About Ellen Helsell

In 2007, Ellen Helsell decided to return to Turtlehead Farm after raising her children and co-founding a school on Vashon Island Washington. She is happy to be a part of the next generation of stewards moving back to the family land. She is currently the manager of Turtlehead Farm, LLC, a business which offers horsemanship programs and children's camps, horse boarding, guest trail rides and site rental for wedding and other events.

Why Ellen Helsell chose Eastsound

The Helsell Family inherited the Orcas land from a family friend, Ruth Brown. The land was gifted to the family in 1955 and has been a treasure to the island community because it has been protected from development and preserved as a wild habitat.

Jack and Jan Helsell (Ellen's parents) were owners and directors of Camp Nor'Wester on Lopez Island where Ellen and her sisters spent much of their youth. After 13 years of running the camp business Jack and Jan returned to Orcas Island and began making Turtlehead Farm their home. With the aid of a sawmill that Jack built, they built a large log home, the log cabin, barn, greenhouse/tool shed and several other outbuildings.

What makes this cabin unique

Turtlehead Farm has a special charm which serves to make guests feel relaxed and at home. The setting with its sod roof dwellings, the beautiful garden, the horses, donkey, sheep and chickens all add to the magic and peaceful quality of the farm.

A rare gem!

  • 5 of 5

Words cannot describe this property, it’s surroundings, and inhabitants. Truly amazing. The cabin was absolutely perfect for my husband, 9 year old daughter and myself. Cozy, immaculately clean (I mean everywhere), quiet (the floor does not creak anywhere), warm (we were here in the winter) and spacious! While traveling it’s so difficult to find a place that feels like a home but everything here made it so easy! We cook for a living and the kitchen had all the items required to entertain/ prepare meals. Did I mention the wood burning stoves? We are from the city so it’s a rarity to hear, smell and feel the warmth of a real fire. Such a treat. That’s just the inside; I haven’t even gone on about outside the cabin...there were wild rabbits running around on the moss outside our front deck, green on the hills as far as the eye can see and clean, refreshing air. Ellen was so sweet and patient with our questions, a wonderful host. We were able to walk/hike the grounds as we pleased, picked a few winter vegetables in the garden for our dinner and meet some of the horses (one of our favorite moments). Our daughter will forever look back to our stay there as “Ellen’s Place” and we would come back in a heartbeat. A rare gem. Thank you!

Owner's Response: Annabelle, I am so happy that you and your family enjoyed your stay. You were wonderful guests and I hope we will see you again in the future. I would love to see Mia come back to spend more time with the horses. Ellen

Cozy, bucolic cabin!

  • 5 of 5

This was a last minute booking for me and boy did I get lucky. Ellen is warm, friendly and very helpful. Her pups are adorable and the farm is just paradise. The cabin was cozy at night with the fire burning and we had fun roaming the property and hiking in the rain. The bed was VERY comfortable--good sleeping to be had here! Can't recommend it enough!

Beautiful property, beautiful stay!

  • 5 of 5

This property was so charming! The cabin was one of the cleanest we’ve stayed at. The bed was very comfortable and the kitchen was well stocked. The view from the cabin even in the winter was incredibly idyllic. We enjoyed reading in front of the fire and watching the horses come out in the morning. Turtleback Mountain Preserve is accessible from the cabin. We really enjoyed walking out the door and getting right to the outdoors. We wandered around the forest trails the first morning and then hiked up to the summit the next - a very quick 2.5mi round trip from the cabin. Ellen made the stay very seamless and made herself available for any questions. We can’t wait to come back and spend more time relaxing on this beautiful farm!

Lovely property. Delightful owner.

  • 5 of 5

Turtleback Farm was a perfect homebase on Orcas Island. We traveled all over the island during our stay and always looked forward to retiring at the farm in the evening. Ellen was helpful and answered any question we had. I only wish we had taken advantage of their lovely garden more! We would definitely recommend this place if you plan to stay on Orcas.

Lovely Cabin and Location

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed staying at this lovely cabin. It has everything you could need and is very private up on a hill above the garden, barn, and horse fields. Ellen encouraged us to pick vegetables and flowers from the garden and we relaxed cooking and sitting by a fire on the cooler nights.

Everything was above expectations - it was kept very clean, the bed was incredibly comfortable, and there were flowers and interesting books on the shelves to look at. We loved the location, which was very serene and close to wonderful hiking trails. Getting to Eastsound took us less than 20 minutes and was a gorgeous drive, like every place on the island. It's also a short drive to Deer Harbor for boating trips. We hope to stay again sometime.
