Alpine Cottage at Mountain Cleft Retreat by Glacier National Park

Bedrooms 2
Space 1,200 sq ft
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

Cottage With 2 Bedrooms + 2 Full Baths, With Mountain Views

The 1200 foot Alpine Cottage can accommodate up to six persons and is reminiscent of a Swedish country house. (For larger groups, also check our other units located on the same property—Alpine House: Listing 134160, and Glacier Chalet: Listing 451634). The living room/dining room has a vaulted ceiling and skylights, and nearly floor to ceiling windows reveal a majestic view of a mountain meadow surrounded by forest and mountain peaks in the distance. The pine walls surrounding the living room and dining room are hand painted with mountains, flowers, and birds, making it look like an artist's cottage. Two couches (one a sofa bed) and an overstuffed chair in the living room make a cozy place to relax and visit. An arched doorway leads to a fully equipped kitchen with an arched window between the kitchen and dining room. French doors from the dining room open out to a large deck with grill and deck chairs, the perfect place to relax and take in the stunning view of mountains and wildlife.

Up the stairs from the living room, the cozy pine walled loft bedroom has twin beds, skylights, a sitting area, and a balcony window that opens out to the living room below with a view to the meadow and mountains.

The master bedroom includes a queen bed hung about with romantic white linen curtains and a small chandelier over the bed. A glass door leads into a private bathroom with a whirlpool bathtub. The hallway from the master bedroom leads to a second full bathroom, complete with stackable washer/dryer.

About Clyde Morgan

Melissa and I (Clyde) take pleasure in providing a wilderness retreat where people can unwind, enjoy nature, and come closer together. The Alpine Cottage is a quality place where this can happen.

Why Clyde Morgan chose Columbia Falls

Melissa lived in this area for about 20 years and loves the mountain wilderness. Her favorite spot is Lake McDonald, by Apgar Village, a short drive from the retreat.

What makes this cottage unique

The floor to ceiling windows of the Alpine Cottage face toward a meadow just on the other side of the lawn. Moose sometimes graze in the meadow. The large deck with BBQ is great for a gathering with family or friends.

cute, cozy & quiet

  • 4 of 5

We loved the cabin/chalet outside of West Glacier, Glacier National Park. It was so convenient to the park but without all the people noises. We relied on Google maps for directions and had a very hard time finding it in the dark. I would recommend arriving during daylight, otherwise it was wonderful.

Lovely cabin in a great location with a great view

  • 4 of 5

Hi Clyde and Melissa

My husband, 2 good friends, and myself rented your alpine cottage the past 5 days. We had a great drive up from Big Sky until we got 100 feet and 1 minute by the directions given to the alpine cottage. The directions told us to park the car on the road and carry our stuff in. We sat for 25 minutes not far from the Mountain Cleft Retreat driveway trying to figure out what to do. We finally used map quest and found our way down the driveway. We had a good laugh over this. We did not realize the alpine cottage was part of the Mountain Cleft Retreat which was my fault. Maybe the directions can be updated to tell you to turn at the Mountain Cleft Retreat.

We loved the seclusion in the woods and the view out the front window. We had hoped to see some wildlife but unfortunately we did not. It was nice that we could take a walk down the driveway and onto the main road and feel safe. There was a group in the home attached but there was no noise problem at all.

The cottage was supplied with all the necessary kitchen items needed for us to cook all of our meals. We learned the back way to Glacier Park and the grocery store and were greatly surprised the grocery store had great prices and fresh produce. Not only did we go to Glacier, but also to Whitefish Ski Area, the city of Whitefish, Columbia Falls, and Kalispel.

We enjoyed our stay very much and would highly recommend it. It had plenty of room for 2 couples. I think the addition of a DVD player would be a great idea.

Good location and well kept facilities close to Glacier Park

  • 4 of 5

My group of 14 shared the attached, larger house with a family group of 10 for a reunion. Some camped outside (plenty of room), kids slept on couches, etc. I was not aware the two houses were attached and, in fact, the larger house basement bedrooms are under the smaller house. This worked out fine for us but I would not have liked it as much if we were adjacent to strangers. Description of location is OK but be prepared to get lost the first time you arrive. No sign to house on main road, by the mailboxes. Be sure to get there in daylight, it is completely dark and rural at night (just the way you want it, unless you are trying to drive around and find it). We had to drive out and rescue lost relatives who arrived after dark.

Place was squeaky clean and well appointed. We had plenty of dishes and the kitchen was great but we ran out of garbage bags in both houses (only about 3 were provided) and had to go buy some. Plumbing worked well. Beds were great. Night is silent with only the forest sounds. No particular view but the area had been tastefully developed and not junked up. Plenty of parking space.

I would recommend this property to friends or relatives but only if they were prepared to take both houses at once. The thought of being next to a partying, younger crowd (or vice-versa) is horrible. Glacier Park is 8 miles or so, as well as local towns and stores, etc. These were easy drives even in peak season but the traffic in the park itself is heavy throughout the day. We got up early (in the park before 9am) to get parking spaces at the trailheads for our hikes. Had bad experiences with the park shuttles---too much waiting.

Unexpected surprises

  • 3 of 5

We had several problems/surprises with this stay. We expected the VBRO app to have directions to get to the house or at least an address, which was not found on the site. We had to call the owner for the information as we were trying to find the house ( and being very familiar with the area, we were very surprised by this). Despite booking our stay online, there was some confusion and the house was locked when we arrived. We had to call the owner again, and even though we had just spoken with him, we had to call more than 4 times over 30 minutes before we were able to reach him. Once we were able to get in, several things that were listed as provided were not. When we have stayed at other VBRO properties, things like soap or coffee filters were also provided, but that was not the case at this location, so anticipate that very little is provided here and your expectations will be met. As mentioned before, this cottage is attached to the larger house on the property. If that house is rented, expect to wake up when they do. Even using white noise, we were unable to avoid earlier mornings if the other house was up. We left a message for the housekeeper in regards to the thermostat seeming to be stuck resulting in an overly warm house and to our knowledge recieved no response. Lastly, due to bear activity, we were unable to put the trash in the identified area, and the 2ndary location was locked so we ended up leaving it in the house. Each of these things were minor in the whole scheme of things, but when added up, result in a less than wonderful stay. The house itself is cute, the location was precisely what we wanted, and overall met our needs of a bed to sleep on, a kitchen to cook in, running water and a roof over our heads.

Owner's Response: The fault is mine. Because we receive rental requests from a number of sources, I keep a master calendar. In this instance, I failed to copy your reservation from VRBO to the master calendar and thus the housekeeping staff was caught by surprise and the facility was not fully prepared as we always seek to have it. I apologize, and we will do our best to ensure that it is always well-prepared in the future, which is always our goal.

Beautiful Place

  • 4 of 5

kitchen was well equipped. Everything was very comfortable and beautifully appointed. Easy drive to Glacier. My only complaint was that a large group stayed in the adjoining house and noises from that group were easily heard. They stayed up quite late and made sleep difficult. The water had a very strong odor and was a rusty color. You did not smell clean after a shower.

Owner's Response: We have taken steps to enhance the sound deadening between the two units and will look into further steps. The water has been fine, but the water softening system did fail us part way through the summer and we are working with the company to return our water to its normal good quality. Thanks for staying at the retreat.

Family plus Grandma

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at the Alpine Cottage. The property was beautifully decorated, clean and maintained. Everything that we needed was in the kitchen. The setting was private and there was enough room for our 3 kids and Grandma to be comfortable. We enjoyed relaxing on the deck in the evenings. Also, an easy drive to West Glacier National Park where we spend the majority of our trip. Clyde and Melissa were easy to work with and provided us with great information to prepare us for our stay.
