About Doug Mendel

Magpie Cottage is a life-long dream come true for us. We love Beaufort as our second home and hope you will come to enjoy it as much as we and our family do.

Doug Mendel purchased this bungalow in 2003

Why Doug Mendel chose Pigeon Point

When we stepped into this cottage, its sunlight and cheerfulness captivated us immediately. The Great Room has eight full-length windows. Magpies love shiny things - and this bright house seemed to embody that spirit of light and curiosity. Along with that, it provides the perfect blend of old-time character and new convenience.

What makes this bungalow unique

We've vacationed for years on the coasts of the Southeast. When we finally made it to Beaufort we found everything we were looking for in all those travels - unspoiled natural beauty and a vibrant community that shares a unique culture, food and way of life. Magpie sits within the heart of it all.

Wonderful!

  • 5 of 5

My sister and I had a wonderful stay at Magpie. Jan and Doug Mendel were a delight to deal with and their rental property had everything we needed. We loved the home's layout and the porches, deck and patio were a wonderful bonus. The location to the waterfront park is indeed within walking distance. We enjoyed the recommended shops and restaurants in Beaufort and surrounding islands while we were there. We even took in a graduation on Parris Island and of course a visit to Charleston is always on the list.

I couldn't have been more pleased. Plenty of room for all of us! We were so grateful to be able to comfortably spend time together and visit. I would highly recommend this to anyone traveling to graduation.

A delightful, light and airy cottage!

  • 4 of 5

Cottages can often be cramped. Not Magpie! The main living/kitchen area has a vaulted ceiling. Home is well-furnished and was very clean. Owners were extremely responsive.

A perfect place of quietness and tranquility.

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here to go watch our son graduate at the Paris Island Marine Corps. We also drove in during the snow storm of January 3, 2018. What should have been a 5 hour trip took over ten due to snow, ice and trecherous driving conditions. Jan, the owner, called us several times during the travel to make sure we were ok and kept us up to date on conditions.

When we arrived we were greeted with a large warm house, clean, with plenty of space. I couldn't have been more pleased with my decision.

It's a place I wouldn't mind visiting just for a few days of vacation.

Thank you owners for your hospitality and genuine caring for total strangers. I would give more than 5 stars if I could.

In the heart of the Lowcountry, Beaufort is located on Port Royal Island, one of the inner Sea Islands of South Carolina.

Beaufort is renowned for its scenic location and its unspoiled historic character through the preservation of its unique antebellum architecture and the region’s vibrant and still evolving history.

Beaufort is home to some of the country’s best outdoor sports, beaches, antiques and shopping and is known for its military establishments, particularly its close proximity to Parris Island, the U.S. Naval Hospital, and the Marine Corps Air Station.

Beaufort’s downtown is full of restaurants, art galleries, antique shops and more – all tucked into its beautiful waterfront. More shopping and sight-seeing can be had at Hilton Head which is about 45 minutes south; Savannah, about an hour south, and Charleston, about an hour and a half north - all close enough for day trips.

For outdoor lovers, the ACE Basin area is a paradise; activities include beaches and golf, hunting, fishing, boating, bird watching, hiking, bicycling, and all types of nature study.
