Overview

About the property

Gracious 2 bed / 1 bath with 2 LARGE outdoor living areas (veranda and terrace)

Charming hilltop home in the heart of Sayulita’s magic—Casa Naranjas gives you affordable style and comfort at one of the best locations in town.

WiFi throughout house and terraces. AC available for small extra fee.

Follow the winding stairs to this secluded oasis, surrounded by mango trees and lush palms, nestled next to some of Sayulita’s most exclusive homes. You’re in your own private world, but close to all the lively magic of Sayulita. Playa Sayulita, the town’s popular expansive beach, is two blocks down the hill to the left. In the other direction, distinctive galleries and organic coffee shops line the three-minute walk to the bustling town plaza.

Back home at Casa Naranjas, relax in the living and dining areas on the private veranda that wraps around the house, sitting under the rustic palapa (palm-thatched) shade roof, surrounded by greenery. You can also wash off after a day at the beach in the outdoor shower at the back of the terrace. Or chill out by swinging in the hammock—a favorite siesta spot.

The house was recently redecorated, combining classic “old Mexico” tilework, brick, and ironwork and contemporary touches. The open-air living area features two daybed couches for lounging and conversation, a convenient kitchen with countertop island that seats four, and brick archways over ironwork doors and windows that open to the tropical air and greenery around the house. Or you can retreat to the bedrooms, where AC is available on request, and sound-insulating windows add tranquility. The master bedroom features a pillow top king bed, the “mermaid” bedroom has two twin beds (which can also be made up as a king, and also have pillow tops). Plumbing and electricity have recently been upgraded to make your stay comfortable and convenient. Throughout, you’ll find charming pieces of local art and handicrafts.

Adding to the gracious indoor/outdoor living at Casa Naranjas, there’s a large terrace on the rooftop, complete with palm garden. There you'll find a romantic palapa-covered sitting area for hanging out in the shade, an umbrella-covered bistro table and chairs for rooftop dining, and chaise lounges for sunbathing. From here, you’ll get a closer look at the stately guamuchil tree that highlights the landscaping, a tree that provides sanctuary for the endangered green iguanas you can sometime spy from the roof.

A perfect destination for a couple, family, or group of friends vacationing in Sayulita, one of Mexico's select "Pueblos Magicos".

Why we love Sayulita:

Sayulita is a magical town—originally a quaint fishing village it has become a popular vacation destination for families, surfers and sun worshippers, wedding groups, yoga enthusiasts, and travelers from around the world. The town retains its village charm—caballeros on horseback can be seen riding down the main streets at times, mariachi bands often serenade passersby, the bell in the church tower on the central plaza rings regularly, and the handiwork of local artisans is everywhere to be enjoyed. The townfolk still celebrate Mexican holidays and traditional celebrations, often with exuberant processions and lively marching bands.

Added to this original charm, Sayulita is now bustling with a vibrant international expat culture, including folks from the U.S., Canada, Germany, France, Italy and more. The influx of young people from around the world keep the town active with what’s new and hip. An international blend of shops, restaurants, galleries, tours, spa services, and sports adventure opportunities line the streets, and the town boasts a dynamic night life. At times, there are drum circles or film festivals on the beach at night, and music festivals in the main square. Particularly on holidays, you can hear music late into the night.

You can relax by getting a massage on the beach, or by soaking in the waves, or sipping one of the famous Sayulita margaritas while you watch the sunset from your lounge chair. But in addition to the opportunities for R & R, when you’re planning a trip to Sayulita you should also prepare for some lively fun! For the best information about events and activities, shops, sports adventures, and dining in Sayulita, visit www.sayulitalife.com.

Casa Naranjas is the perfect vacation spot--close to the action, but a place to get away from it all too.

About Meg & Richard (owners)

My husband, Richard, and I, Meg, are both a combo of “travel bug” and “homebody” and that’s how Casa Naranjas came into being. We’ve been fortunate to live, for extended periods, in gorgeous places like Fiji and Hawaii, as well as South America and Australia. We’ve also stayed in “homes away from home” for shorter periods—highlights include Barcelona, Paris, the Dutch countryside and Costa Rica’s Pacific coast.

Even though we’ve seen a lot of beauty, when we first came to Sayulita, we felt this place has a special magic. The beach, the town, the people—we kept being lured back. So we feel quite lucky to have been able to create a “travel home” here, and we delight in sharing it.

We love traveling, but we also loved our primary home in California with its beautiful view of the surrounding hills and forests. In 2015 we lost this cherished home to one of California's catastrophic wild fires. To help deal with the loss, we scheduled a trip to one of our favorite places--Sayulita. We knew Sayulita was a great place to get away from life’s woes and hassles, and boy did we need that. While we were staying with friends there, we learned that a house right next door was for sale—we immediately jumped at the chance to buy it. Thank you, universe!

Meg & Richard (owners) purchased this house in 2016

Why Meg & Richard (owners) chose Sayulita

For us, getting a vacation home in Sayulita was literally like rising from the ashes. The previous owners named our home in California “Oranges” and we loved that, so we kept the name all those years. Now that “Oranges” is gone, we are so grateful to have “Casa Naranjas” (“Naranjas” means “oranges”.) We’ve poured a lot of love into it, and we’re really happy to be able to share it with you.

What makes this house unique

Our on-line property manager, Maureen, will be your contact person if you have any questions about our house during the reservation process. She speaks both English and Spanish fluently. Our on-site property manager, Paul, also bi-lingual, will be in Sayulita to help you check in and check out of Casa Naranjas. He will also answer your questions about how to get around in Sayulita.

Guestbook comments from the manager

Paul was extremely accessible and very helpful in re-arranging our car service and renting a golf cart. Paul was very kind and very available. It has been a pleasure working with you.

Notes:
Easy 2 block walk from town center, beach, and nightlife. Great restaurants, organic coffee houses, shops and galleries. >> Even luxury vacation rentals in downtown Sayulita (which, by the way, are right next door) recommend that guests NOT drive a car. Everything is so close, it's much easier to walk. >> For days when you want to adventure beyond the town and local beach, our on-site manager, Paul, can arrange for you to hire a car and driver. It's usually safer and more relaxing to let a local do the driving anyway!

It was the perfect get away!

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay at the Garden Oasis. We arrived during Holy Week & even though the town was crazy busy we felt safe & comfortable at the Casa. We loved being so close to the beach & town. There were so many places to relax in the shade on the outdoor patios listening to the birds & watching the iguanas. The beds were very comfortable & my teenagers loved the free wifi! It’s the perfect place to stay if you like an outdoor natural experience!

And we hear you: festival time in Sayulita is so packed with life that, while we love the excitement, we also need to retreat to the tranquility of Casa Naranjas to reboot. Thanks for sharing your experience, it means a lot to know that the Casa gave you and your family a happy vacation getaway. Come back soon!!!

A little piece of paradise, highly recommend it

  • 5 of 5

The house is amazing, located very close to the town's plaza, yet very quiet and green. The terrace and the open spaces give a unique sense of freedom and really help one's brain rest. Very close to Sayulita's beautiful beaches, shops and restaurants -- we basically walked everywhere.

We were welcomed by the property manager and were in touch with him throughout our stay for anything we needed. We had a slight issue with the water pump, but he made sure to fix it for us. He was very helpful with anything we needed.

Overall, this is an amazing place to stay, highly recommend it, we'll make sure to go back as soon as we can!

We loved it!

  • 4 of 5

We had a wonderful time visiting Casa Naranjas. My wife and I have three teenagers and the house was perfect. My boys loved sleeping in the open air setting. So peaceful and beautiful.

The home and team are top rate. The online manager Pamela is wonderful. Her communication was timely and appreciated.

The onsite manager Paulino followed through with everything he promised. He is terrific.

Our driver from the airport Paulino set up was prompt and professional and the price was reasonable. We stopped at the Mega for food/supplies. The driver even offered us cold beer and water. So nice!

We hired Paulino's friend to cook us an authentic Mexican meal. It was wonderful. The chile Rellenos were the best I've ever had.

The only downside is that everyone got sick. I guess we just have sensitive stomachs in Washington.

I would love to come back. We fell in love with Sayulita!

Owner's Response: So glad you experienced the magic of Sayulita and Casa Naranjas.Very sorry about the tummy upset though. Our family is from Washington too, and we've noticed that northern tummies do acclimate to Mexico/Sayulita upon repeat visits. Just to be safe, though, we're going to add more suggestions about staying healthy to our welcome packet. We hope you are able to come back, Sayulita is so special!

Great location with comfortable lush surroundings

  • 5 of 5

The location of the casa is a short distance from both the center of town and the beach. It is off the street and up many steps so anyone with mobility issues should take that into consideration. The off the street location is what made it so special for us. Even though it is in a neighborhood the casa feels very secluded because of the wonderful vegetation all around. Watching the tropical birds and several resident iguanas nearby was a daily treat. As stated the casa is open to the air in the main sitting /kitchen area. The kitchen itself is limited but everything works well. The bedrooms are very comfortable and quiet with good air conditioning. The wrap around veranda and rooftop patio were comfortable any time of the day or evening for relaxing. Each gets a good combination of sun, shade, and breeze to make them enjoyable. All in all it makes for a very relaxing stay and comfortable location to enjoy Sayulita.

All of our questions were answered quickly and the booking experience was pleasant. Paul, the onsite manager was great. He helped to arrange transportation for us, greeted us at the casa and answered all of our questions. He also came by twice to clean up the outside area that got covered with leaves and debris after a couple of windy evenings. Very good service.

Owner's Response: We're so glad that Casa Naranjas gave you such a great spot to relax and enjoy your vacation. Sayulita is so alive with interesting things going on all the time, we love the town but we also love the feeling of getting away from it all. So glad that combo worked for you too! We hope you'll come back soon!

More like glamping......................

  • 3 of 5

I really wanted to like Casa N - but the whole set up felt more like 'glamping' and I was disappointed - this is a 2 bedroom lay out with all other aspects of living outdoors including the open air kitchen. The staged photos make Casa N look much nicer than what we experienced.

The Good:

> Great location to town and in a lovely 'casa complex' but can be noisy - up 3 flights of stairs but that didn't bother us.

> Paul, property manager, was super responsive and kind - really appreciated his attentiveness.

> Bedrooms were comfy and fine - perfect for 4 people.

> Rooftop palapa and porch nice but shaded.

The Bad:

> Kitchen - this is an outdoor set up with gates you can lock. Wild Kingdom at night - family of lizards, moths the size of bats, spider & ants. We had to keep all food in the small old fridge - which never got cold enough.

> Really only sleeps 4 comfortably - the 'day beds' are in the kitchen and you are essentially sleeping outdoors.

> Bathroom - Shower did not drain (at all) so water rolled onto bathroom floor - while it looks nice with all the Mexican tile it is old and dated.

> No wifi for last 2.5 days - spotty at best

> Towels - not enough for 4 people for 7 nights and no beach towels.

> Garbage - Paul asked us to put garbage behind house and it was never removed for the whole week - so the critters enjoyed it.

Depends on what type of accommodations you are looking for but definitely not high end.

Owner's Response: We’re so sorry! We are relatively new owners, so your input was invaluable. Here are some of the improvements we made based on your comments: Wifi connection fixed, we've sent you a refund with apologies for your trouble. New fridge installed. Towel service has been increased. Shower fixed right away—again, we’re so sorry. While the fixtures may look a bit dated, the plumbing itself is actually newly upgraded and working well now. Garbage removal improved. Lightbulbs in living area have been replaced with ones to eliminate moths. Ant removal completed—sorry about this, we haven’t experienced them at the casa before, so we’re grateful you let us know. We've added a bit about the lizards you saw to our info for potential guests. They're geckos--think the little Geico guy--harmless tropical creatures that never bite or bother human food. They help us by eating mosquitos and other insects. We love the indoor-outdoor part of the tropical lifestyle, but it can feel like glamping if you're not used to it. To make sure people are getting what they want, we’ve emphasized this more in our online description. We also crave indoor comfort --that’s why we put extra into making the bedrooms a cozy indoor refuge, we’re glad you found comfort there! Again, our sincere apologies. We hope you can feel that we’ve taken your experience seriously and done our best to make every improvement. We hope the New Year brings everything good to you and to yours.
