique

The Nut House offers the ability to have multiple families stay together. Also great for a guys or gals weekend away. We provide three kayaks for at the river for the exclusive use of our guests. The community, River Ridge, welcomes all of the seasons. The first weeks of Spring bring white clouds of Service Berry blossoms, followed closely by the vibrant red buds and dogwoods. Violets, blue bells, and phlox carpet the river banks and hillsides. Summer calls for swimming and boating along the scenic Cacapon River. The River Ridge park has boat racks, a bath house, and picnic tables for outdoor fun. In the fall, the oaks, maples, and hickories steal the show with the golden Paw Paws along the river persisting until the first snows. In Winter, snow blankets the hills while curls of wood smoke and roaming flocks of wild turkey provide a memorable backdrop for holiday gatherings.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Lots of space, good times were had by all. We loved the secluded hot tub in the back of the house. We look forward to staying at the Nut House again.

Berkeley Springs is an historic spa and art-filled town nestled in the West Virginia mountains only 90 minutes from the Washington/Baltimore metro area. It boasts warm mineral springs, world class dining, dozens of unique shops, full-service spas and more. Golf, hiking and swimming share the schedule with year 'round festivals, live music and theater.

Friendly people, welcoming mountains and a sense of place mark Berkeley Springs, West Virginia as a vacation getaway for all seasons and tastes.

Morgan County began its historic life as the playground of Thomas Lord Fairfax. Period letters and documents describe Fairfax's frequent visits to his spa on the edge of the wilderness. Along with many social gatherings, he soaked in the warm mineral waters of the springs and rode into the mountains. Fairfax was occasionally joined in these adventures by his friend and Virginia neighbor, George Washington. Today, Morgan County remains a favorite playground of folks along the East Coast. The area is blessed with wooded mountains and ridges, two rivers, several lakes and a wide selection of contemporary recreation activities for both individuals and families. Natural wonders abound in the area side-by-side with man-made recreation. As part of Morgan County's ecotourism, you can explore geology, birding, rare plants, hiking and the ecosystem of the Cacapon River on your own. Organized education opportunities are also available. Contact Travel Berkeley Springs at 1-800-447-8797 for special brochures on the Cacapon River and Ecotourism in Morgan County.

GOLF The 18-hole, 72-par championship golf course at Cacapon State Park was designed by Robert Trent Jones in the mid 1960s. Meticulously maintained, it is one of the region's most popular public courses, open for year 'round play, weather permitting. Carts, driving range, picturesque putting green, pro-shop, clubhouse and challenging play which includes deer as obstacles are all part of Cacapon's appeal. Cold Run Driving Range is open Thursday through Monday in season.

WINTER SPORTS Cross country skiing is a popular sport on the mountain trails of Cacapon State Park, and along the many back roads of the county. Bring your own equipment.

HORSEBACK RIDING From Easter through Thanksgiving, mountain trail rides originate from Cacapon State Park. One of the most popular rides starts in the state park and crosses along the top of Cacapon Mountain for 10 miles to the historically and geologically prominent Cacapon Rocks. With its spectacular views of the Cacapon River Valley, the Rocks were a common destination for 18th and 19th century riders, George Washington wrote often of his daily rides there.

FITNESS & GAMES Rankin’s Fitness Center is open daily and welcomes walk ins for classes and the state-of-the-art machine room. Indoor basketball court and therapy pool. Public tennis, basketball and volleyball courts are found at Cacapon State Park and Biser Street Park in town. Paw Paw Town Park has a softball field and playground. The Morgan County Recreation Area provides five ballfields for league play. Spectators are welcome.

HUNTING & FISHING Quail Hollow Hunts, located 8 miles south of Berkeley Springs, is a 300 acre mountainside hunting preserve offering guided pheasant, quail and chukar hunts with dogs. More than 20,000 acres in two wildlife management areas provide opportunities for hunting everything from white-tailed deer to roaming flocks of wild turkey. There are both spring and fall seasons for various game. Sleepy Creek Wildlife Management Area also offers primitive camping and a lake. Varying settings for canoeing, fishing and boating are found on the Potomac and Cacapon rivers, on area streams and on lakes at Cacapon State Park and Sleepy Creek Wildlife Area. The Ridge Fish Hatchery breeds famous West Virginia trout used to stock local lakes. Sleepy Creek Lake has bass, sunfish, pike and crappie. There are several public access points to the rivers noted on the map. Camping and sportsman access are found along the Potomac River in Paw Paw. Hunting and fishing licenses are required of both residents and nonresidents 15 to 65 years of age. NEVER hunt on private land without permission!

WATER SPORTS are not limited to soaking in the warm mineral springs. The lake at Cacapon State Park have paddle boats to rent. You can bring power boats to the Potomac River and Sleepy Creek Lake in the wildlife management area. Canoeing, kayaking and tubing are preferred sports on the Cacapon River -- but you need to bring your own equipment. There are sand beaches and lake SWIMMING with lifeguards in season at Cacapon State Park. The public swimming pool in Berkeley Springs State Park is open daily from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
