About the property

Large one bedroom efficiency

G Mama’s Place is only one mile from Sturgeon Bay and minutes to Door County’s intriguing places and colorful events. Escape from your hectic world and recharge here. Choose to just settle in, or venture out and enjoy the delights of the area.

Not only are there the usual conveniences, Wi-Fi, flat screen TV, cable, VCR and DVD, but board games are stacked in the closet and a pool table ready. Amenities abound at this retreat for two adults.

Many restaurants are within a 5 minute drive, a short bike ride or a long walk. However, if you decide to prepare your own food the efficiency apartment is equipped to make preparation convenient. There is a refrigerator, microwave, electric fry pan and hot plate. It has a coffee maker and toaster plus dishes, utensils and cookware. A gas grill is located just outside the door.

There one queen sized bed and of course the linens are provided.

You will know you are somewhere special as you walk the short wooded path to your private entrance. As you round the corner of the house and approach your door there is the sound of water flowing over the rocks into a large natural pond. Goldfish hide in the pond; humming and song birds often gather at the nearby feeder.

Mother Nature provides many of the truly unique amenities of G Mama’s Place. Potowatomie State Park lends another dimension to the water/woods view – a sea of green trees in summer and vibrant orange, red and yellow ones in fall.

You can swim or sunbathe right on the property. The water is quite shallow and thus tends to be warmer than many other open water swimming areas. You can use the old rowboat and row along the shore or even fish. If you are a kayaker and bring your own boat you can launch right from the shore.

Bikers and runners can begin their activities from G Mama’s Place. A golf course is close and likewise public tennis courts.

At the end of a busy day you may want to refresh yourself with a sauna. Its pleasant warmth soothes achy, tired muscles. It warms an over-chilled body or can be taken just because it feels soooo good! Towels are provided for use in the shower/sauna.

Mother Nature frequently provides spectacular sunsets. Not only are the sunsets beautiful but the mellow color displays that follow are memorable. The display may continue for a half hour or longer and is a time of peace and tranquility. The daytime noises of people and activity give way to the soothing sounds of nature settling down for the night.

This year the beach is very small due to the high water level. It has both sand and stones and the amount of each varies according to the wind and waves. There is a place for a fire overlooking the shore.

Recharge yourself in Door County with a stay at G Mama’s Place.

Why DD chose Sturgeon Bay

In 1985 an acquaintance happened to mention that there was a very interesting piece of property for sale right close to Sturgeon Bay. He went on to say that it was "a wooded lot on the water." Having paddled that area in a canoe we expressed doubt about what he was saying. We did not remember seeing any heavily wooded lots on the water. He insisted that it existed. The first time we drove in to view it, not only was the water lover in the family captivated, but the woodsman also. Amid the many large trees a deer was there to greet us. Needless to say 'the rest is history.' Four years later, the home was built and has been owner occupied since 1989.

Best Vacation Ever

  • 5 of 5

Last week, my wife and I had the privilege of staying with DD at G. Mamma's Place in Sturgeon Bay. This was our first time in using VRBO and we were not disappointed one bit. DD was an absolutely fantastic host. She communicated frequently with us prior to our stay. During our stay, she answered our questions and provided us with countless suggestions to truly enjoy Door County. G Mamma's Place is a perfect getaway location for any couple. The accommodations are first rate; clean and comfortable. We had everything we needed for cooking meals and enjoying the property. The porch was the perfect place for morning coffee, breakfast, cocktail hour and dinner every evening. We very much enjoyed the private beach and it served as a perfect launch area for our kayaks. Our favorite part of the beach was every evening with a glass of wine watching the most amazing sunsets we have ever seen. We could not have asked for anything more from DD or her place during our stay.

DD provided numerous travel publications and maps of the area along with her personal recommendations whether it was places to kayak, places to visit or restaurants for dinner. Again, she was a perfect host and we very much enjoyed our conversations with her. She was very respectful of our privacy however was very accessible if we had questions.

We are already planning our next trip to Door County and G. Mamma's Place is where we will stay. Five stars for sure!!!!!! Thanks so much DD. God Bless!!!!!

Disappointing Vacation Rental

  • 1 of 5

There was no privacy since the owner was always around and would pop up whenever. The property needs updating since the shower door doesn't close tight, coffee pot leaked, refrigerator door does not close tight and mattress on bed is hard. The owner goes down to the lake every night to watch sunset so we were not able to. The last night we were there we had to wait until she came up from sitting down by lake with a friend drinking wine before we could do a fire and we wanted to watch the sunset. I asked her to help with internet, she knocked and before I could get to door she walked in! She owns the property, but she needs to give paying guests privacy. We were not there to socialize, but have a nice relaxing vacation. She needs to be scarce and she is able to see the sunset every night and she has to go down when she has guests. My fiancé locked door all the time because we never knew when she could show up. We were very uncomfortable the whole trip. We will not be returning to that rental any time soon. I would not suggest staying there unless you want a watchful eye on you and no privacy. Very old furnishings and musty. We could have stayed at a much nicer place for a cheaper price with privacy.

Owner's Response: How unfortunate it was that you missed the incredible sunsets by choosing to stay inside. When you first arrived, I told you about the phenomena that may occur and thought you were quite interested in viewing it. On the night that a friend visited we sat on my porch to talk. When the sun began to set and you still were not on the beach, I decided we might as well go to the shore for a better view. Our intention was to return to the porch if you came out. You didn’t. It is apparent now that you were obviously watching me through the curtain and disappointed that I was present. You seem to have misunderstood what your rent included. Guests at G Mama’s Place are entitled to their room, the use of the adjacent porch and the sitting area by the pond. There is generally no one else in those areas when guests are on the premises other than for maintenance. Additionally, I am happy to share the waterfront, dock, firepit and beach area with guests, all things that make G Mama’s special. I also share the view but would not ever consider relinquishing it. The rental contract states…. “Registered guests are invited to use the dock and beach area but usage is not exclusive to them as owner, friends and family are sometime present.” Family and friends rarely linger in the area if guests are present but usually just walk through in order to go for a swim or launch their kayaks. Thank you for pointing out items that need to be taken care of in the unit. Often owners are not aware of things that need to be fixed, replaced or just readjusted. Had you indicated the problems to me while you were here, most things could have been remedied to make your stay more pleasant. The freezer door didn’t shut because the freezer tray was simply not moved into position. The leaky coffee pot was changed. The three year old shower door will be getting a new magnet. There are several things that can be done to change the air and freshen it. I didn’t recirculate the air while you were here because when I came in to help you establish wifi, I noticed you were burning candles. Since they were very strongly scented I did not want to circulate air laden with allergens throughout the whole building. My apology for the abrupt entry into your room. When you requested my WiFi help I said I would be RIGHT there, and I was. It is unfortunate that you did not have the get-away that you anticipated. I would have tried to remedy the situation had I been made aware.

We had a wonderful time staying at DD's! The sauna was a welcome sight at the end of our very long days of hiking the nearby scenery. We'll definitely be back!

Beautiful spot , comfortable , private , amazing !

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I recently stayed at DD’s amazing rental unit. We came from our hurricane devasted island of St Thomas to attend a wedding and at that point , simply to get away . Not only was DD delightful , she held the reservation although I was unable to reach her for quite some time , her experience with disaster assistance allowing her to understand our communication issues and better yet , her understanding of our need for peace and rest. Peace and rest and relaxation we received . Wow.

The unit is wonderfully private , the view is beautiful, and it truly is a short path to the beach and dock where we enjoyed quiet time. There is a porch to sit on with a frog pond in the yard and with a view of the lake . We saw deer , turkeys and many birds on this quiet property .

Private entrance into an ever so comfortable room with comfy couch & chairs. The bed is very comfortable and the kitchen easily equipped for simple meals ( don’t forget the grill either!) We were thrilled to have running water and better yet the shower is great! . To top it off , the sauna is magicl. We thought after leaving the heat in St Thomas that we would not use it, but we did and loved it! Nothing is lacking in the way of amenities . Lovely soap, great coffee !

DD allows for total privacy , but , if you want or need to interact , she is readily available . We easily befriended her and felt we had a bond sharing our experiences with her .

Lastly , we had the option to stay at a lovely hotel with the wedding group , but chose to stay at DD’s place and are so very glad we did . We hope to go back someday , only if we can stay there .

We highly recommend this rental property , you will feel as if you belong.

Many thanks to DD ! A special place indeed .

Attempting to point out some of the special things about Sturgeon Bay and Door County is a daunting task. The county is marketed as a “place like no other” and that sums it up well. The diversity is incredible, considering there are fewer than 25,000 permanent residents in the county.

Food options range from fast food to wonderful fine dining. Fish fries are common but Fish Boils are a real treat.

The county has always been influenced by the Great Lakes with 300 miles of shoreline surrounding it. It is a paradise for boaters, sailors and kayakers. There are actually 11 lighthouses on the peninsula, including the last one to be automated in the United States.

You might be lucky and see a 1000’ freighter passing and you would probably be right if you guessed that it was built here. Likewise, you may spot a majestic sailboat or an old schooner, Pontoons, kayaks, small sail boats or Jet Skis are all available to rent. Charter fishing is available or bring your own gear, get a license, and fish from the docks.

There are an abundance of talented artists, musicians and performers tucked away in all parts of the county. Galleries are filled with evidence of these talented residents. Many musicians and performers retreat home to Door County to refresh themselves and sometimes treat us by performing.

The Peninsula Music Festival and the Midsummer Music Festival treat the classical fans and Birch Creek hosts Symphony, Percussion & Steel Band plus Big Band Jazz during their summer camp.

Outdoor music is scheduled often during the summer. Many villages host a weekly performance. Egg Harbor and Sturgeon Bay have the largest gatherings for these free concerts and bring in crowd pleasing performers,

If you are interested in nature, well Mother Nature smiles on Door County. There are 5 State Parks and 9 County Parks. You can hike, swim, bike or even tour a lighthouse. Bikers can enjoy miles of county roads with great scenery.

Peninsula State Park and Whitefish Dunes are two of the most known parks, but there are 3 others that are hidden gems just waiting for you.

A stop at the Door County Maritime Museum in Sturgeon Bay will certainly provide you with lots of information about the maritime history of the area and the lighthouses. It is well worth its entry fee. The Door County Museum in Sturgeon Bay is just the place for you if you are local history buff. It is small, excellently done and there is no charge. Located just a block from the museum is the Door County Library. Besides being a quite modern library, it has an art gallery that is well worth viewing.

The writer is a bit biased, being not only a resident but a native as well. loves the eclectic offerings of the area. The Sturgeon Bay, Door County area is not only a great place to be from but a delight to return to after traveling anywhere else.
