Newly renovated, junior 1 bedroom English basement apartment, with 4 full-size windows, offers plenty of natural light. Sleeps 3 adults with a queen bed and twin sofa bed. You'll have a comfortable night's sleep with 500 thread count sheets and tempurpedic pillows. The queen mattress is from Savvy Rest and is made of organic natural latex foam. The full bathroom has a bathtub and shower. There is a washer and dryer in the unit. The full-size kitchen appliances include a refrigerator, stove, oven, dishwasher, microwave, coffee maker, toaster and iron. The kitchen has granite countertops and is fully furnished with plates, glasses, cookware, utensils, etc. The apartment has all the conveniences of home. For travelers with small children, a highchair and Pack n' Play are available upon request.

The apartment is located just north of downtown, near 2 yellow/green line metro stops—just 3 blocks from Howard University/Shaw metro stop and 3 blocks from the Mt Vernon/Convention Center metro stop. Reagan National Airport is also located on the yellow line, so the commute from the airport is very easy. Washington DC is a very walkable city with good public transportation. You won't need a car while you are here. If you are traveling with a car, there is plenty of street parking available. Street parking is locally zoned, but we will arrange for you to have a parking pass for a $25 fee.

We are walking distance to vibrant nightlife, like the U street corridor, Logan Circle and Chinatown/Gallery Place. Only 3 metro stops to the National Mall and all of the historic monuments. Lots of restaurants within walking distances. 

For extended stays, we will have the apartment cleaned weekly for an additional $50. Nightly rate does not include the Washington DC lodging tax of 14.5%.

We live upstairs and are happy to answer any questions or make recommendations. The apartment has a separate alley entrance, and you will have complete privacy.

Why Greg Sitzmann chose U Street Corridor (Shaw)

The nice thing about the English basement apartment is that it's only a couple steps below ground. So it really feels more like a first-floor space. The ceilings are high. And the four tall windows let in plenty of natural light.

What makes this apartment unique

Our neighborhood, Shaw, is also called Old City. It has a great neighborhood vibe. Subway stops are convenient. But if you like to walk, it's a beautiful city to see on foot.

Cozy & convenient

Location is very close to the 8th and R street metro stop and the Giant grocery store is essentially one block away. Quite and just as pictured. Our host provided basic condiments (sugar and salt) and coffee and coffee filters! So thoughtful! Will definitely stay here again!!

Modern and convenient in a historic Shaw neighborhood

We enjoyed our stay in the historic Shaw neighborhood in Washington D.C. The apartment was a couple minutes walk from 2 metro stations, and we enjoyed the restaurants and gelato nearby. The apartment is nicely decorated and furnished (modern inside, historic outside), and the full kitchen and laundry were great for us. This was our first time using VRBO, and we loved it!

Clean, cute, convenient

This apartment was the perfect place for our short stay. The renovations are very nice and the place has all the amenities you need. We appreciated the book compiled by the host listing the many restaurant, bar and activity options within walking distance (notably Compass Coffee :-) We had a car so the parking pass was worthwhile. We had no problem finding a spot near the apartment. The Metro is just a short walk, however, if you don’t have a car. Didn’t feel uncomfortable in the neighborhood but like anywhere...I’d just be extra vigilant.

Greg (owner) provided good communication and information. Glad there were several options for WiFi since one of them didn’t work for us.

I’d stay here again - a great price and a good location.

Great stay

My family of 3 is just heading home after a 4 night stay. Great apartment in a great neighborhood. We felt that the space gave us ample room and it was a huge bonus to have a kitchen and laundry. I really appreciated the attention to detail in the rental. We shopped at the Giant ate at a great Italian place not too far. Our daughter loved the playground right outside our door. Would definitely stay again!

Great DC Home

We had a very enjoyable stay in DC. The property is in a great location; just a few blocks from the Convention Center and a short walk from the National Mall. There are great restaurants and a store nearby making for great food options. We stayed at the home with our small baby and there was plenty of room for the three of us. We would definitely stay here again if we return to DC.

Clean and convienient

We were in town visiting our daughter and son-in-law who live nearby in a small one bedroom apartment with no space for the parental units. This location was much quieter than the place we stayed last visit which was just off New York street and had emergency vehicle sirens screaming at all hours. Or maybe it was just Scott Pruitt going out for pizza from his $50 a night condo...but I digress. The location is about a mile from the Mall but we had no trouble with walking there several times. There is a Giant grocery 2 blocks away and a great Thai restaurant (BeauThai) a short block away. The space was small, clean and comfortable although we had difficulty getting the HVAC to warm the place up when the temps dropped from the 80's to the low 60's overnight. Probably just us though. The entrance is somewhat hidden in the bushes alongside the house and down an alley which was a bit strange as we arrived after dark and there was no light, but we were saved by the smartphone flash light. The locks on the doors (4 locks total to deal with to get into the apartment or 5 if you count the key lock box on the door knob) were a bit finicky to operate but we conquered that as well. If you're really tall the two steps down into the semi-basement apartment doorway could pose a challenge as would the low ceilings in some areas inside. The bed was very comfy. I would have preferred the TV to be in the living area instead of the bedroom but I didn't come to DC to watch TV. Full kitchen if you want to cook and a washer/dryer as well. If I had known that I would have packed much lighter and just done a load of laundry mid-stay. If you have a car I noticed that there seemed to always be street parking available in front of the house which is unusual in DC. The neighborhood was a little... gritty but we never felt unsafe walking back even late at night. But be aware that we're from Chicago so it takes something pretty significant to faze us. If you're from a less urban area it could make you nervous I suppose. All in all we were pleased with the property and will book it again next trip.
