About this property

Coastal Estate Cottage/Log Burner/Beautiful Coastal Paths & Woodland Walks

Located in the heart of Corsewall Estate, seven miles from Stranraer, surrounded by historic woodland and overlooking a traditional 19th century walled kitchen garden, the recently restored Stables cottage is an ideal base for exploring Wigtownshire and rest of Dumfries & Galloway.

Stables Cottage, located on the first floor, has a spacious, modern open plan sitting room with kitchen and dining area with a traditional log burning stove as a focus for relaxing and comfy sofas and arm chairs.

The cottage has a double bedroom with a traditional style cast iron king size bed over looking the old walled garden. There is a twin bedroom with ivory traditional style cast iron beds. The bathroom has a bath with an overhead chrome shower.

Stables Cottage is equipped with a bean to cup coffee machine, Smart TV, DVD player; Roberts Revival Bluetooth Radio and WiFi, a selection of board games, books and classic films. Stables Cottage is eco friendly with the power being generated from one of the Estate's two wind turbines and the heating and hot water provided by a biomass boiler. The cottage has its own private garden, with garden furniture and a barbecue. There is also a large trampoline, with a safety enclosure, a zipwire, a climbing frame and a Wendy house in the Estate gardens for children to use.

We provide a welcome pack for guests on arrival including a jar of incredibly edible, home-made Corsewall brownies, milk, bread, jam, butter, tea, coffee and fresh flowers from the garden (when in season). You'll find the cottage well equipped with the general basics too from washing up liquid, bin bags to washing powder and loo roll.

Over the past year we’ve been busy in our little corner of South West Scotland creating a host of magnificent woodland paths and coastal walks around Corsewall Estate for guests to enjoy during their stay. There are lots different options for shortening the walks or lengthening them. Many guests comment that they love the new paths as they don’t need to drive anywhere to walk – it’s just a case of stepping outside and the walks are right on their doorstep.

Corsewall Estate has three pretty beaches on Loch Ryan - Boat Bank, Lady Bay and Port Beg - that Stables Cottage guests can explore. A pretty walk down one of the drives will take you to Boat Bank, which is the nearest one to the cottage. Both Boat Bank and Lady Bay are wonderful spots if you like collecting shells or pebbles - oyster shells and mussels to cowries and scallop shells never fail to disappoint. Bird watching down on the shores of Loch Ryan or in the woods is second to none.

Port Beg is a pretty bay, pebbly down to the waterline and then sandy in the sea - ideal for paddling and swimming. There are lots of rock pools - so a bucket and a net is a must for the kids! There's a grassy area for picnics and barbies and the views out to sea, with Ailsa Craig in the foreground and the Isle of Arran in the distance, are simply magical.

The gardens and lawns provide a secure environment for children and it is a wonderful location for them to enjoy the great outdoors and play good old fashioned games from hide and seek and football to kick the can. The lawns are great for running about, and there are lots of little banks, which are ideal for rolling down. A stream runs through the estate, so with two stone bridges and an endless supply of sticks, Pooh sticks is always a fun game for children to enjoy.

And families are welcome to set up camp in the woods beside the lawns - we provide the tent, roll mats, wood and campfire location - guests just need to bring their sleeping bags! And if it all gets too much for some younger members of the camping party, they can always retreat back to home comforts indoors.

Located in over 20 acres of gardens and woodland adjacent to Stables Cottage, there are lots of walking paths around the estate you can enjoy - on foot or by bike. This also makes it a great holiday for dogs too! In late January and February, the woods feature charming drifts of snowdrops followed by daffodils and in April and May the hue turns to purple with acres of bluebells. There is colour in the gardens almost all the way through the year starting with camellia from January to March, followed by a riot of colour in April and May as the rhododendrons and azaleas come into flower. The autumn sees the hydrangeas providing colour all the way through to November.

There is oodles of wildlife to spot – from roe deer and hares to barn owls, woodpeckers and most importantly, this area is one of the last bastions of the red squirrel.

The Blue Peter pub in the village of Kirkcolm is 10 minutes' walk away and does good pub grub.

Two dogs are very welcome at the cottage - there are lots of lovely walks for them around the estate and down to the shore. We charge £25 per dog per week/£20 per dog per short break and we ask that you let us know in advance to book them in.

We have a second cottage, Garden Cottage, about 50 metres from Stables Cottage, which sleeps 6 - so groups of up to 10 can easily be accommodated in both locations.

Excellent Holiday
Nicely situated, well equipped cottage on a lovely estate with lovely walks including a short stroll down to Loch Ryan. The hosts were very helpful and provided an excellent welcome pack which included delicious chocolate brownies. They also provided a good information pack on where to eat and where to visit.

Superb location
On a very peaceful country estate with access to the whole grounds, which included woodland and loch beaches. Very good paths and marked walks. Lots of wildlife and tranquility. We enjoyed an excellent week here, the Stables Cottage was well equipped and comfortable with tasteful decor. The owners were very welcoming and friendly.

Lovely property and area
The accommodation was very well equipped, with everything needed, comfy bed , lovely estate and area for walks, owners very friendly Only downside was the village pub was shut for the week, but of course this was nothing to do with the let itself. Very nice relaxing holiday

Calm and lovely
We spent two wonderful weeks at Corsewall Estate with our kids (8 and 11 yrs). Kate and Angus were extremely amiable hosts. The kids loved the Estate grounds with the trampoline and the playground with the zip line. It`s just a short walk to some very nice beaches (mostly rocky), too. Sandy beaches for bathing are also not really far, ~20 minutes by car. The surrounding has apparently not yet been discovered by a lot of tourists, which is somehow astounding given all the beaches and the nice things you can do and visit. Examples are some beautiful castle gardens (Glenwhan was our favorite but also Kennedy castle and Logan botanical gardens were nice), the ice cream factory of Cream o`Galloway and the highland coo farm Kitchen Coos and Ewes. We can definitely recommend to holiday at Corsewall!

Great little cottage in beautiful location
This was a lovely place to spend a week - the cottage is cosy and well-equipped, and the estate itself is wonderful - there are some great walks along the coast, with views of Arran on a clear day.

The Carrick-Buchanan family has owned Corsewall Estate for over 200 years. When Angus and Kate Carrick-Buchanan moved to Corsewall House in 2002, they set about renovating a number of properties including this cottage so we could provide luxury, high-end holiday accommodation.

Why they chose this property

The Carrick-Buchanan family has owned Stables Cottage for over 200 years - it's one of a number of houses and buildings on the historic, 3000-acre Corsewall Estate.

What makes this property unique

We completed renovated Stables Cottage in 2012, creating a wonderful holiday house with two bedrooms and one bathroom - so it's ideal for families or romantic breaks. The house is in a quiet and peaceful location in south west Scotland, far away from crowds, traffic jams and the stress of everyday life. It's surrounded by rolling countryside and is 3/4s of a mile from the sea.
