Convenient location, comfortable home
Nice house located in a field, off the beaten path of Quinault. Peaceful and quiet. Enjoyed sitting on the porch. Saw the herd of elk early one morning. The TV and dishwater were not working.

About the host

Hosted by Mike and Hollie Nelson (Owners)

Host profile image
Mike was born in Alaska and spent most of his childhood exploring the outdoors and spending time with his family and friends. He moved to Washington in 1996 and has lived in the Grays Harbor area ever since where he currently works in the road maintenance and construction business and for a local school district.

Hollie was born and raised in Lake Quinault, graduated from Washington State University and married Mike in 2001.She taught for 12 years as a school teacher and now works as an Early Childhood Coordinator for a local school district

Originally, Mike and Hollie designed the Elk House for a family of three with their daughter's special medical needs in mind. However, the family simply outgrew the indoor living space as their family increased in size. The Nelsons now have 4 daughters and a son ages 12, 7, 6 and 5 year-old twins. The Nelsons also provide foster care for children in need and have a licensed foster home in the area.

The Nelson's are active in their children's school, church and community. They have a passion for serving others and feel privileged to share the home they have made so many memories in, with others. We hope you enjoy your stay at the Elk House!

Why they chose this property

Mike and Hollie built the Elk House in 2006. The surroundings were perfect as the property borders the land that she grew up on as a child. Ziegler Creek, that borders the property was the creek she played in as a child during the summer months. The surrounding fields are where she spent most of her spare time riding horses, quads, hunting, fishing and hiking. Owning the Elk House Property, adjacent to where she made her childhood memories, was a dream come true for both Mike and Hollie. It has been such a blessing to make similar memories with our children and to know that others will do the same.

What makes this property unique

When the house was built in 2006, we were amazed at the amount of wildlife in our 'front yard.' When local salmon are spawning, bald eagle sightings are a daily occurrence. Great Blue Heron spend ample time at Zeigler Creek and it's soul soothing to hear the sounds of birds singing on a spring or summer morning while you drink a cup of coffee on the covered front porch. An occasional sighting of Black-tail deer and coyote, and the rare, but majestic passing-through of a bobcat or black bear remind us that we are in the heart of the Quinault Rain Forest.

All of the local wildlife are are fascinating to watch from the large and expansive windows in the home! However, our most frequent visitors are the famous Roosevelt Elk. When we thought about what we should name our home as a vacation rental, Mike asked, 'What's the first thing you think about when you think of this home and our property?' The answers was clear---Roosevelt Elk. And so, our home suddenly had a name--The Elk House. Herds as large as 50 elk graze comfortably on the property on a regular basis. The only boundary they seem to sense is a 20 foot perimeter around the house. Needless to say, we get the most amazing view on earth when they visit! You may hear elk bugling back and forth, witness the bulls 'fighting', Cows (female elk) nursing their calves, and enjoy the entire herd grazing and even playing right in front of your eyes. There are very few opportunities to view this magnificent animal so up close and personal in a home setting. Don't forget to bring your camera!
