Elegant, Newly Renov apt in Old West/bordering Jordaan, filled with sunlight

Bedrooms 1
Space 600 sq ft
Property type apartment
Minimum Stay 5 nights

About the property

Great area, 1 bedroom, close to center, but not too touristy, small office rm.

Five years ago we bought, and completely renovated our second apartment in Amsterdam. The apartment is in the 'Old West' area which has become very trendy, but still wonderfully convenient with shops and services that are necessary.

This apartment is 55 sq.meters (600 sq. ft) and has every amenity: the bedroom has a queen-size bed, flat screen cable TV on the wall (a few English-language stations), a DVD player with a nice selection of DVDs, two large closets, a comfortable chair and a dresser. Large glass doors open on to the terrace, and the bedroom door can be closed for privacy. Off the hallway is a beautiful large shower ,and there is a separate toilet. The kitchen is fully equipped with new appliances, including a Nespresso machine, large microwave, and dishwasher. The hallway leads into the nice-size living room with a comfortable sofa, dining table, small bar, and bookcase. There are two large, double-glazed windows (it's very quiet) that look out onto the street below. Off the living room is a separate small room with futon, desk, computer, printer/copier/scanner, and a CD player. We have high Speed Internet. Free WiFi

It's the only apartment on the floor. The stairs from the outer door to the apartment are carpeted and unlike many Amsterdam apartments, are an easy walk with a landing between the first and second floor. There is only one apartment on each floor.

About Joan Fabricant

My husband and I used to exchange our New York City apartment with a good friend who lives in Amsterdam. After five or six years of loving the city, we decided to buy an apartment here. We have been coming to Amsterdam two or three times a year, each time for a month or two, for about 12 years. We decided to buy another apartment here as an investment. This apartment is also useful for friends, and family who come and visit us from New York as well as using it as a rental.

Joan Fabricant purchased this apartment in 2013

Why Joan Fabricant chose Oud West

We searched for many months for a second apartment. In addition to the price, our main criteria were whether we would like to live in it and its location, thinking of friends and renters. We found this one. We both agreed on it right away. It had great potential, and we knew that with a serious renovation and tasteful furniture, it would be a very nice place.

What makes this apartment unique

This is a very comfortable apartment in a great location. Everything is new, including linens, pots, pans, dishes, etc. There is lots of kitchenware. We also have a portable travel crib

We have some very good friends who take care of the apt. They are wonderfully helpful to any renter, and also lovely people. They will meet you with the keys, and explain anything you need to know about the apt or the city. They live a few blocks away should there be any problems. They renovated the apartment when we bought it, and so they know it well.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thanks for letting us stay on , on our final day before our flight.

The apartment was super clean, the bed really comfy & all the furnishings & equipment very good. Thanks also for the wine & chocs on arrival.

Bright, airy and comfortable! Easy access to all!

  • 5 of 5

This is a great apartment! Know that it's up 2 flights of stairs - once you get your luggage up, the stairs aren't bad on a daily basis. I have some health issues and did fine going up and down even 2-3 times in a day. Lots of restaurants, the Foodhallen, grocery stores and other stores where you can get anything you need on your trip. 3 different tram lines right outside the apartment or within a block's walk. Quiet at night. I was a solo traveler and felt very safe in the area. Good sized apartment with everything you need! Fully equipped kitchen, wifi, laptop, comfortable living room & bedroom. Shower and sink are separate from toilet - nice for when you're traveling with others. The balcony was great for relaxation at night or for an early breakfast! Lots of light in the apartment through large windows. The windows open 2 different ways to create comfortable cross breezes. Joan's friend Sylvia met me at the apartment to let me in and show me around the place. She was so helpful in getting me to the apartment and in showing me how to get to the different places I had on my itinerary, by tram! She was flexible and accommodating to my departure needs. Joan was great in helping me plan to be at her apartment. She gave me helpful information on the trams and also info on how to navigate in Amsterdam. If you go to Amsterdam, this is the place you want to stay! It's in a regular Amsterdam neighborhood and is relaxing to come "home" to after a day full of touring. I hope to stay here again if I'm able to return to Amsterdam!

Gorgeous apartment in great part of town! Book it!

  • 5 of 5

If this apartment is available for your dates, book it! It is nicer than pictured, superbly located, and the people you will deal with are great! Joan was very prompt in all her correspondence and Sylvia, who met us at the apartment, and checked us out, was fabulous. We were greeted at the apartment with a bottle of wine and chocolates and a thorough explanation of all the workings of appliances, wi-fi, locks, etc. There was also user manuals for appliances in case we had a problem as well as multiple tour books etc. The Nespresso coffee maker is great and Joan supplies the coffee pods and sugar! The pantry has various items, and also provided were foil, saran wrap, dish soap, and all the kitchen dishes, toilet paper and utensils you could ever need. The best thing we found about this apartment, other the above, was the location. It is in the Oud West (Old West) section, which is non touristy, filled with the local families and young adults with so many excellent restaurants, stores, grocery stores and cafes. We absolutely loved the vibe of the area. It is a 20 minute walk to Dam Square or a 10-15 minute tram ride. We always ate dinner within a 2-5 minute walk from the apartment. Definitely try Zest, Kade West, Spaghetteria, Meneer en Mevrouw Keus, and Cafe Binnervisser. Or The Breakfast Club for breakfast or the De Foodhallen!

Getting from the airport to the apartment is easy. Take the train to Centraal Station, then get Tram 17 right in front of train station. The tram stop is the name of the street on which the apartment is located (Bilderdijkstraat), and it is a one minute walk from there.

I would say again, if this place is available when you are travelling, don't wait, it is a very popular place, for great reason.

Joan, can't wait to stay in your apartment again!

lovely apartment close to museums and more

  • 5 of 5

Everything about this apartment was wonderful! It's up 2 flights of stairs but they are not too steep and there is a landing halfway up. We were here for 6 nights and felt at home right away. Everything was as described. The kitchen is very well appointed with plenty of dishes, glassware, plates, pots and pans, etc. The bed is wonderful, great shower, comfy living area. We loved the CD collection and the use of the computer as well. There are several tram stops within a minute of the apartment that can take you to the museums, the city center, and much more. Several local restaurants are really good (Happy Happy Joy Joy right next door for example), and there are grocery stores nearby as well. Sylvia, our contact person, greeted us when we arrived and was very helpful. If we come back to Amsterdam we hope to stay here again! Thank you, Joan!

Fabulous apartment in great location.

  • 5 of 5

We just wanted to say thank you for a great stay at your apartment. You’d thought of everything from the guide books right down to the welcoming gift. It was great communicating with Joan and we were fortunate enough to extend our stay. Sylvia was extremely friendly and helpful, meeting us early on New Year's Day.

Everything in the apartment is perfect - it exceeded our expectations. The location is great, not right in the centre, but not too far from it. The tram stop is right in front and it is extremely easy to access various areas in Amsterdam from there. The neighbourhood is lovely and only a short walk to the Jordaan. The apartment itself is very spacious, clean and tidy. The kitchen is fully equipped including washing machine and dishwasher as well as tea, coffee and essential groceries. We stayed here in January but the central heating kept us nice and warm! My kids were happy about the fast wifi and I was able to book and print off tickets.

This was one of the best we've stayed in and can highly recommend it.

Wonderfull Apartment in a Perfect Location

  • 5 of 5

We spent a month in this Apt., and loved everything about it. Its fully equipt., and in a great location. We did lots of cooking at the apt as well as tried most all the local restaurants. You just have to step outside the doo,r and you can find a place to eat or shop.

We also rented Joan and Niels other Apt for a month in 2014, and it was also a great place. Dealing with Joan is very easy and having Sylvia close by is very convenient, if you should need some help with anything.

My only hesitation in reviewing this apt is that we want to keep it our secret ..... LOL !!

When we left to return to Canada in mid Aug we were sad to leave our other home.

You won't be disappointed if you rent here! We will be back!

A very happy Christmas

  • 5 of 5

We rented this lovely apartment for a week over Christmas and had an amazing time. Joan was really good to deal with by email with fast responses and helped us with planning our trip. We arrived at Schiphol and then took a train to central station followed by a tram which dropped us off just around the corner, simple. Sylvia met us at the apartment and showed us around.

We've been to Amsterdam quite a few times, but always stayed in hotels. What a treat it was to have our own spacious apartment, in a great location. The area is very nice with plenty of supermarkets, shops, bars and restaurants and walkable to the centre. We hired bikes for the week which was great fun and made travelling around the city easy.

The apartment was so comfortable, clean, modern and well equipped, it could not have been better.

We are hoping to return again in the future, Amsterdam is a fabulous city! Thanks Joan and Sylvia :-)

Nearest Airport
11 Miles
Car: not necessary

Oud West has become one of the most desirable, and fashionable neighborhoods in Amsterdam. It borders on the Jordaan and is a 10-minute walk to the center. Our apartment has 5 tram lines (the best way to travel in Amsterdam) within a half-block. The museum area (Museumplein) and Vondel Park are 10 minutes by tram (three tram stops) or a 15 minute walk. Leidseplein is within walking distance. We are a few stops from the Dam(or a 15 minute walk) and Central Station. We are close to the Anne Frank House. There are supermarkets, drug stores, a laundromat, as well as many great restaurants, cafes, bars, and small retail shops, all within a block or two. It is a wonderful mix of many small, boutique type shops as well as neighborhood stores and services. The apt is 3 blocks from "De Hallen" the beautiful new food and arts complex just completed that used to be the old tram depot.

It is a really wonderful neighborhood close to everything, but a little away from the heavy tourist area.
