Photos and Description of the Granville Ferry vacation cottage rental

Sleeps 6 + 3 With 6 Fireplaces (2 usable), Large Fenced Property, Close To Town

Michaelmas Cottage is an ancient house built in 1769 by Benjamin Rumsey, a Connecticut transplant and Chancellor of the Cheque in Annapolis Royal, on previously Acadian land in Granville Ferry (next door to Annapolis Royal). This is a beautiful building with remarkably little alteration done to it over the centuries. It sits on an acre of land, largely fenced, at the front of many acres of field stretching back to the South Mountain and beyond to the Bay of Fundy. There is a partial view of the water from the front of the house, but its great charm and beauty lies in its age and interior atmosphere. The owner loves sitting outside the house on the stone flag terrace or at the picnic table under the trees.

The house is painted in warm colors, has 6 fireplaces (one discovered during renovation and a seventh suspected on the second floor) enormously wide floor boards (no trees of this size are left in N.S.!), a huge brick oven in the Summer Kitchen, a narrow twisting and steep staircase to the second floor bedrooms (Bear in mind this might not be appropriate for an arthritic person or very young children. Please examine the photographs!) , sky lights, beams, a large colorful bathroom on the main with another on the second floor, sloping ceilings or rafters in the bedrooms, a colorfully tiled and well equipped kitchen with wooden ceiling, etc.

This is a treasured and lived in family home. The owner is not always here and travels extensively. The house is crammed with interesting collections from afar as well as photographs by the owner who, besides being an anthropologist, is also a professional photographer. You will experience the “soul” of this house by living here. It is perfect for family visits with the dog. There are flowering apple trees and lilac in the spring and it is very close to the delightfully picturesque village of Granville Ferry which hugs the shore en route to Annapolis Royal, 15 minutes by foot away.

A year or so ago this cottage was designated one of the 10 best vacation rentals in Nova Scotia. We like to think that this was because it is entirely unique, bringing as it does the past to life.

Michaelmas Cottage is a warm and peaceful place to come back to after a day of visiting the area! One can decide to spend the day in town. Annapolis Royal is directly across the water and only a 45 minute walk, 15 minute bike ride or 5 minute car trip away across the causeway and past the only tidal power station in North America. There one can admire the view towards Champlaine’s Habitation across the wide Digby Bight, shop, visit St. Anne’s Fort Museum, have an ice cream and join the atmospheric candle lit local cemetery walk after dark. Or you can have a beer in the local pub, take in a film or a theatrical production at the King’s Theatre, buy locally made chocolates and on Wed. or Saturday attend the most interesting country market in Nova Scotia in the town centre. A stone’s throw from here one can walk around the French Basin Marsh, where one can spot osprey, geese and ducks with young in May, marmots, deer, large turtles, eagles and other birds particularly during migratory months. Whale watching is done off Digby Neck (Humpback, Fin, Right Whale, Minke, Pilot). One can drive the Shore Road up the Bay of Fundy coast, passing fish markets such as the one in nearby Parker’s Cove, tiny villages and gorgeous basalt rock beaches. Nearby is Delaps Cove, a wonderful provincial park on the Bay of Fundy with plunging waterfall, and half an hour away is Kejimkujik National Park where one can cross country ski in winter and hike, camp, canoe and kayak in summer. Up the Valley and in nearby in Bear River, are vineyards where hours can be spent tasting and buying excellent local wines. Back in Annapolis one can learn about local history at the O’Dell House, the Sinclair Museum and in Granville Ferry (two doors down from Michaelmas and built on the same original land grant) at the Northview Museum. The local Art Gallery at ArtsPlace has a coffee house evening and workshops. Just down the road from Michaelmas one can pick all the blueberries you’d ever hope to eat, in a half hour, and at local farms you can buy apples, plumbs, corn, squash, all manner of vegetables, honey, jam, etc in season…
