About this property

Elegant, Recipient of Historic Preservation Award! 2 Blocks From Downtown .

**The Black Dog Hideaway is a legally registered vacation rental with the City of Bozeman and the state of Montana. We have a private finished basement apartment with a separate entrance in which a family member resides for any questions you may have. Our house is located in the more desirable south side of Bozeman's Historic District and is just 2 blocks from all that Downtown Bozeman has to offer, shopping, restaurants, bars, and even occasional street fairs. Only 2 blocks from Cooper Park, our neighborhood park, walking distance to Montana State University, and located only 25 minutes from our community ski hill, Bridger Bowl. An hour and a half from Yellowstone National Park, and a few minutes in any direction from a wealth of hiking, biking, fishing and any other outdoor activity you can imagine.

Built in 1911, this historic Craftsman Bungalow style home is the recipient of the 2010 Historic Preservation Award, Black Dog Hideaway is your elegant and cozy home away from home. Come stay here and you will enjoy:
* custom design wood floors.
*original wood trim and built -ins from this historical home’s first days.
*a huge, upstairs master bedroom suite complete with a natural stone walk in shower, and a whirlpool, soaking tub, kick plate heaters under each sink to warm up the area if needed.
*gourmet kitchen with black granite counter tops and outfitted with everything you'll need including a dishwasher, double oven, and pot filler over the stove. Kick plate heaters are installed in the kitchen for extra heat if needed.
*A covered backyard deck, fenced private backyard with a beautiful green lawn, native front yard landscaping, and front porch with privacy shades and two front porch swings.
*We have a “50amp NEMA 14-50 Outlet for EV Charging in a garage. Door may be too narrow for some EV’s”
** Both bedroom 1 and master bedroom suite have Mitsubishi Mr. Slim heat pumps to give our guests air conditioning in the summer and extra heat in cooler months should they want it.
* If you need assistance, our son, Grant, has a private apartment with a separate entrance in the basement of our home.
*** Please keep in mind this home is over 100 years old and therefore you will have some creaky floor noises. It's one of the charming features of our home. We like to think it's our homes way of saying "Welcome" to our guests.

Beautiful Home
The Black Dog Hideaway is a beautiful, cozy house located close to downtown and the university. The house has everything you need with an incredibly stocked kitchen. It was the perfect place to stay for our 5-day trip to visit our son in Bozeman and ski at Bridger Bowl. We will definitely rent the Black Dog on our next visit!

About the host

Host profile image
We are Johnny and Susan Kirkland, we live in New York, on Long Island's North Shore, most of the year, but all of our 4 children have moved out west and made it their home. So, we thought we should follow suit, we just aren't quite ready to leave New York full time yet. We bought our house and stay there several times per year, so you can be sure that all of the creature comforts are available to you. Susan is a retired Special Education Teacher, who still substitute teaches on a regular basis and Johnny is a Physicist and software developer. Since our children have gone, we've picked up a new hobby of raising guide dogs. We have successfully raised Josh, who is a working guide dog, and we have raised London, who is now a Vet Service Dog for a disabled Vietnam veteran, and we have Gretha, a breeder dog for the GDF, as well as Dave, Sushi and North. North is yellow and the other three are black labs. This is where our home's name comes from, The Black Dog Hideaway is a tribute to our love for our guide dogs and the important work they do.

During your visit you may see our son Grant who takes care of the Black Dog Hideaway and lives in the private basement apartment with a separate entrance, or when you are making a reservation you'll talk to Sue who manages the home and bookings.

Please feel free to contact us anytime, we'd love to hear from you!

Why they chose this property

We fell in love with this house the moment we stepped inside, and we know that you will too! There are two adorable porch swings on the front porch, and the subtle character is amazing. Downstairs, you'll notice the original woodwork, and original built in cabinets from days gone by. Upstairs was updated with comfort in mind. This house has the best of both worlds, old world history and modern updates and comforts. Plus, you can't beat the location, and proximity to downtown Bozeman!

What makes this property unique

Please enjoy the jetted tub in the master bath. Also for your comfort we have installed baseboard heaters under each sink to warm you from the bottom up.
In the master bedroom you will find a built -in wall heater for you additional comfort. For your comfort on those very hot summer days we have installed a Mr. Slim air conditioner in the master bedroom.
The stereo is located in the master bedroom cherry wood closet, and can be heard throughout the second level on built -in speakers.
In the living room, we have installed a 55 inch 3DTV with 3D glasses for 6. Original hardwood floors have been enhanced with walnut ribbon knots and refinished to their natural beauty. With the push of a button, you can enjoy our gas fireplace and enjoy a cozy relaxing atmosphere with family and friends.
The kitchen has granite counter tops, double oven, pot filler over 5 burner gas stove, ice maker on the refrigerator door, double sink, and trash compactor.
The walk to town is easy, and close, as is Cooper Park at only two blocks away. We have a covered backyard deck with outdoor table and chairs that seat 6 for added summer entertaining. A Weber grill is also on the paver patio. Our back yard is professionally landscaped with quaint limestone walk ways, gardens, and a paver patio in keeping with our 1911 Craftsman style home. Fully fenced in yard.
