About Todd Drake

We are both educators. I am also an artist and my wife, Robin, works with adults living with Autism. We love Duck for the wonderful people, and the unforgettable beauty of the sound, sea, and maritime woodlands. We have spent many summers at this cottage and are happy to give you tips on where and what to enjoy in the area. Ask us about our favorite walking paths, the hidden ship wreck, and favorite coffee houses!

Why Todd Drake chose Duck

After many summers of enjoying the beach with our children and family, I and my wife have lovingly restored and updated our family's cottage and hope to share and enjoy it for years to come.

What makes this cabin unique

More modest than an ocean front rental, but more than your average beach box, this cottage is perfect for a family that is looking for a home away from home experience. Newly remodeled, the Nantucket style exterior just says 'relax.' Throughout the downstairs warm cypress paneling welcomes you and your family inside while the new screened in porch is perfect for resting between trips to the beach, sound, shopping, or bike path. Updated with new AC, the cottage is also designed to capture the summer breezes from all directions and with two sun decks, swing, picnic tables, a Live Oak shaded hammock, and more. There are plenty of places to enjoy family, or a good book, in the out of doors.

Relaxing, Rain or Shine!

  • 5 of 5

This was our family's second stay here and once again we had a terrific visit. The weather this time was less cooperative, with some pretty wild storms, but it didn't bother us in the least. The proximity of the beach made it easy to trek back and forth, and the house is so comfortable and welcoming that we were happy to snuggle inside, watch the dramatic changing skies from the second floor deck, and read, play board games, and nap. We hope to return next year!

Cute Cottage with a lot of character.

  • 3 of 5

We enjoyed our time and the cottage was really neat. The traffic in Duck was pretty bad and we felt like we had to really schedule our travel at certain times of the day so we wouldn't spend so much time stuck in traffic. We loved the new, wide Beach and the fact that the beach isn't so crowded around there.

Well kept property with excellent location

  • 5 of 5

We loved the location as it was only a 5 minute walk to a great beach and only a 10 minute drive to Harris Terter, Food Lion and many restaurants. The house certainly had many personal touches which made it feel more like a home than a vacation rental property. Should the need arise we would certainly consider this house again for our vacation needs.

Good value

  • 5 of 5

I thought that the cottage was exactly what I expected and was a good value for what we paid. It was exactly as it appeared to be online as seen on the pictures. The cottage was older (as opposed to the newer builds closer to town), yet was well cared for and I really appreciated the family history of the house. We wanted a 3 bedroom rental, not an 8 bedroom rental, and this house was the perfect size for our family of 4. Todd, the owner, was extremely conscientious in his communication and responsiveness of my many, (and at time, tedious) questions of the house prior to our arrival. I would highly recommend him as a future property owner to rent from. The house was about an 8-10 minute walk to the beach, which was fine for adults and our 6 year old son, yet we did end up purchasing a cart to help with our beach supplies, as it was a bit much to carry our 3 year son and beach supplies. If pressed to find a negative (since there really wasn't an obvious one) one aspect for improvement would be the master bed, as it was on the older side. Yet, I really appreciated the thought and care of the "owner notes" that were left in the home for instructions of appliances, and our boys loved the "Pirate" bunk bed room!! The porches were also our favorite spot in the house. The owner was also very honest about the home that was being built next store as a potential source of noise, and I appreciated his honesty regarding this (it wasn't an issue for us, and the house is now completed; or should be at this point). So, for potential rentals- this would NOT be an issue, just an example to prove the trustworthiness of the owner. Overall, I would return (and I am quite picky...) Thanks Todd, for a nice week at Duck!

Delightful, well-kept, comfortable cottage!

  • 5 of 5

Our family truly loved our stay in this house. It's only a short stroll to the beach, where we spent most of our time, but we wouldn't have been sad if there had been bad weather days, because the cottage is so welcoming and well-organized. It has a top-floor deck for watching the thousands of stars and the Milky Way at night, a screened-in porch for reading and drinking tea outside without getting sunburned (or wet, if it's raining), and a ping-pong table under the house on the garden level, to play at the end of the day. We did all of the above! The house is on a quiet street, and we slept peacefully at night--hard to believe it was the busy month of August! It's an easy walk to the Sound side, too, where we all walked one evening to watch the herons, geese, and sunset.

The owners have furnished the house with many thoughtful touches. There are lovely paintings and photographs (much of it the work of the owner, I believe) on the walls, and lots of beach treasures to admire inside and out. It's obviously a well-loved house. We were thrilled to find beach chairs, umbrellas, and boogie boards there so we didn't have to pack our own. And we could see the house is supplied with lots of other beach equipment, too, geared toward children younger than our two.

The owner kindly gave us tips about local sights and services and responded to questions both before and during our stay. But because we were enjoying the beach and the house so much, we didn't make many shopping trips: an afternoon to stock up at the Food Lion; a couple of morning runs to Tommy's Market for pastry; and Scarborough Faire for the wonderful Island Bookstore and shops, none of these very far away. We were all sorry to leave and are already discussing when to return!

Located in SoundSea Village, our cottage is in a family friendly community with old school sand roads. We are on a quiet cul de sac with no through traffic just 3 minutes from the beach and 2 miles from the beautiful village of Duck. Bike or jog there on the well loved walking/biking trail that stretches for miles north and south. We have private access to an uncrowded, wide, and clean beach. Jet ski, skim board, and kayak rentals for enjoying the near-by Currituck Sound are just a block away. Sunsets over the Sound and milky way viewing from our top deck are a must experience. Great location for a family reunion or fall wedding on the beach with other rent by owner cottages within walking distance. An Environmental Center, lighthouse tour, Wild Horse tour, and historic WhaleHead Mansion are just up the beach in Corolla. Please note, for the summer season of 2017, the beach in our community is being renourished. See Town of Duck for Updates.
