About this property

House on a Hill w/ Gorgeous Views! Comfy King Bed, Full Kitchen, Wifi

*** If you want peace and serenity, this is your place! If you want to party, this is NOT the place. No pets or smokers allowed. Please do not bother asking because we have a strict policy about this and will always say no to smoking or pets. There are no laundry facilities on site, however there are several laundromats in the area. If you need laundry on-site, you may want to find another listing to book. ***

Newly constructed in 2016, with an inspiring eastern view from the deck. Enjoy comfort, style, and modern amenities all wrapped up in a quiet neighborhood where you can hear the birds chirp and the wind rustle the leaves. Sunrise Perch is its own private standalone home with its own private entrance and one parking spot. The floors are gorgeous acacia hardwoods throughout and modern "brushed linen" tile (no carpet anywhere).

This space has a full kitchen, stocked with full-sized appliances, quartz counters, large sink, and all cooking/eating utensils that you'll need to make a great meal. The bathroom is stocked with shampoo, conditioner, body wash, hand soap, and hair dryer. The ceilings throughout are vaulted, giving an airy feel, with ceiling fans. All bedding and linens, including blankets, are washed for each stay. We emphasize and take pride in cleanliness.

If you are a party of 5, please check with me before booking. This space will fit 5, with the ideal being 2 adults and 3 children. The fold-out sofa will not fit 2 adults, so this space cannot accommodate a party of 5 adults.

We built the space with basic Feng Shui principles in mind for this size space. We chose this spot on the property so that guests could enjoy the natural beauty of the setting, especially the sunrise over the mountains to the east from the deck. Window positioning inside the home was chosen to take advantage of the views and the cross-breeze that being on a hill affords. We have new (2016) central heat and AC as well. Outside are four chairs to soak in the beautiful eastern mountains and tree canopy views. Please note: we do not have laundry facilities on site. There are several laundromats in La Mesa if you need to do laundry.

The bed/headboard and other wall art is handmade by me. I enjoy all sorts of carpentry and I like making both decorative and functional items from wood. The desk in the bedroom is handmade by a local Mt. Helix artisan. Put your clothes in the antique Javanese hutch in the bedroom, which was built in the 1800s! Be sure to check out the carving details on this amazing piece of furniture.

Guest access:
You have full access to the guest house and its amenities. This includes the deck and side yard in front of the deck. Your parking spot is the one at the top of the driveway area, with the black iron fence.

Guest interaction:
We no longer live on the property, however we are very close by in case of emergencies. I am available via text and message. My hope is that your stay is pleasant and peaceful.

Neighborhood overview:
Sunrise Perch is in the Mt. Helix neighborhood of La Mesa, CA. Our neighborhood is for those seeking quiet and serenity during their stay. This is not a neighborhood for anyone who wants to party, talk/laugh loudly, or play loud music. If you're looking for "livelier" places to stay, we recommend staying in downtown San Diego. What we love about Mt. Helix is that it's a semi-rural setting that is still quite close to downtown San Diego and beaches. The landscape is a beautiful tapestry of unique gardens surrounding custom, artsy, older homes. The neighborhood is hilly, with winding roads and beautiful views from most streets. There is shopping nearby (not walking distance, but an easy car drive) like grocery stores, coffee shops, fast food restaurants, gas stations, etc. The climate here is perfect. It is almost always about ten degrees warmer than the coast during the day. At night it can be about ten degrees cooler than the coast. Nearby (about 5 minutes drive) is La Mesa Village, which is a quaint, cute, walkable setting with lots of great dining/drinking options as well as boutique shops and antique stores. Try heading up to Mt. Helix Park (check my guidebook for location), which is a short 3-4 minute drive from our house. There you will enjoy sweeping panoramic views from the amphitheater and breathtaking sunsets. There is also a 1/4 mile hiking trail around the peak of Mt. Helix.

Getting around:
You will need a car to get around. If you don't want to take your car into downtown San Diego, you can always park at a trolley stop and take the trolley. There are trolley stops throughout the metro San Diego area.

Other things to note:
The king bed fits two adults easily, and the fold down leather sofa (full size) will fit two small children or one adult. We also offer a twin sized air mattress, which is in the bedroom closet. If you are looking for a party atmosphere, this is not it. Please check out downtown San Diego and the surrounding areas if that is your scene. This is a family friendly space! The noise of children is welcome and is not a problem for us. We just don't want any partiers. Our guests come to Mt. Helix for relaxation and serenity. Due to the hill location, noise carries very far in the canyons. We ask that all loud talking/laughing/socializing after sundown be done indoors with the windows closed, out of respect to our neighbors. Because this is a pure residential setting with no other vacation rentals around, all of our neighbors work regular business hours and need quiet after sundown. We hope you will enjoy and appreciate the quiet, family atmosphere of our neighborhood.

Nice, with some quirks.
The place is pretty nice. Very comfy bed. Nice layout. Very peaceful. The wood floor squeaks and cracks really loud when walking on it. The cabinet door panel below sink kept falling off, we had to keep fixing it. The towels provided are thin and cheap. Ice maker doesn’t work. Motion light over front door doesn’t work so u need to use the flashlight on your phone to see the key pad. Parking is right on the road on gravel, barely enough room. We would stay here again though.

I enjoy the outdoors, carpentry, running, reading, and spending quality time with family and friends.

My favorite poem:

“Your children are not your children.
They are sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself.
They come through you but not from you.
And though they are with you yet they belong not to you.

You may give them your love but not your thoughts,
For they have their own thoughts.
You may house their bodies but not their souls,
For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow, which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.
You may strive to be like them, but seek not to make them like you.
For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday.
You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth.
The archer sees the make upon the path of the infinite, and He bends you with His might that His arrows may go swift and far.
Let your bending in the archer's hand be for gladness.
For even as He loves the arrow that flies, so He also loves the bow that is stable.”
-Khalil Gibran, from The Prophet
